  1. The back cylinder had 1 cooling port completely plugged. Im guessing that side of the cylinder over heated and siezed. It sat for 20 years with coolent in it and rusted the piston to the cylinder. Had to hammer the piston out of the cylinder, and still didnt get it out completely. I ended up pulling the wrist pin when it cleared the cylinder enough to slide out. The piston is still stuck in the cylinder.

The head gasket looked to be in place with no signs of coolent getting past it.  Im guessing the coolent came through a crack in the steel sleeve at one of the intake or exhaust ports? The powder and grit on the piston looks to be coolant that was ignited over and over in the combustion process?

The head of the cylinder stud bolt closes to the plugged coolent port was almost completely coroded.  I almost didn't get it loose.

This is definately something I've never seen before.

Here's the new Ryobi scope and images. $89 at home depot and uses my iPhone via wifi to view and save the images and video. The saved images kinda stink compared to what was displayed in the screen. I think a screen shot is the way to go rather than having the app save the image. I'm not sure how I feel about the set up. It's missing a small mirror for sure, but I think I will lrobably keep it for the new 670.

1 cylinder is perfect on my 582, the other....? I have no idea what the heck happened to the other.

  3. I'd be pretty pissed if I had that kind of wear in less than 100 hours. I'm going to venture a guess that Lucas oil is subpar. I can see why 2 strokes have a bad name in aviation.

I just pulled my 583 that was siezed after 20 hours on the hobbs. The previous owner went a little non standard with an Ellison throttle body carb and my guess is that he ran it lean in that time and blew it up. I just pulled jy motor yesterday to send it off to Rotax Rick for a 670 transformation. Your findings have made me curious and I'll run down to the Home Depot to see about buying that Ryobi scope.  I'll get some pics befor I send it off. I may even pull the cylinders today before I send it off.  What better way to learn than with an already messed up motor?

What brand scope is yours and what did it set you back. What scopes would you recommend?  Bang for the buck is my priority because ofhow little I'll use it.

  4. Let me see what I can do. I'll ask for all of my parts back from my 582 / 670 transformation. It may be a couple weeks and it will need to be honed. It only has 20 hours in it though.

  5. One port off the fiberglass rear cowl leads to the cab and the other goes to a carb heater box. If both the carb and cab heat is turned off there would be ZERO airflow through the right radiator.

What am I missing? Will the 582 run cool with only 1 free flowing radiator?

  6. 1/2 a cap full per 10 gallons. It makes the lead sludge softer and break up easier to be blown out the exhaust.

Anybody care to donthe math on what ration 1/2oz is in 10 gallons?

  7. I'm planning on running 100ll all the time with one of these additives. There is ZERO non ethinol fuel available in SoCal unlessnits VP race fuel. I have to protect my Glass tanks from melting away, so motor gas with  ethinol isnt an option.

  8. What brand 2 stoke oil are you using?

Are you running TCP additive to the 100LL to break down the lead particles and blow them out the exhaust.

I've love my Yamalube for decades in my water cooled motorcyles.  Its a clean burning 2 stroke oil.

Here's a 280 hour study and break down of the 532 aircooled Rotax using 2 different Penzoil 2 stroke oils.   I love the picture comparison and thurough test. Does any body have links to another test or have first hand tear down experience with other oils. Rotax Rick like the Amsoil 2stoke oil, but this study with 4 different oils including the Penzoil air cooled 2stroke oil has me leaning towards its use because of how clean the rings look.

  10. Does anybody have the MkIV speedwing rib design drawing or a spare actual rib?

I can send you one, but not right this second. I am rebuilding my wings, and need to decide what will and will not be re-used. Maybe a week or so.

You're the man. Is it the flat bottom rib or the under cut rib?

  11. I'm in the preliminary stages of getting wing extensions going for my MkIV Aerobatic SpeedWing.

Airdale has the long way around solution, real real ling way around, considering he is no longer actively partaking in his buisness or returning phone calls, so, I went out searching for a solution. His rib and spar e tension looks great, but covering them and trying to math the existing paint on my Avid doesnt sound like fun. I think a 1 piece carbon fiber wing extension is the quickes easiest soultion to extending my Aerobatic Speedwings. No paint matching, clearing them would look amazing and let the carbon fiber bling shine, and a quick insert and easy removal or swap out between speed wings and HH STOL wings would be a dream come true. I need some help though.

Having a CAD drawing of the MKIV  wing build would be enourmously helpful. I have this PDF and build sketch, but something more modern would get this project off the ground a bit easier

    1) Did anybody every go to the trouble of building the wings or extension in solid works?

    2) Do we as a community, have any better prints than the ones in this PDF?

    3) Can anybody tell me with confidence, what the spar ID and OD of the MkIV Speed wings is?

  12. That's the info I'm looking for. Be sure to check back and leave me a link to find your thread.

I notice the iPads work great so long as you can tilt them down instead of up. I use the iPhone 6+ in my trail car.  Pointed down, yet still viewable is the trick.
