Wished I had time to get back to posting other accomplishments on this plane but just time for the present.

The one wing tanks had a couple small issues due to the excursion into that tree. Anyway, we removed the top sheet, verified all is well inside other than some rattling Plexus adhesive used to adhere the top sheet. (Was also some crazing in the top sheet.

We have the materials needed to replace the top sheet. Local fiberglass place looked all over and made recommendations. This shop makes a fiberglass aircraft being sold all over the world, so I guess they know what they are talking about.

We bought a new top sheet from them, which they use in their wing tanks. Too bad, it's enough to redo both tanks, which we might do for a couple reasons. Thus, I ave a couple questions.

We'll be salvaging the cap fitting(s) for for reuse in the repaired tank. These filler caps are both close to the root end of the tank. With some dihedral in the wing, would there be any reason for not moving that filler some distance outward to allow a bit more fuel? I know one would not want to take all air from the tanks and really "top it off", but what about half way out or just leave where they are?

We talked about taking some washout out of the wings on rebuild. Kind of hard with the 2" WO built into these tanks. The tank we have open, we can put it where ever we want. If we redo the other tank, we could put the washout where ever we want. Would it be worth doing the other tanks and going to 1" in the wash out?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The folks at RS Hughes were great to deal with. This epoxy made it here rapidly. Too bad it's 100 miles away or I could have saved 419 shipping. Thanks for the tip.

When I first looked at Sky Geek, I thought it said it would ship in 2-3 days. I had the oder ready but thewn went back to he item page and it was showing such that it would ship Nov 19. I emails them but have not heard back yet. Mean while, I emailed RS Hughes, they said they had in stock and it would arrive by Friday this week. I did the order so we'll see. I do expect this order will be OK.

I'm seeing about $106 from both Skygeek and Hughes.

Thanks all for the replies. Thinking I may just up and order from Skygeek as I've already started the order process but also want to take closer look at all Hughes has to offer.

We're about as far as we can go on the fuselage until we have the wings done. Main issue left on the fuse is the wing strut attach points. Once the wings are done, they will be used to make sure the geometry of the lower strut attach points are correct, such that the wings fold back and are even. If not for folding, I know we would have less to deal with but when folded, we do not want the wing tips off even 1/8".

I case anyone recalls our project, we were looking into Corvaire power but now leaning towards VW to shed some weight. Still holding to the notion, I want 4 cycles, no redrive, so,,,, Feel free to hammer me on the VW. Plenty around here have already.

I'm so far behind on updating the web on progress, but in short, the fuse is all welded up including 16" stretch, wider landing gear has been made and attached, control stick/assy and mixer are installed. Mixer relocated under LH seat. Rudder and elevator built and mounted. Horizontal stab built and attached such that we now have a trimmable horiz stab.

    Thanks,

    Time to build some wings!

I'm shopping for a bit of a deal on the Hysol 9460 structural adhesive.

Has any one ever used the following online vendor?
    http://www.skygeek.com/henkel-hysol-9460-5-lb-kit-83131.html
    http://www.skygeek.com/aboutus.html

Know of any other sources for this product?

    Thanks,

Sorry I didn't get the chance to look up any of you at EAA this year. I was there 5 days but only got to "walk around" Sunday morning for a while. The following took up most of my time.

I am well aware of the 5th bearing. I installed one on a friends Corvair powered KR2S.

Anyone know the installed (flying) weight of a standard Sube install? I've read anywhere from 190-240#.

This Corvair install would have 5th bearing and no redrive. From the get go, I've maintained no 2 cycles, no redrives, at least 4 cylinders preferred in this project. There are numerous other engines that would be very nice (U/L Power, Jabiru to name a few) but their cost likely will not fit this project.

In the beginning of this project, I talked in some length to Brett at Airdale and was then thinking on a Continental up front. Brett thought that was a great idea. He recommended at least 80hp to accuunt for extra weight. . (I had thought 65hp to match the 532/582.) If such Continental would come about at good price, we might lean that way, otherwise, this Corvair runs a smooth as anything you could imagine. I believe the flying weight of the Corvair to be nearly the same as a Cont and only a couple pounds one way or the other.

Sorry Doug and folks. Been just a bit busy to post updates. . Been slow progress on the project this year. Some heat reasons, some funds reasons and some other reasons, one being flying the Clipper, so all's not bad. I'll get back in here soon and post some updates.

I'm off all next week but it's time for Oshkosh. Probably most everyday if possible. Maybe see some of you there.

I've also got myself involved with the following exciting program. We'll be in (I believe) the home builders building working on another plane project. See link. Aviators By Design

    Av8r3400,"Short wing Piper "deathtrap"?

