What pitch to use on a 582 3 blade 68" Kiev 2.58 gearbox
I got the engine running today.  The wooden propeller from the 532 wouldn't fit, so I started off with my new 68" Kiev three blade propeller.  The instructions said that the starting point for a 582 should be 11-14, so I set it at 12.  The old 532 Tachometer seems wildly off, so I have connected up a Tiny Tach.  I warmed up the water temperature, increased throttle to get the EGTs up and then pushed it up to wide open throttle, but only got to 3400 RPM.  I am running a 2.58 gear box.  I am not sure if it is the throttle assembly or the propeller that is giving me the issue.  So can anyone provide at least some idea of what pitch should be used?  I tried the test twice and still need to break in the engine.  I am currently running the gas at 100:1 in addition to the oil pump as recommended by Rotax in the 582 installation manual.
    TIA

Can you test 582 oil injection pump without starting
Well, I have my 582 to the point where it has all the fluids and I can run the starter.  I hooked up the oil injection and bled the system by removing the bleeder bolt.  I would have thought I could just turn over the engine and I should see oil start to creep up the oil injection lines, but I am not.  Is this a valid test or is the pump slow enough that the engine needs to be running for a bit before I will see oil in the injection lines?
    TIA

Sounds similar to the plane that I am working on...thinking of leaving them mounted on the 582 and seeing where it goes.

No biggie, that is the one that I have been looking at....of course I am also considering cutting one of the singles down a bit to "make it" fit.

My 532 had the same K&N filters as the 582 came with.  The 582 has the oil injection pump and intake on it, which is what I believe pushed it over the limit.  I had to take the front carb filter off to get the cowling to mount back on.
I am thinking about ordering #6 here: https://www.leadingedgeairfoils.com/rotax-air-filters.html
Just want to get some measurements tomorrow to make sure that it will fit.

It was a compliment your plane seems to have a number of things on it that I have been searching for... Each time I see a different angle... I seem to see something that I have had trouble locating

I actually need an air filter like that if it will fit inside my cowling.
No slight was intended though... The joke about it was, I think we were talking about oil reservoirs and your picture showed a coolant overflow bottle that I needed... And still need by the way... Have been looking at squeeze bottles, as you suggested... But no luck so far.

JimChuck, You are always showing me pictures of stuff I need that has nothing to do with the question.  I was rough fitting everything today and found that the front carb air filter is too wide for the cowling by .5 inch.  How far out from the carb face does that air filter stick out from the face of the carb?  Directly out from the front carb I have about 3.5 inches to the cowl.  What is the part #?

    Thanks

    Cooling system design
    Refer to the attached image.
The 532 to 582 saga continues.  My cooling system for the 532 did not look like this.  The coolant expansion tank connects between point 4 and the radiator instead of point 7 and the radiator.  First of all does anyone see any issue with this implementation?  I really don't want to have to rebuild a cooling system for it.  Second of all, with the coolant expansion tank being directly connected to the water pump housing and the line to the overflow tank being above the water pump (it is the highest point in the system) do I even need to install a vent line from the water pump?  The 532 did not have one.
    TIA

For the 582, what version of the Tiny Tach is everyone suggesting?  The TT2A?  I have seen on other posts that people were setting this to 180 (2 sparks per revolution) for the 582, is this the correct setting?  JimChuck, I now that is what you have already said....but am getting ready to order and want to make sure that I order the correct model and set it up appropriately.
    TIA

    Why are mags remoted
Is there any reason that the mags on a 582 need to be remoted?  I am replacing a 532, which had two coils, and they were both remoted.  I am putting in a 582 and do not see any prevailing reason to remote them.  They are currently mounted on a metal plate just under the carbs (when engine is inverted).  I would like to leave them there.
    Any thoughts?

I don't doubt that and I happen to think that is true on my certified aircraft as well.  However, when I have to get a condition inspection, I am guessing that the mechanic is going to want to see a more concrete representation.

Yes, the 532 had a points ignition, but was thinking since this tach was pulling from the charging circuit that it would be right

Just so that I am clear, you are saying to wrap the one sensor wire around two of the plug wires?  I only ask for this clarification, because the Tiny Tach that I am looking at, specifically the TT2A, only has one sensor wire and of course, they show it being wrapped around a single plug wire.

