I've ran into this and it has to do with how the rudder bars are orientated .for my plane the rudder bars start paralell and the tops converge equal ammounts some people shift the tops forward compared to that and some have them pulled ahead or back towards the pilot. And that is were these length anomalies come into play I think.

Weather on the prairies north of the 49th has been so crappy these last 2 springs.More often than not I've managed to have my plane up and flying in mid to late march and now...May 4 and I haven't spun the prop yet?If it isn't cold and wet its cold and windy and that pattern is interrupted by typical bouts of cold and dry! cold cold cold !

I think grove specifies 600 psi for thier ratings read it somethere probably kitplanes.Matco ratings are derived at 450 psi. Like I have said in the past the mc-4d the mc-4a the mc-4 setup in an avid all have the same leverage at the start 5.3 to 1. You go with a really short master and an extended clevis you start at 4.7 to 1. typical leverage under activation with an mc-4d should be 3.6 to 1 depending on rudder bar orientation.Shortness of the ram plays a part in leverage but it is the perpendicular distance ratio between vectors that are the true determining factor of leverage.I actually picked this up myself and verifed it with the content of George Happ's troubleshooting page.If I didn't have the leverage I claimed there is no way I could make the 600 psi I have demomstriated on the test stand. And matco's trougleshooting pages state anything over 600 doesn't do anything more just twists/flexes the bottom end.

Ron with regards to toe brakes it is more a matter of mechanical reallity that no mechanical system is 100% effecient.Basic leverage mathmatics doesn't take this into account. The original hydraulic brakes on the non magnum avids were lacking in leverage and flimsy to the point of where you could pour as much leverage into the top end as yu wanted it wasn't going to turn into line psi just get obsorbed within the system.

this is a thread Joey did when he installed my 2 piece pedals , mc4d masters, and swapped out his cable bottom end to hydraulic.

I'm running quarter inch Joey is running 1/8 inch doesn't seem to make much if any difference..If you look at a cross section of 1/8 vs 1/4 and do an area ratio of the material wall to the orfice the fluid passes thru then in theory the 1/8 inch should be much stronger or rigid than the 1/4.My test stand does have the quarter inch line attaching the mc to the guage and it still allows me to wrap the 600 psi guage. One thing I've noticed wen it is 50 as opposed to 90 above, mucheasier to make pressure at lower temp.rigidity of the line does play a part in performance with temperature. Provided you don't have any air left in the system after the swapout from wheels to skis, then you should be at 600+ psi. You can't feed a matco or most any ac brake bottom end any more. With oversize tires it is real easy to over heat things in continued panic/ hard stops and the friction coeffecient goes to hell because you've cooked all the resisns out of the pad.

As far as the magnum top end of it's brake system goes, I've only studied it in pictures and from what I can see the brake pedals suffer from some of the same flaws as the smaller avids even though it is completely different in appearance.guys with mc-4d masters and the modified 2 piece pedal are able to make 600 psi, which in an ac setup is about all you want in most cases. But as Leni's current setup with 30 inch airstreaks shows there are limits to what a single piston internal caliper bottomend can do even with maxed psi.To my eye the magnum brke pedal would make 400 ish psi or less stock, with the leverage and flex issues I'm seeing though this is just a guess.Only way to really tell is to plumb a pressure guage onto the top end with the caliper out of the picture.

  8. saskavid added a post in a topic VG's on underside of HH wing

    Randy:
Always been meaning to try this but haven't done it to date.My thinking was to put them on the underside of the wing right at a hoiziontal tangent on the pipe/spar and only on the outside half of the wing from the lift strut attachment to the tip;the area most effected by the 2in. wing washout. It would be interesting to tuft the underside of the wing at mid point to see how much separation you are getting in cruise out at the last half of the wing now with the vg's installed.

I've always had a love affair with craigar ss rims.Had a jet black 65 fairlane 500 with those same rims and polished up on a cloudy day that baby turned heads!!  Seeing this mustang of yours makes me wanna get back at it but no time.

I've ordered a fair bit of steel from these guys over the years never recieved any of it bent or dented. One time I needed .028 wall thickness and they sent me a piece of .035 instead . Considering at the time the .028 was almost  triple the price of the .035 they heard about it and got  the .028 to my door no charge.

that's that crazy jetstream, knife edging up on top of you and letting cold air slide down over the rest of the continent. We were in the warm air for a bit but now it's gone for shit just like everywhere else.

  12. saskavid added a post in a topic Let's talk flaperon rigging

    Joey:
beyond the typical steps to setup and adjust the rigging I'd check 3 thing:
That your inboard and outboard flap attach brackets are at the exact 50 deg. as specified in the manual.
That your f7a's are exact mirror images of each other.I bolted mine together at the main pivot piont and found they weren't.
That the bell cranks on the ends of each flap are at the same angle when the flaps are at the same angle.

Been a while since I did this to my plane but the most critical part is to get the plane all leveled out and then to get the teeter tottter that the f7's bolt to absolutely level and keep it level.Always use a level in the same direction don't flip it end for end between checks or uses.

     My best guesses for success...

So how did the plane behave before you installed the modified bell cranks or did you not fly it with the old f7's?Knowing would be a helpfull reference to know what/where to start checking.

  14. saskavid added a post in a topic Finally a video

Nice to see can't belive how smooth the air is.Last 2 times I went turbulence beat me up pretty good.So from what I can see of it you have the 2 blade warp screwed back on the gear box.Give up on the ivo already?
    Glad you're back

    Dimi3:
One of the things I've noticed about this type of foam is  it takes a "set", that is it tends to compress  when under load over an extended period of time, get loose and permanently take on the shape of the gap it is filling. If it is the same insulation foam where you are as in my area. I'm playing with marine foam in the gaps as the seal, does a decent job. Working out some minor bugs.

  18. saskavid added a post in a topic Vortex Generators on the wing

One of the things having the largest effect on the performance of vg's on the wing is this  squared velocity physics rule, so the force or power of these vortexes being generated at these slow thirtyish landing speeds is very puny compared to planes at landing speeds in the 50/60ish range.Double or triple the vg count on the wing and you will probably double or triple the efect they are currently having.May still not be enough, could also produce a detremental drag condition, or screw up the planes handllling in other areas of flight performance.(Speculation)

    Nice looking Plane Mike!
What is your current cg?Before the first flight I'd check the landing gear and make sure it isn't toed in.Keep us posted...

  24. saskavid added a post in a topic Fookididdy FookFook that was an exciting landing!

Hmmm I'm thinking ther should be an overlay or a wrap welded at the point of and covering the breakage area, similar to the wrap on  the avid rudder bars.Wonder how many other mod 4 kitfoxes with E type brakes have had this happen?Thankfully nothing else was wrecked.

    Jack:
If I am remembering correctly, on my plane when I checked the brackets at the root and the tip were 50 deg. and all the ones in between were whereever they needed to be to get the flaps to work smoothly.
