    HI guys!
I'm out at Zepherhills Airport, Fl waitin' on chopndrag to do a cowl swap and thought I'd holler while killin'time. On the Mk4 wing build, it shows an aluminum leading edge. It wasn't included in my kit. On my way back north I'm figurin' on stoppin' at Aircraft Spruce to pick up trailing edge and I was thinkin' about gettin' leading edge too. Measuring the short nose ribs, they are 14 1/4". The leading edge I'm lookin' at is on page 58 of their catalog. Options are 12" and 18". Strange, it says it comes in a roll too. Questions: Does a roll of leading edge sound familiar? Which would I want the 18" or  12"?

    Guys!!
Holy s**t Batman! This build manual is 10 times better than what I have!! I've done nothing but skim over it, but what I see is Bible! Beg pardon.

    Back here again!
I should've mentioned, my manual calls for 17 3/4 centers on the ribs. I just thought I had 6 extra! Jeez! I've got 18 ribs and 6 half ribs (fuel tanks).....12" centers! I'm guessing this kit was sold at the same time upgrades were being made. I got caught in the transition. Maybe the Mk4 build manual would be the one to follow? Gonna study it. I saw the beefed up version of the stiffener, hell for stout, like it! Oh! (Just had an epiphany!) I see the egg method! You actually squish the spar to an egg shape! There ain't no way you're gonna egg that .083 wall to get that stiffener in. Wicks catalogue doesn't have 2 1/2, .083, I'm hopin' Aircraft Spruce does. I'm gonna get a trial piece and play with it. Yeah, the spar cut out, the way you did it is the way that I will. Don't want to be in a situation where you've cut it twice and it's still too short, a lot easier to cut off than to add on! Hey! How many coats of epoxy varnish do I put on? Tha book calls for 3 coats of the nitrate dope. I've got PF surface cleaner. Good enough for glue prep? If not, what would ya use?

Thanks for gettin back so quick!
Yeah, I really didn't think it be that bad being a 1/16" off on each spar, but it was a descrepency. Got ya' JimChuk. At each of the flaperon hinge point there has to be a splice! Looked at the Aircraft Spruce link and saw the trailing edge. I couldn't tell what it was in the Wicks catalogue. Love the clamps too! I'll have a look at the MkV build and see what they say. No, there ain't anything in the book that saw about clamping and egg shelling the stiffener. I don't understand. Do you mean that I would contour the edges to fit the profile of the ID of the 2 1/2" spar?, I will build the wings to spec, 30" outside to outside of the spars, except with a 1" twist opposed to the 2" called for. Poly-Fiber for me, gotta love that MEK!  Hysol 9460 and digital scale for proportions, got it written down. How do you get it from Kitfox? Gotta get on their website? Dholly, I was wondering how to nail that hole transfer. Another great idea! What did you make it out of? Looks like leather. I saw that you improvised outside the lines on the rear spar cutout template. Start long and trim to fit?
Thanks again guys! Oh and hey! Anybody goin' to Sebring, FL for that expo? I'm headin' down to make a cowl swap and time it to go, 25th to the 28th is what chopndrag said.
    G'night

    Hey guys!
Yes, I'm gonna beef 'er up. Figuring on gusseting with lightening holes. I plan to beef up the truss and the areas both sides below the cockpit and above the mains. I've got poster paper to cut and number for templates. When I get them in, I'll take pictures to submit for your approval!

