Who will be at Airventure this year? Doug and Larry, fish fry Tuesday night at our camp or anybody else that is camping by the ultralight field.

Now that sounds like a thing to put on the calendar!

Flapperon Party at my campsite Friday at 5pm.  Burgers and stuff on the grill.

I'll be there all week.  I'll be in general camping, somewhere in a 24 hour generator section.  3 day trip from Florida.  The 6 hour drive from Illinois is the ONLY thing I miss about Illinois!

Looking like I'll be there all week, camping Relleumtdats. I'm already booked for Monday and Tuesday nights. Just too much fun to be had, can't squeeze it all in!

I'll have my SkyRaider II 424MG camped near the UL Red Barn again. Arriving Mon-Wed depending on when the MN tailwind comes.  I won't be hauling a grill but stop by anyway :)

Tough to post while you're at the show, so many things to do and Wi-Fi is spotty at best in the ultralight and So40 camping areas. Here's a few pics from my phone...

Lots of stuff on the Museum lawn this year:

Wing folding mechanism on Stitts Playmate. Local guy had one and it always fascinated me.

IMG_4915.thumb.JPG.d41b2de8b97c4edf852d5

Early Aeronca guppy nose, note the streamlining attempts lol.

IMG_4916.thumb.JPG.efbd9f04619bac33ef7fb

Take Me Home Huey:  Dedicated to the Americans that served in Vietnam and never received a welcome home. Text HUEY to 56512 for a self-guided mobile tour.

This sleek little pusher had retractable gear and long legs to clear the prop and inverted tail. I'm thinking an inadvertent gear up landing in this one would be a very bad thing.

Not sure what plane this was but It reminded me of a recent thread discussion on hidden cowl pins. We've come a long way baby!

The 2017 EAA Sweepstakes RV12 is sweet, but I'm gonna win this AOPA Sweepstakes Super Cub Amphib.

I put my KF3 head rack in the Aeromart but got no takers. Someone got a decent deal on these skis.

Gold Lindy for light sport home built went to Mike Kraus' gorgeous radial KF.

If you zoom and look carefully, the first plane in the left row is a scratch built TravelAire replica built by a couple friends who flew off the 40hr on the way to OSH from NY. Won an Outstanding Workmanship Award.

Speaking of biplanes, the Jack Links Jet Waco is waaay cool, talk about ramp presence!

IMG_4924.thumb.JPG.901231f65be10c31c5c49

Of course the Blue Angels were awesome as always.

The Twilight Airshows off the UL field after the STOL cowboys were great this year, including led lit power parachutes running thru pylons and my favorite, the new RC extreme aerobatics routines. The 17-yo pilot is one of the top 3-D pilots in the world and how he can throw that 120cc 106" wingspan Edge540 into such combinations of unstable attitudes and recover perfectly every time -in the dark at night!- is simply amazing. Such skill, I was so mesmerized I didn't get pics. I'm sure there are videos online, read more HERE

The tradition continues, always room for some fried lobster with friends!

For the Heavy Metal fans, gotta love the "Bone" B-1 Lancer Bomber.

And what a sight to see the only two flying B29 Superfortress bombers, FiFi and the recently restored Doc, finally performing together.

I always liked the Corsair wings and caught this guy returning from the airshow.

Here's a few of the more unique items I snapped...

Some unusual spring gear.

If you ever wondered why Amazon Prime membership cost increased, here is Jeff Bezos' (Amazon founder) Blue Origin vertical takeoff/landing rocket booster and space capsule. This is the first booster repeatedly launched and returned to earth landing upright on a pad, a new 3-stage booster sporting 10x the thrust is currently being tested. Tickets are available thru Amazon.com if you got big balls.

I immediately thought of Joey when I saw this sign. He might like a transfer to this Unit. Zoom in on it and you will see it says 'Brew City Tankers'.

Name this plane. It's owned by a friend and always receives mega attention. Features a unique, moveable, high lift nose mounted canard that moves with elevator, horizontal stab that moves with flaps, full span double slotted flaps and wing spoilers connected to ailerons to assist in roll control and slow flight stability. At the time it was considered the only safe STOL plane ever built. A similar modification was still being built very recently.

Here's the 'For Sale' boards at OSH. You can find almost anything and everything here, trust me.  If you haven't gone to AirVenture, just do it!

IMG_5063.thumb.JPG.ba4630db4c47199f8a3c7

Another OSH tradition at my camp, 3 maybe 4 years in a row now... how many commercial and seaplane pilots does it take to put a rental car in a ditch? Notice the warning tape that, naturally, was dismissed like a defective gear warning light on their jets lol.

Thanks Jim,

That customized 182 that Doug photographed looks like the optimum STOL plane.  The only fault I can see is that he didn't use an earlier model for the basic plane.  That swept vertical tail really looks fast and cool, but Cessna only used that as a"Selling Design" - From what I have read, the old straight tail was more efficient than the swept style.  DMO

I remember my dad was looking to add a STOL airplane to his business in the 70's after he sold his Bell 47. The Wren folks came to our airport to demo the 460. Ultimately my dad ended up leasing a Helio Courier. It probably helped that the Helio was built 60 miles away in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was impressed with the Wren but didn't want to deal with the nose gear in rough operations. The Helio was just plain badass.