Not talking about that Clipper based up there, are we? Anyway, I spent most of this day up in one of these deathtraps and was wondering, what's that all about. Because they sink like a rock? Won't win any short field take off contests, but I sure enjoy flying this 1949 flying machine. Until the Avid is done, this is about my old opportunity of aviating. (Not that I'm bias on these short wings but it's just a fun plane to fly.

Jumping out of sequence on order of pictures I want to post in this topic, but here goes.

The (used) Kitfox controls stick bolted directly to the existing Avid controls stick mounting brackets. If we were not relocating the ,mixer to under the seat, I'm sure this KF mixer would have bolted directly in the Avid mixer mounts as well.

Thanks Doug. With ssooo much left to build for this project, I can just about imagine how many hours we've saved with these KF parts.

    Hi Randy,

Thanks for the info and pix of a very nice looking Avid.

    Couple quick questions.

Do you know if Airdales wide gear is taller than stock Avid gear? If so, how much.

Maybe better yet, how much taller is your gear over stock?

I sure like the way your place looks sitting on that taller gear. Has me thinking,,,,

    Thanks again,

Surely can not fool AK!. It's wood and fiberglass. Full scale lawn ornament. You'd be surprised how many walk up to it, thinking it's real and asking how he got it there. You might imagine all the aircraft, passing over here, then all of a sudden doing circling maneuvers.

I'll have to see if I can get a more recent picture from him.

    (Thanks for the fix.)

    Pic of my brothers plane
I took this pic of my brothers plane as viewed from my Koala, year before last, just before Airventure 2010. This spring, before putting it out for display, he repainted it, more gray) and added more graphics. In the pic my old camera took it looked much more blue than it really was. Don't know why if looked blue in his picture. It's a full scale F-16 which he built in his shop in his spare time.

Yesterday, we took off wings, elevators and vertical fin and put it away for the winter.

    Had to try this.

I had this Koala from 1999 after I sold my 150 and just sold it this summer after getting my FAA medical back. Now I fly my friends 49 Clipper. Should be taking that out tomorrow for awhile.

Would literally have to start over. Randy have sketches/drawings on his gear? How much taller is the tall gear and how much taller are Randy's?

I'm sssooooo glad I've found this site. So much good and pertinent info coming. I know we will be considering/using a lot from here which we may not have thought of on our own.

Have you made provisions for either manual or electric elevator trim?

Have not made provisions, but strongly considering a trimmable horizontal stabilizer, such as the Clipper (Pipers) have. What's going to make this a little tricky is getting the horiz stab struts braces to move with the horiz stab. I do have an idea on how to easily (ya, right) do it and not add much weight, although the tail would be the place to add a little USEFUL weight.

Ya, place for possible future owners antenna. (I get it.) Good idea.

Little unclear on that additional bracing sketch. Does look like some new bracing comes down to the longerons, where ones wheels would end up, if their gear was torn off after the hard landing after hitting a tree. Not sure where those braces end up on the top end.

    Thanks for the info "friends".

Wide landing gear coming along. Possibly could have been a little taller but as is would be stock but one size larger tubing and about 13" wider with the pair. Rudder taking shape. Tail wheel in place. LOL. 4 new HH spar tubes on wall, waiting for wing rebuild.

We bought the damaged fuse and wings last Nov, so what I'm working on posting is about a years worth work. It's sometimes hard to find time for both of us to get together to work on this. Been real slow the last few months.

    More pix to come.

Interesting. I point at these pictures and it tells me how may downloads have been done for each picture. Hope our experience is able to help others in some way. Can hardly wait till it's flying.

One thought. We've made it no secret that this plane is going to have a heavy engine. (I still think the Corvair will come in less weight than the Subes could.) Somewhere I was reading about someone having some forward sweep on the wings. I'm wondering about adding maybe an inch or so forward sweep and if it would help the CG? Wouldn't want to go so much that the plane looks hideous when done but perhaps an inch or so might not even be noticeable? Any thoughts.

    Few more pix.

Most of the cabin area structure rebuilt. Notice extra truss behind seat and additional vertical structure up back of door opening frame work. Why? Must have seen it somewhere.

Both front and read spare carry through tubes were removed and replace.

Tail reattached and new side stringers installed. Vertical fin was straightened during the tail work.

Thank you, someone, for fixing the typo in my subject line. That has been annoying me and I found I could not edit that.

Less washout on the wings? What do you think, half? (1"?)

I also have had a number of aviation friends (builders/re-builders) tell me that the stretch will improve ground/landing. We're also widening the landing gear about 14".
