Engine placement

Generally, when people pioneer new engines such as the yamaha engines, do people design motormounts and decide engine placement to fit the cowling or do people generally build motor mounts and engine placement to get the cg correct then modify their cowlings? Asking for a friend

In a battle between engine and cowl, the cowl comes in second place...  Maybe the new engine is longer then the  old engine it replaced, or the the prop flange is located higher or lower.  in either case, the cowl isn't going to work.  The engine is the heaviest single piece in the plane, so it's vital that it's mounted in the best position possible.  Cowls or anything else need to be modified to fit the engine.  JImChuk
