One of my boys and my C build.
Hi all. Hoping this is not too far off the beaten path to gain some info and suggestions along the way. My middle son and I picked up this wrecked C model fuselage and damaged wings. Nothing else to work/rework. I'll post a few more pictures later with other descriptions but here's a start. When done, I don't believe we can call it an Avid as we did not get the serial number. I guess we'll be needing to come up with a name somewhere.

This was a C model with 532 before it found that tree. (Not by any of us.)

After pulling the covering, we started cutting what was bent and needing to be replaced. Lots of work. From the get go, we decided to do a 16" extension as the lower longerons needed replacement anyway.

Attached is a couple pix. Again, this was a C model and much of what was done was done to match what was original materials.

So, for future reference, we are likely going to be putting a Corvair in. I know this is a heavy engine but also well convinced, the the engine installed and flying will be considerably lighter than a Sube instal. As I get more pictures up, perhaps someone will chime in with suggestions to beef up for these heavier loads.

Here's a couple more build/rebuild pix. Not to mention all the bent tubing we started with, after cutting away all that which was bent, some squaring and alignment needed attention. Spar carry throughs were no longer in line or parallel to each other. Once the bent stuff was gone, it came back part way but still a lot of blocking, pushing, pulling etc was needed to part the good stuff back where it should have been.

Piece by piece, that's a lot of one at a time parts to cut and cope to fit.

If any comments or suggestions come to mind, we'd surely appreciate such. Thanks.

    More pix to come.

This post is/was meant as a teaser or at least to let everyone know where we started. I have more pics and will filter in more with some verbage as time permits. It started out as the owner of this plane had purchased another fuse and wing kits to replace that which was damaged. We came close to buying the whole plane plus this damaged stuff. In the end, we would have been flying the one plane then building a second plane from these parts. The owner changed his mind so guess what comes first. It will be an awesome day when this plane takes first flight. Hoping for this spring or early summer but guess what,,,,, LONG way to go.

Were you here? I live about 30 minutes away from OSH and did attend that whole day including the night airshow. The fireworks after the air show were also something else.

    Doug,

Sorry, didn't notice you posted Steve's other post. Thanks for the info.

    P.S. I dropped you a PM.

Thanks for the info Steve, This was definitely a C model. Side stringers metal, belly stringer wood. Tail was offset, it's now straight along with a 16" fuse extension.

Looking at the picture at the bottom of your post, I see the additional 4 motor mount attach points. Is that a MKIV? Have more front end pix? How many of those 10(?) attach points did they actually use for the Sube?

All we started with was bent fuse and wings. Rudder(New) is now rounded. Wings are going to be rebuilt to HH specs and larger dia wing struts. (7/8" I believe VS 3/4 originals.)

It's likely we'll be installing a Corvair. Very close to a Continental but surely less than a Sube.

    Thanks again, (everybody)

    Model & airframe differences
Question I asked in another forum. Received no specifics there, just reasons/discussions to use 582s, Jabs or 912s. Thinking about a direct drive auto conversion at this time but don't want redrive either. Maybe Corvair? Helped build one for a friends KR2s and I'm impressed with it.

Perhaps someone here can aim me in the right direction. We're still in the
process of rebuilding what was an Avid before,,, (not by us)

Fuselage has been stretched, wider landing gear made, rudder, elevator and
horizontal pretty well done, still lots to go.

We're still contemplating on a 4 cycle engine. Budget prohibits Rotax or Jab.
Either would be nice, but way out of our price range.

So, I've been reading here and there, but I can not narrow down the differences
in B, C & Mk4 fuselages. I know of some minor changes, such as side and bottom
stringers and a number of other changes, but what I'm wondering about is changes
in the engine mounting and or front end structural changes. I've seen it stated
that from B model on, all the front structures of the fuselage came out of the
same fixture. I don't know how accurate that info is, but read it somewhere.

I've also read there was possible some lower front fuselage reinforcements down
for heavier engines and perhaps Avid supplied 4(?) additional motor mount attach
points which one needed to add to his B or C models for mounting the Soob
    engines.

I'm not interested in installing a Soob, but interested on any factory mods to
factory fuselages and/or builder mods done/required for heavier engines.

We have a long way to go, including rebuilding 2 wings to HH spec, but still
want to keep an eye ahead on the engine install/requirements.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dale

    Hi. I'm new here.

Humm, 442CK haven't thought about that plane for a while. 442CK was based in Wis Rapids, about 50 miles from me. I helped a guy load it when it was purchased from CK. I don't know a whole lot of the plane but might be able to answer or find something on the plane. CK sold the plane due to health issues. Anything specific I might be able to help with?
