  1. Can you elaborate a little bit on that firewall seal? Steady as she goes. Many of us have done this 1 or 2 hrs at a time while working full time. It’ll all come together. Looking good so far!

sure, I used some leftover baggage door seal I found at school. It's soft and pliable, making a much better seal than the felt tape that was previously on there.

  2. Just want to update you all with a few pics of the progress and even moving the project from school to back home.

A big thank you to Ronin for the new landing gear, wheels, and brakes and to Avidflyer1 for the 68" Warp Drive prop. I'm out of A&P school and now working as an A&P for the local FBO, so I haven't had a lot of time for fixing up the Kitfox. I am hoping to fire up the 582 this weekend and install the windshield within the next week or so.

  3. Great job TJay! It looks awesome and I'm sure it'll fly just as good as it looks.

  4. Good point, it was the original design that I modified to be able to fit the new battery. The original design had a bungee cord holding down the battery, lol.

  5. Just wanted to give a little update, this week I started on fixing the fuselage bent tubing, installed the exhaust and firewall seal, and started to prep the brand new Model 3 gear I bought from Ronin. Last week was the fuel system, battery tray, instrument panel and wiring. I also removed all the Lexan which I'll use as my away from school project at home. I'm still hoping to have it close to if not finished in a month which is also the end of my A&P schooling. My Kitfox will probably be the first logbook I put an entry in as an A&P. Welp back to the grind I go...

  6. Say this space race is a waste next time you fire up Google maps, the GPS in your airplane, or get an accurate forecast for a cross country flight. Sure money could probably better spent elsewhere but that could be said of pretty much anything that has multi-billion dollar budgets and government involvement. I do agree that it's sad that some of societies greatest technological advances have come out of military advancement, aviation being a prime example.

  7. I got the oversize radiator installed today. I use the original mounting mounting holes and built a bracket to make it work. I'm pretty happy how it all turned out and it's a little less than a half a pound heavier than the old radiator. Next up the exhaust mount...20180205_131541_39393059194_o.thumb.jpg.20180205_131511_40105178631_o.thumb.jpg.

  8. Well I screwed up this post royally, but as you can see from the pics above that my 582 is now back on the airframe and I'm currently plumbing it up. I'll be mounting the exhaust and a new slightly larger aluminum belly radiator next week, if you have any suggestions or tips let me know. It's coming along and its quickly become a labor of love, I'm having so much fun!

  9. Welcome and make yourself at home. Keep living the dream and hold on to that wife of yours.

  10. That grey head looks so nice and clean. How many hours are on it?  I'm coming up on 300 hours this year and may follow your lead. I really appreciate the tear down pics.

I noticed the EGT locations look to be possibly too close to the manifold flange. See: http://www.ultralightnews.ca/exhaustsystems/egt_probelocation.htm

It would be a good time to measure them and remedy if you think it’s worthwhile.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into this. There are old holes further back on the y-pipe that were welded over so who knows. My 582 had around 50 hours on it and then sat for close to 10 years. It's been a real fun project along with fabricating a whole bunch of specialty tools out of material around my school. I put the gearbox and starter on today. I'm just waiting for my thermostat gasket to finish mounting the ignition and then it'll be ready to get back on the plane20180201_170225_25163034007_o.thumb.jpg.20180201_100921_28255270279_o.thumb.jpg.

  11. Just wanted to post an update, the measurements all are good so I'm putting the 582 back together. After assembly this week, I'll be working on the fuel and cooling systems with a carb and fuel pump rebuild, new hoses throughout, and fix/replace a leaky radiatior.

  12. I have a buddy at school selling his Bose Aviation X headset for $200. I have a standard DC HC10-60 but after doing some research and reading this thread, I might take him up on his offer.

  13. I went to Lowes and found what you mentioned C5Engineer. It's a 3/8" ID hose but I think it'll work great, it's in 10' bulk at around $10. Also they had 1/8" and 3/32" clear orangish colored hose labeled "Mini-fuel" so I'll be using the 1/8" line for my primer and carb lines. Lowes had an all around great selection of clear hoses. I went to NAPA for my 1/4" and 5/16" Gates fuel hoses as well as 1" Gates radiator hose. It was a successful day for hose shopping and now I got all new rubber for my airplane.
