  1. Now that's a serious radiator !

Yes, a big part of this project is documenting all the “parts” that are currently hanging off this airframe.    I’m a newb with the Avid  so once we a get a base for what has been installed we will have to answer the questions, What is it, why is it installed and is it appropriate.

I can start with the radiator.  Does it look unusually big/heavy/overkill?

  2. We needed a descent work surface at our bargain hangar as we begin our new project.  Got most of it done today.  The floor was old busted up asphalt, uneven and layers of dust and dirt.  We have a green house so I decided to do what we do for green house floors.  I added about 3 inches of limestone screenings, leveled, watered down and then covered with heavy duty landscape fabric.   The screenings firm up nice with moisture and gets almost hard as concrete.  It should provide a good firm, clean and level surface.   Have about $450 invested and the airport board covered $275 of that.

  3. Newbie question.  Do Avids tend to be built nose heavy or tail heavy?  I have not weighed ours yet so I’m just wondering what I can expect.

  4. I guess that’s what I’m getting at, that is I don’t have a specific list of specific parts I’m looking for.  We have just acquired the Avid project so as we begin work on it I will know more of what it needs.  I fly for a living and happen to be sitting in Orlando for a week or so.  I’m just reaching out to see if folks in the area might have something I might could use and no shipping required.  Thanks for the strut and squeezer info.

  5. What are you looking for ? I may have some stuff at my house or hanger . I'm in Zephyrhills

We have a C model that needs flaperon work, exhaust work, propeller, fabric repairs, vhf antenna, lift struts for doors, rivet squeezer,  etc.  .  Let me know what you have.  Thanks.

  6. I’m in Orlando this week and looking for Avid/Rotax 582/instruments/tools parts and pieces.  If you have something in one of those categories that you’re willing to part with please reply or send me a message.  Thanks!

  7. Thanks akfler!  You’re right about the cost for sure!  I think we will take a hard look at your suggestions and see if we can make some acceptable progress towards rebuilding.  I’ll post some progress pics when we get something done.

  8. The airplane comes with wind damage history.  While the main structures repairs look good the rest lacks finesse!

  9. It appears that I should have started with the question, "Were the Flaperons supplied fully assembled minus the balance".  Thanks to "nlappos" I found the build manual section that describes them.  I expected a nice diagram of assembly but found only info on trimming foam and adding the balance.  So... I have requested a quote from Avid Aircraft for new and will set about dis-assembly of the originals to get some ideas on a fabricating my own. I will try to get some pics posted on progress.

  10. Hey, I wasn't being critical, sorry if it came off that way. The MK IV Build manual is posted here http://www.avidfoxflyers.com/index.php?/topic/4220-avid-mk-iv-build-manual/

and if you download Section III, then look in section iii for Chapter 9, the flaperon build is described. But finding stuff in the build manual is a real pain, it took me a while to find it, and that is my manual posted there!

nlappos, Thank you for the guidance and thanks for the apology but none required.  I figured you were just stating a fact (as was I in my response) and I just don't get too worked up over forum stuff anymore.  I believe 99% of us that take the time to post and ask questions on forums sincerely want to help.  Your info on "where" and "how" to find the flaperon detail is really what I was after and is much appreciated, thanks!

  11. Did they use a foam core for the flaperons?  I suppose I can de-construct the current ones and find out how they were built.  Thanks.

The build manual says the flaperons are entirely foam filled, except where the hinges are installed. The build manual section III chapter 9 is pretty clear on this.

Well I don’t have the build manual and the build manual I see posted on this site  Does not seem to have that chapter.

  12. Taken from Rotax Ricks frequently asked questions page.  Hope it helps.....

"With the two fuel pumps in this system (one pulse and one electric), should they be installed in parallel or in series to the carburetors?  On your fuel system, the order of components should be: the flow out of the fuel tank, to a fuel filter, then the primer pickup line, the Fawcet fuel pump, then the pulse pump, then a fuel filter in each line from the pulse pump to the carburetor(s). You must use the 2 to 4 psi Fawcet fuel pump in your system. That, plus the pulse pump will provide 9 psi. The floats in your carburetor(s) will take that pressure without any problem. DO NOT run it parallel . Run in series with no bypass.  SIMPLE IS BEST."

  13. Thanks 1avidflyer.  I've got some ideas on construction method but I thought for sure the build manual would have some details.   I don't have any pics yet but I plan to post some of the airplane and it's needs soon.

The left flaperon was "repaired" with pop rivets and there are several stress cracks all over.  Both sides have lots of oil-canning going on.  In my opinion I don't think they can be rebuilt.

    2 questions:

What topic should I post under to get the best response for my flaperon questions?

Did they use a foam core for the flaperons?  I suppose I can de-construct the current ones and find out how they were built.  Thanks.

  14. I need to build new flaperons but Im not having much luck finding instructions/plans.  This is for a Model C with 30 foot wingspan.  We just acquired the airplane and it needs lots of TLC.  I have flown it several times but the current flaperons need to be replaced before further flight.  Looking for some guidance. Thanks!

  15. Hello from Kansas.  My son and I just acquired S/N 601 and its in need of some TLC.  I have flown it a bit and love it but it has suffered from neglect, mis-repairs, and a bit of abuse. Our plan is to right all the wrongs slowly but surely.   We have already replaced bungees, cleaned and repacked wheel bearings, cleaned up brakes and removed half a mile of unused wiring.  We need to build new flaperons and Im not seeing any pics or how-to's on this forum.  I'll post a query under the appropriate subject.  Looking forward to learning much from you all!
