Maybe unique would be a better choice of words than 'bad'.

[No offense intended to the early KF owners/planes out there.]

    Intended mission of the plane:

Flying fun (therapy?), mostly solo, off of my ~800' strip on my property.  Grass and/or snow.  My Avid/Kitfox mentor is a big-time float-flyer, but I haven't yet crossed over to that side of things, but who knows, someday...

From my research, I think I'm looking for and Avid C or later (for size and 912-ability) or a Kitfox IV or later (also for size and more importantly to avoid the Denny "designs" and their poor handling characteristics).

I'm not opposed to a 2-stroke, but I would prefer a 4-stroke and I know I need the cabin space of the "larger" planes.

    Opinions...
    I'm kind of torn.

I really like the idea of a very light plane like Bandit has.  There are many benefits to this, not the least of which is cost.

    However...

I also like the idea of a 912 and maybe a little "bigger" airplane for a better ride and a few 'creature comforts' like more sound deadening and insulation, a radio, GPS, electric trim, etc., etc. for more cross country capability.

Would anyone like to discuss the merits of either school of thought?  I'm getting closer and closer to making a decision on which way I want to go and I'd like to get some other people's thoughts to see if my thinking may be flawed.

    Thanks.

    Mattress Rant
    Okay--

Who out there is happy with the mattress you sleep on??  I certainly am not!

My wife and I are not "petite" people (I'm about 240# and she isn't far behind...), but to have a mattress develop "hog troughs" within two years is ridiculous!  We now have our king size bed sideways due to the troughs in it in the normal orientation.  I still have an old mattress from when I was in high school that we use (one at a time - it is a small bed) as an alternate bed because it is still comfortable at over 20 years old!!  The reason being (in part) is it can be turned over!!!!  The new mattresses cannot be flipped!  What a crock!  We have gone through 4-5 mattresses in the last 7-10 years because they become so damned uncomfortable that you just cannot sleep on them.

Now the wife is pushing for one of those sleep-number air mattresses.  I'm not a fan of these things just by what I've read on the net of owners who absolutely hate them for what you get for the excessive amount of money they want for them!  (Yes, I'm cheap!)

Thanks for listening.  I'll be quiet now.

Back Again at $15K starting bid...  Kinda like driving past a train wreck.

Closer, but still double what it's worth.  I'm tempted to email the guy something pithy, but I won't.

The begging for money does get old, i'd agree, but...

They offer much with insurance services and purchase service programs for researching, title insurance and fund transfers.

    Great Pictures, C5Engineer!!

The assembly view finally lets me follow the links and understand how the mixer works!

In that view, it looks like the flap actuating "bell-crank" has the paint rubbed off its triangulating brace.  Is that from a side load (bushing slop) or does it just fit in there that snug?

I still chuckle at the one on ebay (again) with starting bid of $15k, incomplete and no motor.  Why buy a partially complete kit for twice what it's worth, when...

There's a "not-too-bad-one" on barnstormers for $23k, with a 80hp 912, complete and flying.  (I've emailed the guy and have pictures of it, but I'm still 3-6 months ahead of buying, yet.)

The wiring hanging down is more troublesome than the instrument arrangement, to me at least.  It would be a prime candidate for a re-wire.

But, I'm more interested in a rough field plane than an amphibian...

    Flaperon Mixer
There is a thread going over at 'Rotax about the mixer devise and it's modifications on an Avid.

Wanting to learn as much as I can about these little bird before hopefully buying one later this year, I'd like to learn more about how these mixers work.

Can someone help me with a YouTube video or maybe some drawings of how the aileron and flap functions are mixed and how much throw each has?  Being an engineer I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but for the life of me I can't follow the pictures posted in that thread.

I imagine that Rotax might be hurting a little:  Downturn in the economy, historically ridiculous prices for their 900 series engines...

Maybe hoping for a little business with a glitzy, give nothing ad campaign.

Growing pains, Lenni.  You'll get it right.  Ever look at the VB based software?  (Like Team Kitfox) That seems to be very popular, too.

    Thank you.  That makes sense.

Was the Bandit only on the Mark IV or was the Bandit an option (lack of options?) on earlier models?

Very nice looking bird, Bandit.  I really like the wheel-through Avid skis over the "straight" KF skis.

Where does the Bandit fit in the Avid lineage?

Saving money to buy a flying plane...

I need to get flying again, first.  Then I'll look for a project to make "mine".  Yeah, I am probably the dumbest "F" on the planet.

The crimper used on these type of ends is a special crimper with 6-8 "teeth" that squeeze all around the fitting at once.
