    582 Exhaust
On my Skyraider the muffler exits out the side so it is exposed.I wanted to at least paint it but was wondering how hot the muffler itself gets.I know the Y pipe gets really hot but not sure how hot the muffler gets.Would engine paint work or does it need to be header paint.Engine paint says its good for 800 degrees and exhaust paint says its good for 1200.Engine paint looks nice and header paint looks like its already rusted. Thanks Randy

  2. horsepower added a post in a topic Happy Birthday HP

Hey Thanks,My wife ask me what I wanted to do today and I told her I wanted to work on my airplane.I finished putting in the windshield/turtledeck,what a bitch,it turned out pretty good but sure was alot of lttle cuts to get there. Now Im in my basement waiting for some of the Stewarts glue to dry so I can finish up one of my flaps.I think the bird is about 90 percent finished with about 90 percent left to go.Thanks Randy

Thanks alot Lenny,I will document all of the info I can.Not really sure if the DAR is going to require me to know this but I want to be ready.I will need it sooner or later.I still have to paint cowling, flaps and ailerons and then just go over everything with a fine tooth comb.Im going to tear down engine and inspect and reseal but I think I,ll waint until everything is finished.I did a rough weigh in and its seems to be a lot heavier than Skyraider advertises. They claim it weighs 450but mine will be closer to 500.May just be a taxi queen but I will find out. Thanks Randy

    582 Info
Im getting my Skyraider build close enough to start thinking about some engine data. Was wondering what RPMs you do a mag check at on a 582 and what RPM loss do you have for each mag drop? Also what RPM am I shooting for on a static runup to get my prop at the right setting? My prop is a 68 inch 3 blade Powerfin and gearbox is a 3 to 1 C box.Can you get any EGT info from a static run up or is that something that has to be done in flight. We are at 2150 field elevation. Sorry for all the questions but Im getting excited as hell,Im looking for first flight by spring so I just want to have all my ducks in a row. Thanks Randy

You could tear it down and inspect it and if everything looks good just put new seals and maybe rings.I would be afraid to run it much with the front seal leaking. That could cause a lean condition and then you would be out a whole rebuild.I do think the 300 hours is a major overkill but 2 strokes cant have a pressure leak. Good Luck Randy

Hell Yes,The more info the better.Thats what I like about this forum, you learn from your own and everybody elses mistakes and can collect a wealth of information. The builders manuals are not worth much so its all up to what ever we can find out from other builders.Good luck on your project. 8. horsepower added a post in a topic Fuel Leak

We were kind of thinking the same way, dont want to take any chances. Its the brass fitting that is cracked right near the carb. You need a magnifying glass to see it but its there.I hooked up a outboard fuel tank and when I squeezed the primer bulb it would finely spray out the crack. Leni,is it possible to tap out the carb for 1/8 inch pipe thread or should a guy just change the carb.Seems there must be a way to change the nipple, but dont want to comprimise safety. Thanks Randy

    Fuel Leak
My brother-in-law has a Bing 54 carb that is leaking at the fuel line connection. We found a small crack at the base of fitting. Is there a fix for this,it looks like the fitting is pressed into carb body and not threaded. Not sure if there is some epoxy to cure the problem or is there too much vibration. Thanks Randy

Sounds like I will run them a little on the tighter side as I think my brakes are going to suck. That will probably be my next big investment, good brakes, although Leni I liked your video, thats one of my better landings..........

    Tailwheel Tension Springs
Not sure how much tension you are supposed to have on the tailwheel springs.Where I have them now there is a little slack to where the wheel does not turn imediately when the rudder starts to turn.If I tighten one more link then you get quite a bit of tension on rudder pedals before the rudder comes up against the stops.Dont know if these pics will show anything but this is the set up I have. Thanks Randy

    Mechanical Brakes
I have mechanical brakes on my Skyraider that Im building, wish I had hydraulics but its not in the budget right now, maybe later. You have to push them down a long ways before they seem to hold is this normal? I dont have it running yet but just someone pushing me in the shop you have to lay on them pretty hard.I would bet that they will slow you down but might not have much emergency stopping if you needed it.If there is a better shoe to get I would be able to do something like that for now or is this just how they are. Thanks Randy

Good one, you got me on that one. I didnt even realize that you had it on the jokester forum I just opened it from new topics.I would show my wife that one but she might not think it was as funny as I did.Im off to elk hunting for a few days when I get back its thrash time on the Skyraider.Randy

    Fuel Pressure Regulator
Im putting a 582 gray head motor in my Skyraider that Im building.I was wondering if you guys run fuel pressure regulators.I have the stock dual pump plus I have a backup electric pump just for priming or emergency purposes. It is supposed to put out 2 to 4 PSI.I have it plumbed through a shut off valve and it goes around the diaphram pump and not through it.Thanks Randy

  21. horsepower added a post in a topic Tail Wheel

Your right Joey,I dont have 1 to 1 ratio, the rudder moves more than the tailwheel so dont have a clue what I want until I try it.Ive got my takeoffs in the Vagabond down a little better so when the time comes I,ll see what happens.I used to think some of the tailwheel pilots around here were on some kind of an ego trip but now I think they earned it.Man it didnt come as easy as I thought.Randy

I talked to George at Matco today and he said I should definately try it first before making any changes so I will give it a try. Thanks Randy

    Tail Wheel
Im sure there is already a bunch of info on this forum on this topic, but since we are on tailwheel stuff I will ask a dumb question.I have a Matco 6 inch tailwheel on my Skyraider build I read somewhere that the wheel does not break away until 40 degrees of travel.I check my rudder and it only travels 35 degrees before it hits the stops,I saw that they make some levers for a 25 degree release,is this what I need? By the way nice video Leni, looks like a fun place to fly. Randy

    Aftermarket seal kits
Im getting ready to tear down my 582 and inspect it,it has set for about 5 years with only 120 hours on it, I was just going to reseal it if everything else looks good.Has anyone ever used the aftermarket gasket and seal kits that are on Ebay or should I stick with just the OEM stuff? Thanks Randy

I just painted my Skyraider and it took about what Lenny said,I used the Stewart Systems but it still takes about the same total of product.Definately use white for a base coat,I used the grey fillerand my Royal Blue looks purple in the sunlight and the yellow stripes look gold.It looks ok but not what I had imagined. If you go on Kitfox website they have a material list for a covering job,it is in their parts catalog.Good Luck Randy
