    HI Leni:
Glad to hear you got it sorted out, but I really wanna know when you are going to get that horsepower barking artic cat sled motor horseshoed under the cowling and start really chewing some holes in that Alaska sky?!

Anazing! No rocks and no badger or gopher holes to swallow up a tire and tear off the landing gear.As a farmer that has to work as well as land around that crap,I am truly inpressed. And of course the flying is excellent as well. What is the elevation in that area?

I measured the front spar holes on my avid c hh, and the worst one is off centre .343, the other is .225.I didn't build the plane.Over 300 hrs flight time there has been no issues detected.the wings are supposed to be exactly 30.00 inches outside edge of spar to outside edge of spar according to my outdated assembly manual.Little bigger here a little shorter there, and this is the result.

    Here it is Leni:
People want to use the big fat mc5's that came with the later kits shipped, and I went with the mc4d ram for max performance reasons.I've never been exposed to the bigger dia.mc5.According to the matco site the mc5 is 1.813 in.in dia.which pencils out to a best leverage of 2.1 on the avid, if the ram is right tight to the back of the rudder pedal and stays there.I'm workin with around 3.5 and maxing line psi at over 600.

Nice pics Darcy, thanks for sharing! And you have absolutely no snow there. There is still a bit here at Swift Current, but man it looks from the pics that you have absolutely none nada.Unreal for the 7th of Jan.I tackled the air today as well.Started watching the oilers game, then when Eberlie got tangled up twisted his knee, and left the game I got pissed off ,unfolded the avid and went flying. The flight was fun, taxiing downhill on glare ice though had it's pucker moments.

  6. saskavid added a post in a topic Got the runs...

Well, if you have the latest manual with all the cartoons and avoid Airport Leroy's advice, then you are on the right track. For me the secret to spray;ing these coatings right was proper thinning of the coating for the prevailing air temp and doing the spraying in as low a humidity as pracitcal. With any of these poly fiber coatings, that first lite mist spray coat is the key to get subsiquent coats to stick and not run.Spray the first mist/presticker coat so that it is there but doesn't shine up.the time to spray next /final coat is very dependent on air temp.Manual says 15 min., this summerI was spraying at 7 to 10 min between mist/full coats, temps in mid 70's.Second coat I'd just spray on enough polybrush to get the shine showing.Any more you risk the runs again.Practice gun distance and rate of travel on some cardboard to get a handle on what your equipment is doing.Done right the final paint coat will feel just like glass.

Hang in there with it, follow the manual, it'll work.

Look in Joey's thread here for a pic of the unpainted pedals.
You get the left and right brake pedals for the left/pilots side and 4 bushings to insert into the ends of the rudder pedal to take out slack. If you want a price email me at lazysredangus@sasktel.net

What do you want to know? Build them in my spare time. takes around 10 hrs to complete a set.Lots of tedious lathe work.took about 200 hrs to design and develop the tooling to make it.Assemble/dissamemble with 2 screws. The last testing I did shows around a 50 percent improvement in line psi with the 2 piece pedal over leaving the pedal open ended.

You need the added rigidity of the 2 piece pedal if you are going to get the full benefit of the mc-4d ram swap.Read Joey's thread corner to corner...when it is done right the brakes are really strong/effective.

Read Joey's thread on his conversion from gocart to matco brakes.Full matco components,2 piece brake pedals(my design)Loads of stopping power.

I'll make it X3.You can do so much more with a tail dragger avid than if you tri it out.there is lots of stuff you can do to your plane to get better control of it...alter the tail wheel pivot bolt geometry;get your brakes up to snuff so you can directional control mostly with differential brake and leave the tail wheel out of the picture as much as possible on rollout.

    Hey Lenni:

Regarding the cat motor, something to think about if you are not already doin it.Rather than make a a whole new engine mount to accomodate the cat, it might be possible to use a dyna smoothe 582 that avid created at the last, , just reconfigure the aluminum channels that bolt to the motor and then in turn to the mount.have to really check it out but it might work and save some time...

