Hahaha, honestly wish it was going quicker, missing some beautiful flying weather :(. Good news is welding is supposed to be coming up asap so then big strides can be made. On another note, got a package in today fresh from The Dominican Republic!! Going to uncrate it tomorrow morning and look it over, should be a bit higher performance than my avid with the 582 id imagine

I will be making an access hatch for the tailwheel, although I dont like screwing into fuselage tubes so will probably do it a different way.
Still waiting on welding so project has not been progressing that much. Spent a little time working on the wings. Reattached ribs with broken hysol bonds after chipping out the old (very carefully), cleaning the spar and applying new. Also got the rib tail braces on and repaired the broken tail.

Those look awesome Tjay, I'll definitely remove some material.
Only update is I cut out all my polycarbonate, test for my big 8" tailwheel, and found a kitfox 4-1200 elevator with trim tab locally that I'm picking up tomorrow. Woo hoo

Yes, the speed fairings have been fixed and will be going back on the plane after I get the lift struts touched up. Still waiting on welding so spent some time doing odd jobs that I can still work on before its welded up. Spent some time lightening gussets, still a few to do but removed the centers from them and should save a pound or more. Also cut balsa plugs for the ends of the flaperons and hysoled them in, will fill and sand smooth before paint. Bought a couple sheets of .060 makrolon and will be cutting myself a new windshield/ door windows today. steady progress. Also got my new wingtip lights in the mail, they look nice!

How can you tell the difference between the ethanol resistant and old non resistant tanks? The 6 and 13 gallon ones I pulled out of my model 3 were different colors, 13 gray 6 gallon black

WTB: right side wide gear for avid/ kitfox
Looking for a right side wide gear for an avid/ kitfox. Have an old left side wide gear from my mkiv avid and currently building a model 3 kitfox and would like to widen it up. Let me know if you know of anything, thanks!

that's a good idea, I'll do that . My plan is to attach them and use superfill to really streamline them to the struts, and paint them, no fabric covering. That's how my Mkiv was and looked much cleaner than these did covered in cloth. Will probably have to permanently mount my jury struts as well I suppose

GOOD IDEA! Does anyone have a right side wide gear for a kitfox/avid? I have a left side sitting here and would love to upgrade to the wide gear on the plane.
Spent some time with the table saw playing around with the old warped speed fairings, trimmed about 1/4" off of the front and put the blade at a 30 degree angle and cut a new larger pocket to allow the tube to nestle into it. Worked great and actually 3 of the 4 pieces are now pretty much straight. The 4th I wetted down and put it between 2 sawhorses with a 10 pound weight in the middle, hoping it dries straighter. Anyhow happy to have made progress on that front.

Alright well it seems unanimous, and I have a neighbor who has a wood shop in his basement so I will go confer with him this AM about fabbing up a new set of fairings for the lift struts. The powdercoat on them got damaged a bit so Im going to have them blasted and powdered before I put on the new struts anyhow, but Im sure him and I can make a set. Hopefully going to be getting this all welded up soon and then real progress can begin with covering the fuselage covering and bringing the panel/ landing gear/ lift struts/ wheels to the powdercoater so he can begin that.

Ok so what are my options here? According to the build manual the lift strut speed fairings were optional, was it the same strut whether or not you ordered the fairing option? I'm assuming it is, but want to be sure. If it's going to hurt my climb I will add it back on, but will have to buy new ones, I don't want to reattach the warped ones that came off and have the same issue when I'm all finished.

Spent a bit today cutting out balsa plugs for the ends of the ailerons and hysoled them in, will flatten them out and fill them tomorrow.

Started reattaching the wooden fairings and noticed that both of them  from the leading tubes were significantly warped. Also they were heavier than I thought as well so decided I'm going to go without them, just blast and powdercoat the struts and leave it at that. So spent awhile with the heat gun removing all the hysol that was on them to make blasting easier.

Edit: just weighed them and each piece is almost exactly 2lbs, times 4= 8 pounds plus probably .5 lb in Hysol and maybe .25 in body filler = 9 lbs off of the plane not using the speed fairings. Also decided Im going to just do the bottom of the plane in the medium fabric and the sides/ top/wings in lightweight, which should save ~3 lbs in fabric and a bit of weight in paint as well. Also pulled the Loran system and putting on much lighter NANCO tires, and will be removing the speed fairings from the gear as well. Not sure the what the weight penalty of the ULS with its high torque starter and slipper clutch is vs the old 912ul but hopefully the plane is equal to or lighter than it was when I started when its all done.

