Magnum First Flight

Well, I was able to fly the Magnum for the first time this morning. It was a perfect day with clear skies and calm winds. The Magnum jumped off the runway much quicker than I was expecting and I found a heavy left wing right after lift off. The Magnum was at pattern altitude before I made midfield and and I ran the engine at 2600 RPM for a lot of the flight of over an hour. It took a lot of getting used to going so slow and learning it's handling characteristics. All engine parameters were within specs and there was no issues with the tail rigging or rudder. Elevator trim was also set very good. I was very happy with the way the tail flies with no weird yawing and plenty of rudder authority.

I saw right at 98 MPH indicated at 9000 ft, which is fine with the 26" ABW . This is not built for speed!

I have a list of little issues to work out, but overall, it was a fun flight and the visibility was fantastic. It was the slowest flying plane I have ever been in, but really fun.

Fantastic Barry!  Double check the washout for that heavy wing, that is what we find most often with the Super Cubs.

Very good news. Congratulations Barry. It's been fun watching this come together. You do great work. Would love to see some final pictures of the plane setting out on the runway. I need more planeporn pics for my work computer :)

Hi Barry, Congratulations! Pretty impressive isn't it? :-)

The heavy wing is most likely due to flapperons being reflexed. if you apply some flaps and the heavy wing goes away or decreases a lot, change your "0" flap setting to a little more flap engaged. it might be an optical illusion that the flaps look level, but might be reflexed in the relative wind. Hope that made sense. Once you are sure the flaps are neutral or maybe a tiny bit engaged (not reflexed), set the plane for level hands off flight with the heim on the wing. Then you can move on to setting up the shim on the horiz stab.

This must be so exciting!

Chris,

Thanks for the advice, I will be double checking all my settings with the angle finder, making small adjustments and try to sneak up on it! I will post after that and next flight.

Barry