Here is an informational pic I'll add to this thread, showing the 2 piece brake pedal and mc-4d brake ram being pressure tested on a test stand. Basically just a rudder bar bolted to a piece of osb. the guage in the pic reads to 600 psi and the guage needle is more or less pinned, using only single hand/thumb pressure.According to their website Matco brakes achieve rated torque at 450 psi with 600 psi being more or less an upper limit due to caliper and guide pin deflection and flexing at pressures above that value.
So in short the brakes on Joey's plane work because the 2 piece brake pedals and mc-4d brake rams deliver gobs of pressure to the calipers on demand whenever/where ever the pilot needs it.

The corman flyin is on my to do list of things that never seems to get done. And with the way the weather is arsing around again this year and getting me behind with seeding and other work.
That yellow avid belonged to my vet(cow doctor). Sold it a few years back.I lent him my promotional vids for the fox and avid and the next thing I know he had that plane. So where do you and your avid currently live?Would be nice to see a real deal avid 4 in the flesh.

    Thanks Leni!
Just rember when you do stick the mc-4d's on the plane to get the ram shaft right tight to the back of the rudder pedal....Your plane's rudder bars must have had that really narrow mc tab spacing. bummer.

Ok Gentleman here is a couple of pics of my plane, taken a while back when I flew into the local airport to do an altimeter adjustment.Got on the brakes good and hard to see I could stop on pavement.estimate my stopping distance at between 60/75 feet. Those matco brakes really can be made to work.

    HI Joey:
My sling seat is installed the same as yours was with the short part being what you sit on.Pretty sure they all are set up that way.Why not phone Dean and get it right from the man how the seat is supposed to be in the plane?

  24. saskavid added a post in a topic Beautiflul Fall flying days

    Hey Leni:
Great video! Still swearing at the brakes huh? That I've seen video of both yourself and Joey Myers doing loops on rough unimproved ground I'm going to make a comment about the steering and release mechanisms of matco tail wheels with compression springs.According to what I've read compression springs are supposed to be setup to provide lite tension loading on the rudder hinge bushings so they don't wear prematurely.Problem with this setup on a matco tail wheel is that the steering arms need to be under continuious spring tension in order to work properly. As the tail wheel spring compresses to obsorbe load the tension on the steering arm springs lessens and does dissappear alltogether. On rough ground the right combination of bounce giggle and gosel can let one of the seering arms get out of position and the tail wheel then comes unlocked. And you can then step on opposite rudder all you want to correct a swing caused by the tail wheel turning to the spot the steering arm is supposed to be, nothing happens, cause it's unlocked!
My answer to this was to run a lite tension spring up the center of the compression spring setup to keep the steering arms under continious tension no matter the load or articulation the tail wheel spring is at.I don't know if this is what happened to you or Joey but you are both running matco tail wheels. It happened to me once and adding the extra spring means it hasn't happend since.

  25. saskavid added a post in a topic Hacman Kit install

    Joey:
You end up swapping out the main jet to a 180 mainly because the static air source to the float bowls, used in conjunction with the hacman is decidedly more negative(more of a vaccumm) than it was originally. With the hac you are static sourcing at the air filter as opposed to originally under the carbs.
I am running a hac that I built to my own particular plane's needs; a model c with internal rad and the engine intake firewalled off from the rest of the cowling gives me a more posative intake pressure on the carbs than those fully cowled. Was running a 180 main before I ever installed the alt. compensation for that reason. Also that my air filtre is firewalled from the rest of the engine I chose to static source my hac setup from inside the cowling rather than outside thru the air filtre.the net result being I'm still able to run the 180 main.I know a lot of the working theory can sound like a lot of brain twisting gobeldy gook, but once it is on your plane up and working, it will do what you need it to.