    Tachometer
I am in the process of doing an engine swap from a 532 to a 582.  I have noticed that the current tachometer, which appeared to be working fine, was wired directly into the charging circuit in parallel with the regulator.  I am reasonably sure that this should work equally well with the 582, but thought I would check with those with more experience than I.  I have seen that many people are using a tiny tach, but my concern is that it is only measuring a single mag, so of course measuring mag drops would not be possible.  Any thoughts?

Just got another response from the Rotax forum: http://www.rotax-owner.com/en/rotax-forum/1-2-stroke-technical-questions/6135-oil-injection-bottle-installation#15833
That indicates that it may need to be above the input to the injection into the intake.  Not sure I would be able to make that one work.  I may have to disable the oil injection and run mixed.

Therein was the rub... None of the reservoirs were able to meet that criteria.. Not enough vertical space to accomplish that.

Ok, I just talked to two engine shops and am posting my findings here in case someone else comes looking.  In an inverted installation the gravity feed must handle up to the injection outlets on the pump, not the inlet. So the minimum oil level (possibly the bottom of the reservoir) must be above this point.
The oil injection pump is gravity fed up to this point and then the pump portion takes over to pressure it into the oil injection lines.

Yes, that is what the instructions say, but does that not pre-suppose a plugs up installation?  In a plugs up installation that is the high point of the system.  That is the crux of the question.

I also have an aux tank behind the seat.  The Highest mark on the main fuel tank is 7 gallons and there is still a bit to go, so 9 or 10 is probably right...and the aux is probably around 5 gallons.  So I figure max is probably 15, which would require 39 oz, so I was thinking a quart and a half would be about right...if I could find the right shaped tank.  But I have to determine how high the bottom of the tank needs to be.  If I size it right, but the bottom of the tank is too low...it won't feed the oil, because calling it a pump is somewhat a misnomer, because it is gravity fed, so it won't pull the oil if it is too low.  The other issue is that the motor mount keeps getting in the way of many tanks.
According to Rotax, for 15 gallons, you should have a 3 quart tank...that is not happening.  I don't have any pictures handy, but my thoughts are pilot side firewall, which is where the coolant bottle is or the passenger side firewall, where all of the electrical connections are and the remoted ignitions and the capacitor.  The other option would be on top of the motor mount, but there isn't a whole lot of clearance to the cowl.
I guess I was hoping that someone with a similar aircraft had already skinned this cat.
I think that I can get rid of the capacitor and I am going to try and keep the new magnetos on the engine...but haven't test fitted yet to see if it is possible.
Obviously, the key here is just how high does it have to be and that is the question I haven't gotten an answer to yet.

Also have to remember that I have a header tank and no wing tanks, so I don't have as much room in this area.  I am considering going with a larger tank than I believe that I need and then ensure that I keep my oil level high enough to meet the requirement, if I can manage to fit it in and make it work.
My issue is defining what the requirement is in an inverted installation.  I am trying really hard to keep the oil injection for so many reasons, but not to the detriment of the engine.
I figure the minimum requirement is one of the three:
Where the oil line connects to the pump (I figure this is the least likely)Where the injection pump is attached to the engine (possible if the pump actually pushed the oil into the injection tubes)The highest point of the injection lines (which would put it close to the bottom of the motor mount and will be the hardest to accommodate).I have asked the question here, on the Rotax Owner's forum and to the guy that I got the engine from, But no one has answered the question yet.  I guess my next step will be to try and contact someone from Rotax proper.

Ok, interesting solution on the inside of the firewall and demonstrates my other question.  With the oil injector pump being gravity fed, does the output of the tank need to be above the oil pump or above the injection lines.  It would not appear as though output of this tank would just (barely?) be above the level of the oil injection pump entrance.  The instructions indicate that it must be above the input line of the pump, but I was thinking this meant in a vertical installation, not an inverted one, in which the oil has a higher hill to climb.
BTW, do you have a source for that coolant bottle?  I have one exactly like it that I need to replace, but haven't been able to find one yet.  I like its compactness and had about decided I was going to have to go with another design.

I had already looked at this one and can't see that I can get it high enough.  I was also looking at the ones with less capacity, but having the same problem.

For some reason I am thinking that you have more vertical room above the motor mount than I do and my motor mount seems a lot more busy in that area.  Directly above the rear mount bolts, I only have four inches to the cowl, but I will double check tomorrow and probably post a pic of what I am dealing with.  I am also guessing that the oil output has to be above the injection lines into the intake.  I am posting a picture of where the engine arrived with one of the oil fittings busted off, which I still have to replace, but you can also see the oil lines coming up to the bottom of the engine.