Avid C HH wing build 101
Help! It's Friday the 13th, under an ice storm warning and I need guidance on my wing build!
First: The center to center measurement of the holes for the wing attachment pins on the fuselage is 27 3/8". The book calls for a outside dimension of 30" on the wing spars (that's where you set you stops on the build horses). With 2 1/2" OD spars, I'm a 1/8" shy, should've measured 27 1/2". The spar openings on the ribs do measure 25" on the inside, which tally to 30". Question: Do I move the blocks in an 1/8" to hit the centers on the fuselage? I'll have to shave off the open end of the ribs to allow for this. The wing tanks do measure 24 3/4-7/8, so they are o.k. What would you do? Am I not seeing something?
Second: I'm supposed to trim the trailing end of the ribs. This is one of the first things I'm to do. The end result of this step is to utilize a trailing edge cable. Doing this would give the appearance of a serrated edge like a ol' Spad. I want a straight trailing edge. I saw in the Wicks catalogue (still waiting on Aircraft Spruce) aluminum trailing edge, but don't know what it really is. Wicks only sells a 10' length so I'd have a splice. I saw efil 01's build on here and he used an aluminum trailing edge (great lookin' plane too!). Question: Where did you guys get the edge? Using the AL edge, did you just leave the trailing edge of the rib square instead of tapering the cap strip. Does anyone have any details; close up pictures, drawings of what you did? I remember seeing a build where they even reinforced a trailing edge by glueing tubing inside the angle. Akflyr?
Third: I have to shave the spar stiffener down about an 1/16". What would be the best way to shave it and keep it true? A planer? Looking at the install, I'm thinkin', what a pain! Make a push stick and shove 'er in. Gotta a better way? Stiffener measures 2 3/8, ID of the spar (.083 wall) 2 5/16". It looks to me like the only thing that holds it in place when installed, is tail end of the rivets holdin the middle of the strut attach bracket. Right?
Fourth: For structural adhesive I've got 3M 2216 Epoxy Adhesive. Sold in'89, it's as hard as a rock. Whadda y'all use? I have non-tautening nitrate dope (CPC Certified Coatings, vintage 1989). That's what the book calls for on all wooden parts. I trialed a piece of plywood with a couple of coats and it's not water repellant. It is powerful stuff and looks o.k. I do have Poly-Fiber epoxy varnish. Is that what I should use? I
I'm gonna stop here for now. The answers to these questions will get me goin'. I sure would appreciate you guys lettin' me know what ya'. Somebody said the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask! Well.........

    Thanks Mark!
I see, electronic ignition, so no independent fire like you would have with mags. If you have mags and the alternator quits spittin' out power, she's gonna run. Electronic ignition on a UL, alternator quits and once the battery goes flat, ya' lose fuel flow and she'll quit you. And like you were sayin, even a problem in the circuitry or components and it's done. Sound right? Did y'all talk to them about it and what did they say? These are relatively new engines on the market, so I'll bet there's bugs. It's a while before I have to make a decision what powerplant to use, but I'm keepin' my eyes open. Thanks again!

    UL260si, what do ya' think?
    Howdy Boys!
I've got my horses, garage organized, and I'm gonna start buildin'wings. I've been lookin' at powerplants for this plane and have been lookin real hard at the UL260is. I defiantly want to hang a 4 stroke on now, for I think, obvious reasons, and the UL sounds like a very good engine. Has anyone out there installed one or heard about anyone who has put one on an Avid C like mine? Air cooled, fuel injected, direct drive and more, make it quite attractive. Evidentially, they're gonna start puttin' them on Kitfoxes! I have concerns though. It weighs 159lbs and at 107hp, is that too much for an Avid C? Do ya' think it would fit under a conventional cowling off of a Mk 4? I do not know! I am wanting to make a cowling swap with chopndrag down in Florida, his conventional (Cessna style) for my round cowling. Surely, if you can fit a 912 under there you could fit a UL. Heck, they've fit 0-200's haven't they? Chopndrag is pretty hot on my round cowl, and well, I wouldn't mind taking a trip down there!
I do know I'm gettin' the cart way of the horse here, but I do like to have a plan. As I build my kit, I'll post pictures and my many questions under the Model C section. Yes, I already got questions galore for you guys!!!! I'll post'em. Post 'em?.....Hmmmm I feel like a computer nerd.

