Well got a bit done after taking care of the yard, it definitely needed some attention. Let me know if I post to many pictures, I take a lot to help with my memory.
The silver box is a heater.
This is a shot of the damage done by the safety cable from the inside.
Whelen strobe power supply is quite noisy, I think I am going to remove them.
This prop is very interesting, can't figure it out, there is a switch on the panel with "climb" on one side and nothing on the other.
Valve to shut off water flow to heater.
Lots of oil under the cowl, it appears to be coming from the oil injection lines.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I think you are right about that mess being a way to deal with an alignment issue. The bungees were changed 2 years ago and seem to be real tight. I will go check out you suggested posts tonight after work. Mike

991CD and meI will use this thread to document my ownership of 991CD, model 1 S/N 207. My intended use for this bird is to quickly get me back in the air so the first round of maintenance will include a very good condition inspection and repair of airworthiness items I find. I also intend to put CD on a diet. The first weight reduction is the removal of the BRS chute system, it is out of date and the webbing looks questionable anyway. Today I removed the interior and the BRS and started looking over the airframe. The first step was a wash job, boy is this plane dirty!
BRS, rocket/chute container, 22lBS.
All that remains is some of the webbing.
I assume this is the infamous "Jesus" bolt. Should I modify the airframe now with another bracket or could I put that off for a winter project?
This area of the gear looks a little hillbilly, if you look close you can see where the safety cable has cut right thru the metal doubler inside the airframe, gotta love duct tape repairs!
As corny as it looks, it seems to have been this way for a while. I think I will leave this for later unless it taxis weird.
Small hole in the fabric. Having never done any fabric repair, could I leave this for later and can I patch it from the inside?
Anyone recognize this stamping I am pretty sure it is covered with Stits as there is lots of red, what looks like polybrush inside?
Every thing looks pretty good in the control system and there is very little slop.
Small fuel leak, looks like someone has been chasing this before, I have some good sealer that should get me through the flying season.
Hard to see in this picture but the spars appear to have been sloshed with some kind of primer, maybe zinc chromate. Well thats it for this episode back to work tomorrow. Mike

It was kind of sad in a way, the one guy is 81, in bad health, he started flying in the 50's. His partner was in his 70's and never got his PPL, but flew UL's extensively, he had a Kolb there for sale as well. The older of the two lite right up when I fired it up, he even offered to mow a strip if I wanted to fly it, I could see in his eyes the aviation lust. He is suffering from cancer and other health problems and his time is short. Mike

Well I went at looked at Kitfox S/N 107 today, it was in very good shape with all of its paperwork!
It will need a good cleaning and inspection but will make a fine flying machine for me! Should be in my garage next week. Mike

Going to look at a KF 1 on wednesdayGoing to look at a Kitfox model 1 on Wednesday and have a few questions. It has not flown for a couple years, what should I look at? As an A&P I will look at all the airframe items I would usually check. I am new, new, new to the 2smoke world, I just love that term, this one has a 532 single ignition for an engine. I have talked with the A&P that had been signing off the condition inspection for the last 5 years and he claims it is a solid little airplane, not sure of his experience with EAB though. The current owner is not the builder so I will check over the paperwork that they have. How important is it to get get the build log/manual with the airplane? They claim the plane has been flown 460 hours since completion. My intention is to have something to fly while I build the Raven and this would fill that bill as well as providing the perfect Mexican blueprint for my project. One thought I am kicking around would be to install the 582 on this plane, not fond of single ignition airplanes. Any thoughts and comments are appreciated. Mike

I am retired from Skywest Airlines, but I did work part time at the FBO for about 3 years. I have a much more structured part time gig at NAPA auto parts now. I do keep up on the local scuttle butt out at Kaletta if you have any questions. Mike

I decided it would be easier for me to move around with the gear installed temporarily. I also started looking over some of the workmanship on the airframe and I'm not to pleased with a few things that I have seen. I also checked the motor mount and found it doesn't line up with the airframe. Any suggestions on fixing these kind of problems are welcome. There is no build log for anything I got and the paperwork from plans for you that came with it are confusing and poorly copied at best. Mike

Welcome to the forum! I saw that bird on barnstormers a while ago but So Cal was just to far to go get it, the asking price was reasonable for sure.
