The axles are both 3/4", so they *should* go right onto your existing gear legs. (I would use the new axles.) My opinion, I'd copy the 4-bolt flange that are on the 'Fox legs and have these copies welded onto your Avid gear legs. This flange is where you bolt the caliper brackets to.

Bolt it together and then start stoppin' on a dime....

(What tires did it come with? 8" wheels, right?)

I've been thinking of doing a full recover of the "Rat Fox". Stewart System sounds very interesting... I think I'll get the DVDs!

    Thanks for the heads up.

About yea by such give or take a little...

Actually these are prototypes. The "production" version will be a little wider (maybe fit around Kingfox tires) and incorporate a one-size-fits-all style height & camber user adjustable feature.

    Skis
Here's a couple of pix of my plane with the new Airdale wheel through skis installed! We (Brett and I) have been working on an install for the Kitfox of these skis. Now to perfect our tail ski design...

First photo is from Dave's Farm. (No, not either of the Dave's farms from YouTube...)

Second photo is on the lake next to the Airdale facility (Brett's house.)

Cool, Jezz. How did you find yourself in an Antonov 124? I think that story needs a little more filling out...

If you use the simple program "Paint" in your computer, this will allow easy resizing...

25x8x12 would go onto a 12" rim. Really have to do some fab work for a 12" atv rim...

    Joey,

How does the width of the Matco tailwheel arms compare to your rudder horn?

I dug for about a half an hour for that 25" tire and never found it. What size wheel does that one take?

Though mine have tread on them, the size of 20x7x8 seems to be really good for my application of grass runways and river sandbars.

Here's the pic of my brake I promised...

Yes he has the complete rudder peddle assemblies (W/ mounts for Matco brake parts) for your Avid.

We were talking today a bit about the wheel situation. I gave him your cell # and he will probably contact you in regard to this, soon. For the record, Kitfox doesn't even support the 8" ATV style wheels any more. Deb McBean (I emailed her for price, etc.) told me to use the 8" Matco wheel. (Yikes $$$!)

I may look into what it would take to produce these old Kitfox style wheels again as an option... Stand by.

Short answer, yes. Steve was instructing in a Quicksilver MXLII, 2-seat ultralight.

Now he is instructing in his Champ, which btw was the "Outstanding Champ" winner of Airventure 2009. I got to fly it on skis this afternoon!

HOWEVER-- They do not have anything on floats. That may be the tricky bit... Send me your floats, I'll get the 1200 on them and ready for you.

Probably can do much for them from way down here but send our best wishes and prayers for their safe return.

You need to take a trip out here.

We have a father/son CFI team of seaplane qualified instructors that can make this happen. Steve (the dad) is a LS-Seaplane Instructor and Brian (the son) is a "regular" CFI with every possible add on rating you can get. I'm sure that Paul S. (you know who I mean) could be able to whistle up a plane to use.

    Joey-- ( I got your text. Sorry I didn't reply, yet. )

The Kitfoxes use a 8" aluminum ATV wheel with tabs welded on the back that mount the brake disc. The caliper reaches from the ID to the OD (backwards from most applications). I'm headed over to the airport today and will send you a pic of the setup. I have my gear all reassembled with the new prototype "ski axles" installed.

Brett still supplies the 6" setup for Avids, but we were talking about looking for a more reasonably priced option of going with an 8" wheel. At the time we still had one of my Kitfox wheels on the bench for ski fitting. So we were using that as a idea starter...

One more note about LS seaplane flying - I spoke with my LS CFI today and he added that there needs to be a second CFI to basically act as an examiner. Not an FAA person, just a second CFI to sign off that the training was satisfactory This will allow legal LS seaplane operations.

According to my local LSA CFI, a float "rating" is only a sign off from a qualified instructor (he is qualified, but I don't know what qualifies him) when operating as a Sport Pilot.

So-- That being said, I take it (and he agrees) that as a PP with only a SEL (& SEL-I), if I am operating my LS eligible aircraft within the limitations of a Sport Pilot rating, all I would need to fly it with floats is a sign off from him.

To fly it as a PP I would need to get the seaplane rating, with all of it's associated red tape.

My take is that if you are only operating off land, you would just have really inefficient landing gear. No sign-offs or anything required.

@Doug - I've considered updating the lights in my wingtips for LEDs eventually. Funds are tight now, being newly self employed... The lights I have now draw quite a bit. There is a low and high beam so with everything lit they are very bright but quickly overpower the wimpy 912 alternator and my small battery. Doing the wig-wag at that time, too, is mandatory, IMO.

@Leni - You must have super neck muscles to have all this shi--stuff on you head when you go sledding. Camera, light, pointy spike like the red baron...

Hmmmm. I wonder what the load on the spar is at the very tip like that... ? Warm fuzzy meter reading of 3.72.

My landing lights (on the yellow plane) are in the wingtips. Zero structural impact.

Probably the benchmark for good brakes on a small plane...

Was there a reason you didn't go with the Grove brakes?

Brett has everything you need for the conversion. I think he has at least a couple sets of brakes/wheels on the shelf and I know he has the rudder peddles, I was looking at them today.

I will be there tomorrow and I'll get the details for you.

    Call you tomorrow evening?

Suber-- Did you need to change master cylinders? I've got the single puck matcos on my 1050 and they suck at best.

Taildrgfun (I think) - the guy with the dead stick takeoff on YouTube - has dual calipers on his Highlander. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Looking good, Joey. You'll soon be an off-airport addict.

Be sure to give a PIRep on that new tailwheel, ASAP!
