And talking about paint jobs - most of you are too young to know - there was a time when most every woman had some man or boy in her family dressed in pink shirt, charcoal gray pants, or was it pink pants, gray shirt & pink tie - I think both ways! And cars came in that same paint scheme --- YES, it had to be a SCHEME......from where it started - I dont know. But thankfully, it ended!
I had a pink and gray 56 pontiac - until I painted it midnight blue.......Worst paint scheme I ever saw was a 1955 Ford 4 door painted pink and mint green - and they even 3-toned it !!!!
CANNOT see myself flying a pink plane with charcoal gray stripes, or a gray plane with......
Got to watch out for little old ladies in your hanger !!!!!

Dont know what Kitfox is using for spars now - on the KF5 it was still .065 wall - Thought only Avid had .083 ? Of course, you can buy your own .083 and start scratch-building wings - takes longer tho. Interesting about Magnum rod ends, when they still use a 1/4 inch attach bolt........There was a plane that flew with only about 6 feet of wingspan - forget name of it - flew fast too.

Bill, No experience, but I have the Avid Magnum manual, and think it may tell how much weight the LE adds - I THINK? 10 pounds?

    Mark,
When you get the template I sent to you (probably Saturday) note that it is the profile for the Kitfox 4 rib, and you can see that there isnt a nickels-worth of difference between that and the earlier KF stol ribs in the LE position. The big differencer is aft of the template on the undercamber. You can compare it to your ribs and make your own decision about adding it. IMO, I would add it.
For wing twist for speed - 1/2 inch is plenty IMO. Dont know what you can do about that without cutting all the ribs loose and rebuilding - probably not worth it. Short wing would be faster.,

Quoting your description: Guess I was on a "CAT" room - not a CHAT room - now what does a cat have that an airplane doesnt?

SIGHT TUBE KITS - MONEY WASTED
I thought the little red pellets to put in your sight tubes were rather spendy at $6 each, plus $7 each postage from Bear Perkins Powered Parachute site, so instead I ordered 2 of the sight tube kits at $17 each plus $7 postage. Well, I didnt ask enough questions and wasted some money.
Unless you have slip-in fittings on your tanks, then all you get with the kit that is useable, is a clear plastic tube and a little red pellet to show where the top of your gas is in the tank. Rather spendy for total of $41.
I cant blame Bear, since it was my ignorance - just dont want others to make the same mistake.

Don't really think we need one - There is enough chit-chat on our posts to fill up an airport....and we have messaging for privacy.
Last time I went on a chat room was when I was single and on Match.com - All they wanted to talk about was sex - not one word about airplanes.....(Oh-Oh, think we may have just lost some chaterites to Match.com)!!!! Going to get lonely on here....

Saw your cute little bird in SA - Looks great to me, but wife says you need a new paint scheme - Told her you were too busy protecting little old ladies in the big gray bird...she said, "you mean, in that big ugly plane. It needs painting too!"......
but what do non-flyers know about beauty......
    How old is that photo?
    Congrats,

Thanks for the Perkins site - I ordered 2 of the sight tube kits - Now, what is best sealer for fittings to fiberglas tanks?
I use Loctite 545 Hydraulic sealer on all metal fittings. It is OK with ethenol too. Talked to Loctite specialist (salesman?) and he seemed in the dark about fiberglas - said maybe 545 with a primer, or Loctite liquid Teflon paste????

What do you need to know about the plastic LE kit? I had them on mine, per Kitfox instructions, Made templates of plywood with copy of Kitfox drawing glued to them, then used that to line up lE, tape it in place, then glue with 9460. Removed them when I decided to extend LE per Harry Riblett instructions for CG with Soob engine that Doug posted. I have extra templates, and will mail you one if you need it. I also have salvaged plastic LE if anyone wants to buy it.

I might be able to post a photo of how I widened my Kitfox 6 inches at the elbows - dont think it makes that much difference at the shoulders tho...These planes were made for skinny people, I guess......My friend made a single out of his because of his size....

