  1. Today I balanced the rudder and epoxied 3 more false ribs on the other wing. A second coat of poly on the false ribs. My used engine also showed up!

  2. Thanks for the picture Ron. I have posted to the group for more information. I think the ribs will need glued on first, then the glass wrap. Just need to get the ribs fitted right. I thought you said this kit was easy? Ha! And also I love the detailed manual;))

  3. Hi guys,

My next step is to install my fuel tanks and ribs. I was doing some test fitting and studying the manual (which is way wrong) and my problem is that the ribs don't fit over the spar and fuel tank because of the lip on the fuel tank. I am lined up with depressions in the tank. Thanks in advance!

  4. Thanks Ron! Also, the ribs do not fit over the tank, the fiberglass is too wide for the rib.  I will post a picture of that soon, but it looks like the rib will need to be cut or the tank ground down (ikes) to make it fit?

  5. OK - Here is the scoop on some cheap, New, Hella, wing position lights:  I was able to grab a limited supply of these, and they are a bargain at $85 a set of 2 including shipping to U.S.A., but will ship overseas at your expense.                                                                                                             These are complete with the same 7512 bulbs that Grimes uses, but the bulbs are 24 volt.  I could have removed the bulbs and sold them, but will leave that up to you to do, as I don't have the time.  You can replace the bulbs with 12 volt bulbs, either the Grimes 7512-12 @ $16.45 on page 641 in new Spruce catalog, or you can buy the LED bulbs P/N 13-15810, page 622 @ $16.95 to save on power draw for 2-strokes, but IMO, the best is the LED strobe bulbs P/N 11-12193, page 626 @ $34.70, like AkFlyer, Leni, uses.                                                                                         These lights are brand new, and cheaper than any others, and compared to the Grimes light shown in my photo on the right, IMO, are a better design on the electrical part - They come with rubber boots to enclose the wires and contacts.  All have silver colored covers which contain the 3 mounting screws.  I only have a very limited number of these to sell, so if you want a set or two sets send me a check or money order with your address and also a PM to help me keep track.  You can click on the photo for a larger view.   ED ASHBY, 1796 ORCHARD DRIVE, ARNOLD, MO 63010-2424

Still have any of these Ed?

  6. Today I installed one set of false ribs on one wing where the tip tanks would have gone and prepped the second wing for the same in the morning. Installed the angle braces to the outer ribs. Studied the build manual and confused myself even more............Does anyone know if there is a "root rib" ?   The plans show it labeled as such, but I think they are talking about the trailing rib that goes on the rear spar and glues onto the fuel tank?  Any pictures anybody has of this area and time of their build is appreciated :)

  7. Got back to work on the Magnum today. I worked on fabricating the trim tab for the rudder. Seems that the Avid factory decided to weld mine solid to the rudder, so I had to cut it off and weld it to a piece of 3/8" square tubing that I had to special order from ACS.....then fabricate an adjustment tab for the tab and install the hinge.  After that (which took most of the day) I started working on the wings again.  I epoxied in the tubes that will hold the 6 false ribs where the tip tanks would have went. Tomorrow I hope to Hysol in the false ribs.

  8. BTW, fuel cost is the least expensive cost to flying, but gets the most attention because that is what we pull our wallets out for more often for;))

  9. All,

Gor the record, I will only be burning 100LL or 96 octane ethanol free Mogas. I have plenty of availability on both and no issues getting it in the future. I know different parts of the country have different available fuels. So, my post on ProSeal was just a thought to help whomever it could help. I have had plenty of experience with low octane ethanol fuel and have NO desire to use it in any aircraft in my future. So, my fiberglass tanks will be good to go!

  10. Yes, these are all fiberglass. What tank do you need? I will be selling my tip tanks, but they are 5 gallons.

  11. If you plan on using just the nose ribs in the old tip tank bay, I would suggest adding one more drag tube to that bay. That is what both Avid and Kitfox recommend when omitting a tank. The tanks do add some degree of structural integrity that is best replaced in some way.

Yep, I saw that in the plans, and thanks for reminding me!

  12. Well, I have been starting on the wings, I am waiting on my landing gear before I can get much further with the fuselage.  I have made the false ribs to go where the tip tanks would have went (previous owner was going to install) and I am waiting for my tubing to come in to finish that.  Going to take a break for a while, my daughter is getting married this weekend! All for now.

  13. Jim, that is exactly what I plan on doing. I just got home from a cabinet shop who gave me enough scrap to build the ribs.  Thanks!!

  14. The rest of the ribs are 12" on center. The 16" spacing is to fit the tip tank in. I think I will proceed with putting in the false ribs, way simpler. I'm not a structural engineer so I rely on other experienced builders advice ;))

  15. I wanted to put a full rib, the one that goes between the spars in. But after studying it more, I think I can just make some more nose rubs and put in and it will be fine. It is 16" between ribs out on the end. As long as it will be strong enough I'm okay with it. Any advise is welcomed.

  16. Hi guys,

I am going to eliminate the wing tip tanks on my wings, but to do this I need 2 more ribs. Any one got anything laying around that may work?

    Thanks Barry

  17. No, I didn't install a parking brake, and I may regret it later.  My plan is to keep this as simple as possible saving as much weight as possible. Hopefully I can find a couple big rocks wherever I land to use for wheel chocks !!!

    Cool parking brake though!

  18. Just out of curiosity, are you going to balance the rudder and elevators on your Magnum? My Avid has no provision for that....yours can easily accommodate counterweights

    Cheers, Laurent

Yes, in fact I did it last night! I used lead shot and silicone caulk.

  19. Thanks for the advise on the lead shot!  That is exactly what I used and mixed with 100% silicon and it worked great.  It took 2.2lbs to balance the elevator.