Spent today fighting a warp in my lift struts, they had a slight bend to them along their entire length that I could not get out until I finally removed the wooden speed fairings on the rear of them. As soon as the wood was removed they sprang back to straight, odd, Im thinking the builder had attached them with hysol in spots the length of the strut and the wood must have expanded forcing the tubes to arch away. Anyhow had to knock them all off, and am reattaching them with a solid line of hysol down the inside of the fairings. then going to fill with superfil and sand into a nice streamlined shape. pain in the butt!

Not much to update yesterday and today, weather has been cold and drizzly and I just didnt have it in me to go out to the barn and work :(. Good news is that starting tomorrow the weather looks great for the next week so hoping to make some meaningful progress. Decided Im going to clean up the lift strut fairings and fill them so that I can have them painted without wrapping them in fabric like what was on it to start with. Thats how my Avid was done and I thought it looked much cleaner. Also going to grab a couple sheets of 060 polycarbonate and cut a new windscreen and windows. I was considering upping the windscreen to 093 but with the undercambered wing not sure its worth the weight gain and increased likelihood of crazing seeing as it wont be cruising much over 85-90. Opinions? Cost difference is minimal just trying to make the best choice. May also get going on the rib tail repair although still waiting on my spruce order which has the plywood in it. Also been watching stewarts systems videos like crazy trying to get the technique mastered before even opening a container

May as well add them now, my avid mkiv with 1150 gross had them, as do some of the larger gross later model planes. Dholly has a strengthener for the lower spar carry through as well. For the tiny weight gain figured it's worth sticking them in there, factory must have had a reason to put them in right?

That's the plan, Shooting for June! Just got word the motor is roughly 2 weeks out. Any word on when your buddies are getting back from down south? Spent a couple more hours stripping powdercoat and it's just about ready for them now
also- just weighed all the gussets, under 4 pounds total and widebody kit is just over 2 lbs, so roughly 6 lbs added with all of the strengthening.

Hand washed these as well, they were pretty stained up and dingy but came back nicely!

ok, guess I will order another gallon of the green.
spent a couple hours making the last of the brackets, made the straps for the rudder pedals, and the gussets for the upper spar carry through tube. Made the ones for the spar carry through and engine mount out of thicker stock than all the rest. Just have to strip a bit more powdercoat and it will be ready for the metal melters to put it all together. Cannot wait to have this portion of the build behind me and move on to covering.

Spent this morning thoroughly spraying down the wings with enzymatic cleaner, and put a bunch in the spars and slowly spun the wing around to coat the entire inside, my wife was nice enough to help with this. the unfortunate incident that transpired while doing this is my thigh caught a rib tail and snapped it off. guess this is the best time to have that happen though as I will be installing all of the tail strengtheners and will reattach it at that point. Anything else I should do when reattaching it? was going to use Hysol to glue the butt ends together, then hysol on both sides sandwiched between the aluminum strengtheners, then rivet the strengtheners.
Also put in my full order for coverings through Wicks and got their 10% off, but ordered the uncertified medium fabric from Spruce, along with the whelen microburst wingtip lights, and a bunch of other smaller things (fuel line/ filters/cotterpins/ body filler etc etc….
One more question. I am going to go with a similar paint scheme as posted on page one, with light green being the main color and black being the scallops, I ordered 2 gallons of green and one gallon of black, in anyones experience is 3 gallons enough to do the whole plane?

DOH!! my wife heard some bad words slip out when I pulled this bonehead

My go to color scheme that Im trying to match

Really?!?! Cut these all to fit in the center, and used up most of my material doing so, and actually would have been much easier to do it your way. Worth redoing it all over again?

Is the medium the 2.7oz? I think thats what I will order. Didnt get that done today, on the list tomorrow. Also decided to stick with the light green and black color scheme I originally wanted.
Spent today doing more prep for the welders, removed more powdercoat, and cut and fit all the gussets for the frame. Also started test fitting the Murle Williams widebody. Not super impressed at what $250 bought me but we will see how it goes together when its time to weld.
Oh, and I also bought a couple bottles of an enzymatic Urine cleaner. Although I think I need a couple more. Tomorrow is supposed to be a cloudy rainy day so going to soak them and let them sit in the barn and slowly dry.
