  1. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic AVID Fly=In 2011

Looks like you know how to have a good time with the flying buddies!

I belong to a very active EAA chapter, UL 75. In the summer (when we have daylight) we have fly-nights every other Tuesday evening, where we have mini-fly-ins at different member's homes with private strips.

Our monthly meetings are all fly-ins at different places every month. In the winter they turn into ski-ins with all the ski planes.

Airplane people certainly are the best...

Can I fly down in my (as Brett McKinney calls) brand "K" machine? It's lineage goes back to Avid...

I'm also trying to get more people to come to the Ultralight area at Airventure. I'd like to start a "Flapperon Society" of planes and enthusiasts at Airventure. Avids and Kitfoxes will be the corner stones, but we would allow Ridge Runners, Sky Raiders and maybe even the Just airplanes (maybe...). All of the Avid type clones would be welcome.

  3. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Tailwheel Tension Springs

I tightened up my chains recently. My rudder stops are ground back too far, making the tailwheel come loose too quickly. Now with the chains tighter, this isn't so pronounced.

I also at the same time switched to compression from tension springs. That was a great change and I highly recommend it. I lost springs from the chains a couple of times. Talk about wake-up! Try steering with no connection to the tailwheel - Full time swivel! Wow somebody shit my pants!!!

The "Wingtanks" are made of roto-molded polyethylene, the same material and manufacture as most "plastic" gas cans.

Ethanol proof, as opposed to the fiberglass which is at best, ethanol resistant.

Great job Trackwelder. You'll have a ticket of your own very shortly!

What's the matter at Rousch? Hasn't one-eye bought another plane to crash, yet?

Continuing the lighter note: I don't imagine Dean talked about being inducted into the EAA hall of fame last week, did he? My friends Brett McKinney and Paul Seehafer were in attendance at the ceremony at the EAA Museum for his induction.

Why not get the Speedwing tip extensions?

Brett at Airdale sells many of these to improve the slow speed handling of the short wing, speedwing planes.

  9. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Tail Wheel

I have the opposite problem which might be of interest to you.

My tailwheel releases too easily due to the rudder stops being ground back too far. If the wheel releases at 40 degrees and the rudder is at 35 degrees, meaning that you need to add brake to get the wheel to release. Without this need for brake, the wheel will release with only rudder travel making the plane swivel too easily causing loss of control and then, getting it to re-engage is very difficult.

I have shims set up on the rudder stops to keep this from happening on mine...

    Great video, Leni.

Nice cabin with a landing strip.

The strip where you made your "clearing turn"-- Is that a man made strip for something or is that some type of natural feature used as a landing field??

I had a fun outting this past Friday. Went to 68C for one of their weekly Friday Lunch feeds. Such a cool little airport.

Trying to show the text method, but it won't allow mr to type it as an example.

Click on the "three overlapping picture" icon on the top right of the posting window. This will give you a place to put the URL of the video link. Just like when you put a hyperlink into your text.

It says "insert Media" if your put your curser over it and hover.

  17. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic 582 VS 912S

There are two guys in my EAA chapter that have gone from 582s to 912 engines. One in a Mark IV Avid the other in an early Kitfox IV. They both have the UL, 80 hp engines though.

I can't give performance numbers, but they have both said many times that they don't regret the change and that both are not interested in the 100 hp engine. 80 has proven to be more than enough power and the Avid driver has a hard time staying below Vne (with an IVO IFA prop) in cruise.

Sorry, man. I missed the question and had to go back to find it.

How far away from the rib has the fabric pulled, just a small span of the under-camber or quite a bit? I heard of people re-gluing using an equine hypodermic needle with glue in it to put the glue under the fabric. This is most likely just a bandaid fix, though.

  19. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Just dreaming

Metalizing the Avid/Kitfox wing would be problematic. This wing design flexes a lot, so just covering it with metal would hamper that, much less adding a ton of weight.

A C65 engine at ~250 pounds compared to the Rotax 582 at ~75 pound would put a bunch of stress on the structure that it was not designed for and would necessitate the addition of balast in the tail to bring the cg back to spec.

Joey, I'd consider this the last possible option for a novice. Personally, I would not recommend this route to anyone who is not intimately familiar with such a yaw sensitive airplane. I think you may underestimate your own education and experience in aviation prior to your doing this...

I was coming off a fresh tail wheel endorsement (in a Citabria) when I got my Kitfox IV.

I got transition training from a friend of mine who built a Kitfox IV and is a CFI. We spent nearly 10 hours of transition training in order for me to feel proficient in the plane. Some have done with less and some more. My insurance required 10 hours of duel and I needed nearly that.

These little planes are a ton of fun and are not dangerous if you know what you are doing and what to expect. They do NOT fly like a 172 or a Citabria or a Cub. I've been told they handle more like a Pits (but I've never flown a Pits). I would not advise getting your tailwheel then jumping into a plane like this without a little more training from someone who knows how to teach.

    Just my opinion.
