  1. C5Engineer, I have to ask, why is the AF Commendation Medal displayed in your shadow box instead of your highest medal, the Meritorious Service Medal?  I'm sure there's a special reason for that.

  2. Glad to hear you're back in the air.  I just put a deposit on a KF 5, so as soon as I can get some time scheduled with Stick & Rudder, I'll be checking out the Idaho back country as well.

  3. I would turn that shelve into a work bench/pegboard. Take all the shelves off, cut the two front uprights down the 32' to 36" (whatever height you prefer a work bench),frame in a work bench with two of the shelves, use the two uprights you cut off ripped into 1 x 1's to frame in the peg board, and use the last shelf to put a shelf under the work bench.

Attached in a picture of the one in my hangar that I made out of my old wing building table. I would have made the lower shelf full length and tied it into the main legs but my hangarmate wanted a place for the vacuum cleaner. I have a better example in my garage at home.

Looks great.  Mine is a bit more cramped, even more so now that everything is packed for the move.  Looks like we have the same noisy air compressor.

  4. I think the peg board is a great idea.  If you don't have wall space for it, you could attach two of them to the front of your shelf that open in opposite directions.  Or, you could divide the front of your shelves into  thirds, and put two sliding peg boards up that only cover two thirds of your shelf space at a time.  That way you don't need any extra wall space.

We fly to Idaho for the beautiful scenery and to be around pilots who like to fly to remote strips.

We fly over Bakersfield on our way and I wonder what the attraction to Bakersfield would be for someone who lives in Gods Country?

    John,

That's simple, so we can see our grandkids.  I have a son who lives on the Central Coast, so we stop over there as well.  Flying will just make it easier to visit more often.

  6. First off, you're a much nicer guy than I am.  I think kicking the crap out of my hanger mate would have been my first order of business.  I think you've already received some pretty good advice, so on your repairs, I'll keep my 2 cents to myself, and wish you good luck.

  7. Never mind, I found the answer on my own.

  8. The reason for my question is that I'm looking at a KF 5 with a Subaru engine, and not all airports have MOGAS.  So, I just wanted to make sure switching between MOGAS and AVGAS, and mixing the two cause no problems with the engine.  You guys are awesome.  Thanks.

  9. Is there any issue mixing AVGAS and MOGAS?  If you're flying cross country on MOGAS, and your fuel stop only has AVGAS, will you have any issues mixing the two?  Will your GPH, your cruise speed, engine temps, or anything else change?  I know the $$$ in your wallet will change, but I'm concerned about aircraft performance.

  10. Any idea what HP the NSI Subaru EA81 turbo should be putting out?  I'm looking at a KF 5 with this engine, and wondering what kind of power I could expect.

  11. Allen, I absolutely agree with you.  Although I'm not an A&P, an auto mechanic, or any other kind mechanic, I do know how to wrench on engines, I do have a good grasp on what makes these airplanes fly.  I don't have tons of money, but being retired, I do have tons of time.  With all that being said, I think the Subaru is the way to go for me.

  12. "Engines are a very personal choice.  There are plenty of Subaru's flying.  They work, no argument.  It's all what you want."  That is a very true statement Av8r3400.  I'm not looking to be a "Flying Cowboy," I'm just wanting to get into a KF 5 at an affordable price, for me, and to be able to afford the upkeep on the airplane on my retirement income.  Thanks for all the info guys, I appreciate it.
