Rotax 582 surging problem

5 posts in this topic

Increasing the revs on my 582 to about 4100 all is normal, leaving the throttle set at 4100 for a few seconds and then the revs will surge to 5000+ with no further throttle movement. It's a bit disconcerting, any ideas?

Before I noticed this I had just moved the needles to the lower notch to reduce the temperatures a bit and then re-synchronised the carbs.

Have you experienced this while flying? If so, did your airspeed increase as well?

No not flown it yet.

I am wondering if a slightly bent needle could be causing it?

Could be you are one the edge of being "on the pipe" at 4100.  The exhaust is a tuned pipe and is tuned for a certain optimal RPM range. Once in that range the engine breathes better. If 4100 is just below the range where the pipe is starting to make it breath significantly better then it could increase a bit.
