Wing tank question

I’m not even ready to start on them yet, but when I went to go hang these up I’m curious. One wing has the filler neck in the second bay....one wing has the filler neck in the 1st bay with a square cut out. Anyone know what the builder had in mind?

If the open area is sealed off from the tank it'self, maybe a wing locker?  Just a guess.  JImChuk

That would be the animal!  At least for small baggies.

I have already seen this (on a speedwing). Half of the left wing tank was used a storage compartment for fueling tube, fuel tester, a rag to wipe off after fueling etc. -  i.e. stuff that don't smell that good and you don't want in the cabin... I think I'd rather have the extra fuel capacity.

Ditto Fred, but looks like it’s the tanknover the left seat so that helps a little with balance, and I don’t know if the juice is worth the squeeze to fix it. Redoing tanks can easily turn a weekend job into a 3 month rebuild

With the normal rear luggage compartment and the optional hanging bag that hangs behing the pilot/passenger I find there is planty of storage without cutting into the tanks.

I can carry enough camping equipment ad clothing to last for two weeks on my Idaho trips.
