  1. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic pitot tube

I may follow my friend's lead on placement: He put his pitot tube on the rib between the jury strut and the attach point for the lift strut. This was done mostly for protection.

It's hard to bump your head on it there and bend it... (Don't ask).

You would need to talk direct to them. I doubt they would do a custom like that though, one time molding etc.

Google " LPAeroplastics" for their contacts.

    Nice looking plane, Livio.

As Joey (C5) mentioned most of the planes running the 582 motors have a ground adjustable propeller. If you are looking to replace your prop that would be highly recommended. There are many options but the are adjustable to match the plane and motor characteristics.

  6. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic KITFOX STRUT TUBE SIZES?

My buddie who just built the avid/Kitfox hybrid built his own struts too. He made them from one inch material without rod ends on the front strut, only adjusters on the rear strut. Kitfox struts have four rod ends and Avids use only one.

I will see what he used for wall thickness.

You'd have a very breezy cabin. The door frames don't fit that tight. They need the overlap to seal.

Doug can confirm this but I've been told the wont sell parts to anyone without a valid serial number.

How does the airfoil compare to your Avid versus Kitfox wings?

  10. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic One of my boys and my C build.

I think your estimate of 190 for a Subby is very optimistic. I have never seen one - with redrive - that was less than 220# installed weight.

You will also find that the Corvair and VW direct drives are much higher rpm range engines requiring a shorter prop. These short props do not work well at slow airspeeds (like an Avid flies at) compared to a larger slow turning prop. I have seen so many of these planes that the builders chose to go what appeared to be the inexpensive route (VW, Corvair) only to find that the engines were unreliable, maintenance intensive, cooling/mount/cowl issues and the planes never or rarely flew. The proof in the pudding for this is how many Avids/Kitfoxes do you see sporting VW or Corvair motors? Very few, and fewer yet with any appreciable amount of time on them.

Subaru conversions are somewhat the exception to this - due to the use of a redrive and more frequent installs. Their trade off is weight, making the plane basically a single seat aircraft...

Paul H. Poberezny and Ed Fisher are working to reform the SAA - Sport Aviation Association. Returning to the roots of home building and flying fun rather than politics and mega money GA special interests.

You can email Ed directly: raceairdesigns (at) hotmail (dot) com with your name, address, email and phone number to get on their mailing list for future developments. They are not asking for dues or money at this time but will accept donations to help get the organization going.

  12. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Mk IV wing-fold time

Paul - the folding and unfolding is not a super bad process on an Avid Mk IV. 10 minutes max on each end. But, as Bryce said, the transport is the issue. Seven miles is a long way to go on the gear with the tow-bar. It would definitely require a trailer. Now loading and off loading from a trailer plus folding is more hassle and time, meaning you will find excuses to not fly. (Just being honest.)

My advise is get a hangar at the airport. You will enjoy the plane and it fly more.

I was taxxing out when that big fat-assed C5 took off!! That's some scary wake turbulence off that thing! (See :37-:43) The idiot flag waver wanted me to turn onto that intersecting taxiway right away too. I refused...

Seriously, Joey, that probably made a pretty good scare at first look, especially you being out on "the job" so to speak. I'm glad it turned out to be mostly a non-event.

    Safe flight home (soon).

My smart assed remark is around the fact that the Ravin was a scratch built plane so the quality of welding could be very questionable. That being said if you are comfy with your inspection skills or are doing a total rebuild and can inspect everything the design is sound enough. Anything that has gone through Brett's shop will have been inspected very well. He is a very good fabricator and knows his trade.