    Thanks! You guys are awesome!
Jim, I saw the truss reinforcement you did. While there I also saw seat support by wfletch. If I put the added gusseting above the mains too, I'll be flyin' a tank! Perforating the iron some would lighten' her up though. It'd weigh a bit, but I think it wouldn't be an issue. Total (guess): 5lbs max. All I'm seein' on the pull sheets is a sling and cushion for seat. Didn't see anything in the building manual about installation either. Got 'em, but there's got to be a better way. Yeah Ed, I'm still torn about powder coatin, but I do see your point. Powder coatin' does a heck of job, but hard to get off when it's on. I saw TJays Kitfox 1 build (outstanding too) and so I know there'll probably be addons and changes. Yessir! I'm gonna build the wings on horses with cradles glued to the floor. dholly, you're a genius!
You know, lookin at the manual, they're buildin' just a basic airplane. I want to build something more, something nice! After seein' what TJay has got, all I can say is "I want that!" I been into the forum and looking at the manual all day. My head's justa spinnin' with questions. One thing at a time!
Thanks again for your help. Be talkin' too ya'!

Hiya EDMO! Wander where that post ended up! I'm losing stuff all the time, always puttin' it somewhere where I can find it! I thought I posted it in General Hanger.
I'm not really concerned about speed, more about stability. Heck, I'm retired! I ain't in a hurry to get anywhere! How would cutting down on the twist affect stall speed? Heck, my manual says, "THE REAR SPAR AT THE WINGTIP SHOULD BE TWO (2) inches HIGHER THAN THE ROOT END OF THE SPAR WHEN THE WING IS RIGHT SIDE UP."
Yes, I would have to shim the spars up to allow for twist and the camber of the ribs. Thought a table would be a nice solid building platform. I know I'm gonna kick a saw horse and move everything.
Hey EDMO, you ain't heard anything from from Dave0415? If you or anyone else has an Avid or building one, I'd love to pay you a visit! I'm central Illinois and ain't afraid of drivin'!

    Fuselage Reinforcement
Hi guys! Thought I already made a post on this subject, but I was wrong! I'll try again.
After my inventory of the my newly boughten kit, the conclusion is that the majority of the kit is here. The guy who sold it to me had been cleaning and sanding on the fuselage: rust which had bled through, paint voids and such. He was planning on touching up those areas with the epoxy chromate that was used before. I'm thinkin' No. I'm thinkin' sandblast and powder coat the whole thing. Before that takes place I may want to add more support. A friend of mine noticed a uncovered kit for sale on Barnstorms which had additional support welded in. The support consisted of tubular support under the seats and gusseting welded in below the cockpit and above the mains. I would've never considered doing this. I thought she looked pretty stout. Anybody else do such a thing? I ain't plannin' on any aerobatics!
A couple of more questions: The book calls for horses to build the wings. I'm thinkin' a 4'X16' table. Did y'all use tables? And do y'all see any adhesion issues gluing the fabric to a powder coated surface?
Here's a picture of what they did:

    Fuselage Reinforcement
Howdy boys! I've gone though my recently bought kit, and by golly, looks like she's pretty well all there. All the chromalloy parts and the fuselage were painted with epoxy chromate primer. There are small amounts of rust coming through in places, no pitting at all. Instead of touching up, I'm gonna take a step back and strip, sandblast and powder coat all. A friend noticed, on Barnstorms, pictures of an uncover kit which showed additional gusseting welded below the cockpit and above the gear. Also bracing was welded in below the seats. Do y'all feel it's nessecary and have any of you guys done the same? I'll want to do these "addons" before I get it coated. And speaking of powder coating, do ya' think there'd be an adhesion issue gluing the fabric to a powder coated surface?