Glad to have more Soob company on here with Suberavid and myself - Soob owners can get lonely in the middle of the Rotax pack.......
Well, no matter what the snowmachine engine sounds like, we all have lots of common ground and help each other a lot.

I've got a cheap Kitfox clone fuselage you could hang them on. Just bring a trailer and money down and pick it up.

    OVERVOLTAGE / OVERAMP PROTECTION
Earlier, I had discussed with Suberavid Randy about adding a circuit breaker in the hot OUTPUT side of the alternator. This is because the alternator, unlike the generator, is self-energising, and it does no good to switch off the power supply to a runaway alternator.
This is noted on all of the schematics I have for homebuilt planes.
Since then, I have regressed back into my electronic days, remembering that the Cessnas and others had "over-VOLTAGE" protectors installed. And, Spruce has several in their catalog.
Earlier thinking, was that this was for the generator systems used back then. Now I believe this is necessary IN ALL SYSTEMS to protect the avionics/radios (yes, most of us use handhelds, BUT some are plugged into the aircraft circuit for power) from being fried from the OVERVOLTAGE, just as the circuitbreaker protects the battery from being fried from over-AMPERAGE....I guess?
I am posting this for someone with more electrical knowledge (or access to it) than me to follow up on the "WHYS AND HOWS" of the system. I have some schematics coming from AEROELECTRICS on the overvoltage protection which may help.
Bear in mind, this is being written by the one student in AMT electronics class who managed to really FRY an alternator while he had it on the test stand. Sorry, Mr. Louis G., instructor at UAA Aviation electronics class......

Good question on filter, finger strainer - will let more knowledgeable builders answer that. I prefer finger strainer, which might prevent stoppage and maybe the addition of a clear filter too. You could have stoppage without the finger strainer.
On the sight tube - at one time there were small red beads available that would float on top of the gas - these were used in some factory sight tubes - dont know where to get them now, or what size - but caution here, as lots of plastic beads will melt in gas and probably ethenol would be worse.

  19. EDMO added a post in a topic 9 LED TAILLIGHT BULB IS A SUCCESS

I believe the lenses are probably the same size - I really dont mind being aced-out on bargains - hope you are right.
It was the taillight housing - not the lens - that kept the 12 LED buls from seating - almost, but just couldnt lock it in.

Seems that no "aircraft" sealer seems to work on glas tanks - However, there is an epoxy sealer for motorcycle tanks that I believe will work even with ethenol - Now, my 71-year-old brain has failed me again.....Forgot to take my memory pills this morning....
I have it printed out and filed - can get it and post for anyone interesterd - believe it costs about $40 a tank.

9 LED TAILLIGHT BULB IS A SUCCESS
If you have followed my posts about trying to find a cheap LED bulb for Position lights, and finding that the 12 LED bulb would not fit into my Grimes taillight, then I can give you news of success with the 9 LED bulb - IT FITS!
The bulbs I have bought from O-SIXTY COMPANY in California have plated bases which are not prone to corrosion like the old brass bases on aircraft bulbs, and should last probably 100 times longer.
These bulbs sell for about $9 A PAIR with free shipping - Considerably cheaper than aircraft bulbs.
Don't know how much light they put out, but should be plenty - I have a small 9-LED flashlight that used 2 AA batteries, and is very bright.
Back when I was into photography I had a light meter - doubt if your IA has one.........
Still need to see if the 12 and 19 LED bulbs will fit the wing lights.
BTW - you can get the 1056/1156 bulbs with as many as 63 LEDs....

It is listed in Kitfox instructions to cut a clearence notch where the fuel outlet meets the rib - However, I think an elbow might be a better choice for both locations. Maybe you will get some better suggestions.

Long Story - got hooked with a wrecked KF1 about 16 years ago when graduating from AMT college - now rebuildfing/modifying Kitfox 4/5/99 clone to a trigear with flaps & ailerons and extended leading edge with EA-81 Subaru.......Left out a lot.......
Bottom Line: Really wish I had gotten a Rans S6 years ago.
