  1. Just got approved by the moderators so here’s my intro!
I'm recently retired and in the process of earning my PPL. I actually flew as a teenager (soloed at 16) but never got my ticket. It’s nice to finally have the free time needed. Eventually I’d like to buy an aircraft but may go Light Sport or ultralight, not sure. One thing I REALLY like are amphibians! I live near the Chesapeake Bay and have enjoyed boating it for many years.
Looking around, I’ve discovered a few prospects, including the SeaRey, Icon (both$$$$), Adventura, Challenger (w/ floats) Excalibur, etc. BUT the Avid Catalina looks very interesting. I wish they were still manufacturing kits but that’s the way it goes. I realize to land on water another rating is required but that won’t stop me from buying one and using it at the airport until the rating is obtained. My flying will consist of local flights with the longest being maybe 150 miles to visit family, so I’d be content with a slower plane, but it must be 2 place for my princess!

  3. Hey Avid flyers,
A friend and I picked up an Avid amphibian from a lady on the coast in Florida whose uncle had a very, very unfinished project.  He and I don't have time for it at the moment, and we kinda prefer trike planes    (We bought the plane because she wouldn't just sell us the BMW1200R engine that came with it)
As you can see from the pictures there isn't much there, BUT!  it did come with the airworthiness certificate and old logs.
The frame appears to be pretty straight, but has been sitting outside in Florida near the coast.  There's rust on the fuselage and corrosion on the wing spar tubes.  My opinion is that the fuselage, struts, and elevator frame are useable, but the wings are trash, or at lease I wouldn't trust them for long, so it's probably not worth it - your call.  I'll provide closeups upon request.  I've taken an icepick to a few of the rust welds and haven't been able to poke it through the welds or surrounding tubing.  I'd fly it.... after a lot of work.
We're selling this airworthiness certificate and any of the parts of the plane you want.  Under 14 CFR section 21.179 you can transfer this cert to a similar design.  If you want to get into this as a project I downloaded and printed the Amphib build manual, which I'll provide.  It seems detailed enough if you have the skills needed to build from scratch.

    Asking $1,700.  Negotiable.
Now located in Bassville Park, FL.  Will deliver for free if local, and we can work out what delivery is worth if you aren't.

  5. There's an Avid Amphibian (N434YD) that the owner/builder might be willing to sell in Michigan. This is not his first build, or second, or..  Airworthiness issued in 2015, no damage history.  Builder logs are available. Set up with steam gauges and an EIS, 43 hours TTAF, 106 hours on the Rotax 912 (100hp).  Too many builds in the hangars, and all but this one now have Lycomings. (several kitfox, and the current amphibians are on pontoons).
IVO (medium) propeller, he has the hardware to convert it to in-flight adjustable, but built it to light sport specs, and registered it as a 2 seater (as I did on mine).  783 empty, Stainless steel header, custom paint, 29 gallons (center tank and 1 wing tank) total fuel capacity. No trailer included, but might be flexible in meeting partway?
    Some pictures attached.
Any idea what a reasonable value might be?

  6. For the folks up north, this looks interesting- two wing tanks, not enough info on the rest of the project.  I already have an inquiry in on the tailwheel installation. From the bones, it's a catalina, not an amphibian, If someone contacts/buys the project, I'd be interested in the serial number- I've tried to keep track of the cats.

  10. Hello everyone!
I have bought a partially assembled kit (really mostly done) and have a few questions. What is the difference between the Avid Amphibian and the "Catalina". I have literature that iilustrates the "amphibian" as having no wing floats but downward canted wingtips. Also, it features a "squareish tail".
My plane however, has "normal" wings (and wing tips) wing mounted "floats" but does not have the rounded, elephant ear like tail and rudder.... (I say this with the utmost respect! Love the "antique" look)
Any other significant differences? Mine has three fuel tanks, two of 14 gallons in the wings and a central one of 17. (wing tanks not yet plumbed). Manual comes with a bunch of wing drawings, of which I have identified a "speed" wing and a Heavy Hauler. I do not know which one I have!!
Please advise, enlighten, illustrate and share.