So with chopndrag's cowl, Iv2plyguitar's FWF, this boy could be set pretty good. First: Hey chopndrag, you got paint on that cowl? And I'm thinking that we'd have to swap the boot cowls too. Second: Hey Iv2plyguitar, what'cha got? Is it a gray or blue head? What's TT/SMOH? I talked to the gut in Texas with the 17hr blue head. It's got an "E" drive that turns with a 3:1 ratio. He's spinnin' a 4 blade prop (pusher). I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work on a 2/3 blade prop. Let me ask, could a guy get tractor blades for a 4 bladed prop, has anybody seen such a thing on a kit built airplane? I'm thinkin', and I know that's dangerous, that with a 4 bladed prop with that round cowl, you'd have an awesome lookin' airplane. Just a thought.
Lookin' at the kit and for some reason the jury strut attachment brackets were deleted. I did find 4 unidentified brackets. I'll send a picture of what I found. Any ideas?

The spinner was a fiberglass blank. Other than being a wooden 2 blade prop, I don't know. That being said if Rodney don't take it, I'll be lookin' for both. Really would prefer a warp 3 blade. Why? The only thing I know is, I like the way it looks. If these pictures work (think I have it, had to click a button in settings), y'all can see the cowl, engine mount and fiberglass fuel tanks.
    Still going through parts,
    Wyatt
Oh hey! On Barnstormers there' a '07, 17hr 582 blue head for $3900. It come off a parachute. Don'know if it's electric start. I'm interested.

Tuesday the 27th we trailered the rest of my kit home. I'm now in the process of inventorying pieces and parts. I have a pretty good idea of how I'm gonna organize, there sure is a lot of "stuff"! The deal wasn't as good as I figured. When I picked it up, Rodney said the prop and spinner stayed with the engine. The deal was, I bought the kit minus the engine. Oh well, live and learn. I did call him back this morning and offered $250 for the prop and spinner. He's thinkin' about it.
I did find the ser# 504 on one of the pull sheets. Like I said, I'm in process of inventorying everything. I have to weld on the rudder peddle support, which was broken. I don't have a tig welder, so I'll gas weld it. Since it's chrom alloy, I'm sure it's a specific rod. Anyone tell me what it is? The only other damage I've found so far is a small dimple on the flaperon. It's very small, inside of the inborn hinge. Be o.k. I think.
In Barnstormers I did I saw a kit for $2K, damn I gave $3500! Here' pictures of what I have:

If you put your finger dead center on the map of Illinois, you'll be within 50mi of Shelbyville. Hey EDMO is there anyway I could get ahold of Dave0415. Griggsville is just west of Springfield. My oldest boy lives in Springfield. I'm thinkin' a trip to Griggsville would be a good one as I could stop 'n see the boy too! I did recover the fuselage and the tail feathers with Poly-Fiber on that Challenger, and it turned out pretty nice. The dope will make ya' goofy though!

I started Saturday movin' the kit home. Lo 'n behold I found the builder's manual and pull sheets! Oh happy days! Could y'all tell me if the engine mount that came for a 532 will work on a 582? When it comes to engine cowl, I prefer a more conventional one. A cowl like what you would find on a Cessna. There's an Avid on Barnstormers in NY that's fine lookin' plane. Of course it's a ways down the road, but I would consider some sort of swap for that round cowl. It's 3 piece: top, bottom and scoop.

    Howdy boys!
Wyatt here and I'd thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a divorced father of 3 grown boys, 60yr old retired plumber/pipefitter from Shelbyville, IL. Aviation was always a passion. Got my private ticket in '85, but quit flying in '98, accumulating 300hrs. Life can kinda get in the way. Last winter I picked up a basket case Challenger II that a couple of 'ol boys had bent, put 'er back to rights, and have been flying it since June. Love it, a good little airplane! I now have another project, an  '89 Avid Flyer kit. The deal was done Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas to me! I just purchased the airframe, as I would rather have a 582 than the included 532 on the nose. I hope to tap on the wealth of knowledge here to aid me in the build! I'll try not to be a pain, but I know there's gonna be questions. With a whole bunch of pieces and parts, and you guys, I'm gonna build an airplane! If anyone out there is close to Shelbyville , please let me know. Hell, I've never even seen an Avid up close!
Thanks a lot guys and look forward to it!
