Awww didn't know that tidbit Bryce...you have the best of both worlds then! Makes you wonder how many people are out there are flying with low rpms. I see most guys with a 912 have the Rotax tach. Wonder if it's more accurate.

Awesome Bryce! 6800 is too much though your going to kill your cruise. 582 makes her peak HP at 6500 and peak torque at 6000. Anything more your just decreasing the life of your engine and burning more fuel. I turn right around 6300 on takeoff which is in the middle obviously.I found that RPM to be the best compromise between climb and cruise for my set up. My needle tach is coming out of my plane on Wednesday when I go out to tinker on it. I'm just going to put a piece of painted aluminum behind it for now till I find something that's actually useful to take up panel space.

    Needle Tach For Sale!
Building on Joey's "needle tachs suck" post, I'm offering for sale my westach in case anyone wants to deprive themselves of some horsepower

After flying this plane for 3-4 yrs. and reading Joey's post, I started wondering how far off that old tach could be. So i invested a wapping $60, ordered a tiny tach, and installed it in about 15 minutes. The results below speak for themselves!

    My Original Take off RPM

My Newly Adjusted Take off Rpm

Sorry for the crappy camera work, I was trying to fly and contain my excitement! Holy SH!t, it's a totally different bird!

    Thanks guys!

Thanks for that offer. I had considered making a tank, but have no experience with that kind of fabrication, to assure proper shape and no leaks. If a tank does not become available ready-made, I may get back to you.
My interest is in a high endurance capability when solo. Easy to deal with bladder capacity that way.

Back in my Army days, we had a chance to learn how to load a C5 with dump trucks and semi tractor trailers, they only worried about the weight front to back not side to side, I think that the ailerons would cover that amount of roll. You may be down to building your own tank, use a epoxy resin that will withstand alcohol even if you don't plan to burn any, you can make a mold out of styrofoam build the bottom and sides to shape and remove the foam, put ribs in where they would normally go and lay the top on with precured glass then glass in the edges. If that is more than you want to do I am sure someone could do it for you. I would do it but you would have to supply the rib shape and materials. You would also need one heck of a bladder to make use of 36 gallons of fuel.

Not available from Airdale. Anyone with a 2-tank kit that is not going to use both, or changing from Speedwing to STOL or HH wings? Thanks.

At least you ditched the snowmobile motor...

If you play with the pitch on the prop you can get a 120 mph cruse at the expense of the STOL performance. (That's how mine was pitched initially.) Now I get a "high" (5500) cruise of 105-110 and "normal" (5000) cruise of 95-100.

I still may ditch that heavy pos warp for Smitty's IVO to try...

Well had you stuck around a bit longer I would have taken one. Honestly, rushing away to your own 'surprise' B'day party with your g'kids and all, I just don't know if you have your priorities straight.
    Joking!!

In any event, was nice of you to drop by and lend a hand stripping the KF-III. It was dark and starting to rain before I finally made enough room and got the new one tucked inside!

    Jack-

This prop is 70" and the log shows it's good for 100mph+ IAS at 5500rpm. Somewhere I read it may be the best non-IFA prop for the 912ul if you float your plane, that would be a nice bonus for me. The panel is ok, set up for stack trays and has a Narco 810+ with built-in intercom. Will be nice not to have to use an old handheld radio and portable intercom. One thing I really like is that the builder cut the panel down and also installed an in-panel compass for better viability. I always felt the model 4 panels were waaay to high, and visibility is already an issue on a TD w/ the round cowl. I can post a crappy phone pic.

And yes that was a gorgeous trailer, brand new custom made aluminum deck-over tandem axle that cost the fellow well north of $15k +tax. But as a Kitfox hauler, I have to say it SUCKED!! The lights were moved from the sides to the top for maximum door width but the rear ramp latches were left on the side post which left -maybe- about 1/2" clearance on each side as the plane was winched thru. And that was after un-doing the wing stay brackets and squeezing the wings together. wtf?! Definitely not a one man job and IMHO, somebody dropped the design ball big time. Moving the latches up just 10" would have made all the difference. As it was, the owner's grandson damaged the LE of the left wing when loading it up. Thank goodness for the PVC LE extrusion which prevented damage to the spar itself, but now I got some extra repair work in the bargain grrrr.

Nice. Did it come with the mobile hanger? The taper tip warp has intrigued me for some time. What length are the blades? I wonder what the performance difference is between them and the square tip? Watch out for the distraction factor, you'll really have a hard time getting back to the Avid +. Pretty nice panel? All the best.

    Mike,
Take one of those small 6" long bungee cords that they sell in the camping section at Walmart. Tie two knots in the middle with about an inch apart. Put 3 zip ties around your stick about 1" apart with the buckle facing toward the front of your plane. Hook the bungee on the cross member. You can move the bungee up and down the stick on your zip ties for more or less tension. I've been using this technique for 200 hours and it's very effective and incredibly simple. I have my flaperons rigged so that I'm almost hands off at cruise but any reduction in power causes mine to head for the earth too. The bungee works great to make up for this.

After reading this post, i think i'm suffering the same problem by relying on a westach. So i ordered a tiny tach. The unit isn't here yet, but i was reading the online instructions http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/pdf/Tiny_2A_Instructions.pdf
and was wondering how many sparks per revolution, and i think it's 4 on a 582 grayhead. Is that correct? Thanks, Bryce

    Hi all,

I have been meaning to post, but havent had a chance. My Avid is a little heavy and near the forward CG limit when I fly. (this is according to the C.G. data that came with the plane, but I haven't personally weighed the A/C to find out if the numbers are right) I have looked behind with the door off while flying and can see that the elevator it deflected up a few degrees when flying level. Also I have to hold a tiny bit of back pressure on the stick, and if I let go it starts a very gentle dive. (no pitch trim installed, trim tab only) All of this seems consistent with a nose heavy plane. I added five pounds to the tail but after calculations, it showed that it only makes roughly 1 inch of CG difference. Right now its about 12.5 inches aft datum when flying. I was suprised that the weight seemed to have almost no effect on the flying characteristics or trim. I don't seem to "run out" of elevator when landing, or have any real controllability problems, Otherwise it seems to fly really well. (I have noticed at lower speeds when I pull flaps in I need significantly more back pressure on the stick, which is a bit awkward. I end up landing zero flaps) Im just concerned about getting the trim well balanced. Also its nice not to have to hold back pressure for long periods of time. The more weight I add the lower my useful load, so I was thinking about adding the VGs to my horizontal to see if that helps. Seems like this might provide more total downforce at high elevator deflections, but nearly nothing for cruise trim? I guess nothing will actually correct it but adding more weight to the tail, but that will start to cut into my ability to carry a passenger. Just curious about your thoughts and observations from the work you have all done so far. What normal cg range is are all of your planes when loaded for flight? If I add pitch trim, how do you all have the control set up in the cockpit for simplicity and where did you find room for it?

    Thanks in advance

I think my airspeed is very accurate because when I bought it the static source was the cockpit. I found that the air disturbances around the cockpit gave innacurate airspeed indications due to venturi effect around the cockpit giving an atrificially high pitot to static comparison. .01 PSI is equal to 60 MPH of airspeed indication (thats right .01!) So I added a pitot static mast in the original pitot location so the pitot static comparison is taken at the exact sxame location. There should be no total dynamic pressure variations at different locations since they are one and the same now. It is a bit difficult to fully stall (which adds fuel to the nose heavy scenario) but when I stall its around 35 MPH indicated.

Im really happy with my Avid so far and have been having lots of fun. Looking forward to your inputs.

    Mike
