  1. Doublecluch added a post in a topic Avid Flyer Mk IV - $18450

As much as I would love to jump on this deal the more I think about it it's just not the right time. I've already spent a good chunk on my A model. Grrrrr

On the side note. I know it's a different aircraft but does anybody know if the header tank from a KF 1 will fit my A? Or if I'll have to do a bunch of modifications?

That price is making it really hard for me to ignore this ad. I've seen it a couple times. It would definitely get me in the air a lot quicker than dumping a ton of money into my A model. Not to mention it's a wee bit bigger..

That looks like a break Foundation to start with. I just started the journey of pulling this tank VW off the front end of my Avid A model. I might be very interested in that 582 FWF. I know you would have is a kitfox but I'll be fabricating mounts anyways.

  6. Doublecluch added a post in a topic Hydraulic brake options?

Ha! Right after I posted this I ended up on the Matco website. Didn't even realize they're here in Salt Lake that's great to know.  I'm going to be pushing the firewall out a couple of inches for more leg room. That would probably be the perfect time to adapt hydraulic Master cylinders to the new pedals.

    Hydraulic brake options?
What kind of hydraulic braking options do I have? We have disc brake and I think I've also seen hydraulic drum? Can the mechanical drums on my A model be converted to hydraulic? Has anybody ever made their own custom disc or drum set up? I was brainstorming and thinking of the possibilities of a dual handbrake setup. Kind of like turning Brakes in a sand rail?  I'm just sitting here in my garage staring at my Shovelhead brainstorming. Or maybe we could call it dreaming.

  8. Doublecluch added a post in a topic 88? 582 and drive on eBay

    Jim,
My Volkswagen is bolted on to the firewall, I'm sure it's nowhere near a 582 pattern. So I'm positive I'm going to have to do some fabricating to that engine mount. Should I just pick up a 582 engine mount and make it work?

88? 582 and drive on eBay
Description says it was bought new in 88 and never run. 582 with what looks like a B drive. I know you can't swing a giant prop with a B drive but I was  thinking this might be a good core for a rotax rick 670? Going to be pulling that Volkswagen off of my a model avid  and doing a 670. What do you guys think.?

Do you have a reduction also?

Thanks Jim. I guess my picture did end up uploading?
That was a thought but my brain was telling me it needed to be hooked up to something. I've taken the doors off so I can mess around inside but I did hold one up while he was sitting in it to see just how tight. I've been seriously looking into building my own bubble doors. My original thought of buying this plane was to get my ticket in it. However I'm wondering if two of us will fit. Haha I thought about creating a center yoke and then moving throttles to the outside edges of the dash. Kind of like the Zenith 701.

    Talk to me Goose
    Talk to me goose!
FINALLY! After over a month of waiting and anticipating my N146AF and custom enclosed trailer is home. Getting it registered, are worthy, and all of that hoopla starts. I'm excited but I also have a couple of concerns. After a close inspection looks like I might have to reinforce an aileron bracket on the inside of the wing. Little pieces of fabric need to be tightened up I guess? Fixed the kind of torn a little. Nothing major however. Biggest concern is holy cow this thing is Tiny, when I purchased it I sat inside and thought it would be okay but the other day a friend came over and we both climbed in. I'm a big dude, 6'2" 230 lb he is about 5 7 and the same way. It was definitely a very tight fit. Made me wonder if the yolk could even be successfully maneuver. Previous owner told me that it was built to Mark 4 specs but it's an A model.. the motor mount is actually bolted in instead of welded because it has the Volkswagen on it. It does have wood stringers through the fuselage though. Electric trim. It has electric start on it and he installed a second battery to power the start and the motor. I'm considering pulling all of that out and just hand propping for conserving wait. The data plate says it's 911 gross weight, is there anything I can do to this little fella to increase. Gross weight?
I'm strongly considering pulling  the VW off and going with a Rotax Rick 670. I'm strongly considering pulling the Volkswagen off and going with a rotax rick 670. It would be nice to do a Yamaha conversion of some kind..
I pulled the cowling and dash to start running down wires and just seeing how things are connected. Thankfully it's not a complete rats nest . Vertical speed and altimeter don't look hooked up to me?
Trying to upload pictures and it keeps failing. I'll try again in a response.

  13. Doublecluch added a post in a topic Rotax Red Head?

Ha! I knew somebody installed one just couldn't remember who. I was wondering if that motor would be a good option but I think I'll just bite the bullet and go with the rotax Rick.

How do you think it would compare to the Rotax Rick 670?  if I'm not mistaken the power output with the Rick exhaust is  about the same?

I think it does have single ignition. Looks like it has the same upgrades as a rotax rick?

    Rotax Red Head?
I'm poking around at rotax 582 or 670s for a potential swap on my Avid A model. Came across a 583 with a redhead on eBay for a pretty good price on ebay .I know the gray have better cooling. But what is a red?

Is that the Galaxy Tab 4? What app are you running?  I have one and I'm considering velcroing it to my instrument panel instead of buying an iPad.

That's that's pretty much what I was confused about thank you. I'd much rather spend that money on a radio..

    Looking for Transponder advice
So I am completely confused. Well maybe not completely. My new Avid doesn't have a transponder. Does have an elt way back in the back of the fuselage but I haven't had it checked out yet. Technically I don't even have the plane yet, It's waiting for my trailer in Las Vegas. I've been all over eBay looking for a complete transponder set up and I'm lost. Clearly, I need the transponder,  tray, antenna, and encoder. There is a Garmin for sale that is complete from antenna to transponder for $399 It's Tso'd. I'd rather not waste $400 on something that's no good for me.
