    Thanks Leni.

We bought the house "package" from Golden Eagle Log Homes.  It is a modification of one of their "stock" plans (that they don't make any more - The Mountain View).  You know, a little more here, a little less there, kind of thing.  We like it.  The property and the house were a stretch for us, but they aren't making any more land, now and we couldn't pass up the opportunity.

    Tailwheel Endorsement
Well, I spent the day Saturday in an old Citabria working on my tailwheel endorsement.  What a blast.

I've got a couple more hours of dual to do yet, but my instructor is pleased with how I'm doing and says we should be able to wrap up on this Sunday (weather permitting).

Also did the BFR at the same time.  Two more steps done on my list....

    More details to come, soon.

I even spoke (Emailed) with the guy.  Nice plane, but not at that price....  A couple of weeks ago it was down to like $15k.  That is more in line with this plane.

    VGs
I put this up over at Rotax, but that site seem pretty dead now...

Has anyone ever put VGs on their flapperons?  This would be in an attempt to minimize the inversion issue when the flap function is extended.

If I understand correctly, the inversion situation happens when the further deflected flapperon stalls, loosing it's lift and allowing the opposite flapperon to roll the aircraft in the "wrong" direction.

Just a thought from the nooby.

The plane I'm looking at is in upstate New York.

    Anyone in that neighborhood??

Thanks, Lenni.  That's what I'm looking for.

    It's a 912UL - 80hp.  Definitely not a show winner, but I think well taken care of.

I'm still waiting on the SN of the motor to check the AD's and Service Bulletins.

    Looking at a Model IV
I'm going to go look at a model IV Kitfox over the Memorial day weekend.

I'm putting together a "Checklist" of things that I want to look at on the airframe.  This board has some pretty knowledgeable folks, so how about it?  What would you look at to determine if the plane is worth buying?  Maybe a better question would be:  What constitutes a deal breaker on a model IV?

    Thanks.

I really like chocolate ice cream.

(What?!  No one else is writing anything here lately.  I don't have a plane, yet.  This is all I can talk about that may be interesting...)

    Props and Blades
Does anyone over here have the courage to talk about propellers?  Apparently they don't over at Rotax.

I'd like to know more about 4+ bladed props.  Are they only for extreme low speed ('Chutes and Trikes)?

I wanna learn something, cause I's be ignorant.

I saw.  I was disappointed by the remarks.  The individual that made them is a knowledgeable (and I'm sure a good) guy.

I hope the remarks, as written, were taken out of their intended meaning.  I hope it was not meant as a disparaging remark to poster #2's wife, but as a warning to poster #2 that "other people" may think the association between the 'racy' stuff and poster #2's wife were/are on purpose.

    That is what I hope.

    [Engineer Hat = ON]

When ever you have a sharp edge or corner in a heat treated or hardened piece of material - like a spring leaf - it is very important to radius all edges to prevent stress risers from becoming cracks.  Filing a radius on the cut that you made on the spring is good, but then polishing that filed radius very smooth to the touch with emery cloth similar will be better still.  I've seen file marks cause cracks at times.

This is also important on any drilled (or punched) holes in these leaves (yes you can drill through a hardened spring leaf) are chamfered and polished, too.

A coat of paint to protect from corrosion is a good bet, too.

Feel free to smack me down if this is too outside the box, but:

Why is there so much trouble breaking these tailwheel springs??  Leni-- you admit to only 51# of dead weight, so maybe a max 250# of landing impact weight?

Sounds to me like this is an extremely poor engineered spring.  I would say replacing this with something a little better quality (like a POS, chinese trailer spring segment) would gain much more durability!  (These are experimental planes, right?)  Even if it is heavier, rear CG does not seem to be an issue!!

Sorry, I have to call  on this problem!

  18. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Hello?

I'd bet the 5 gallon bucket of Delo would weigh almost as much as your 582.

Just the starter on a 8V-71 will probably weigh more than the whole FWF on your Avid!

I prefer to run a fine aged [domestic] snake oil in all my 2-strokes.

Of course all my 2-strokes are Detroits. What would you think of a nice 8V-71 in an Avid?

How cool would this sound on the flight line at Oshkosh:

Dave Fisher has them on his website. Here is the direct link to the rigging information. It's for a Kitfox, but it's probably close enough.

Very nice, 84KF.  Is that a IV or V?  What is you empty weight on that bird?

Bandit, do you have any photos of your motor install as a comparison?

Maybe correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that:

The KF IV was a ground up redesign, once Denney-Aerocraft was large enough to employ a couple of real aeronautical engineers who designed out some of the quirkiness of the earlier models. This is when the break from the Avid-clone design happened.

Dean Wilson (Avid) is a designer, Dan Denney (Kitfox) is an innovative salesman. (I'm told.) That is not to take anything away from the accomplishments of either man.

    ------

I too, am a little svelte in the mid-section (IE - I'm a fatass) at 240-ish pounds.  That's why I would like to get into the larger cabin right away so that I don't get discouraged by the "cozy" design that won't allow me to share the fun...
