Hi Jim, yes that is exactly what is going on. One wing is in front of the other.

    KitFox II Wings
I have a question for the Kitfox guys. I'm helping a friend put together a Model 2. This project sat for maybe 20 years. The wings are mostly completed and not covered. We bolted the wings onto the fuselage today and attached the lift struts. There is a 1 5/8 difference from the wing tips to the rear of the fuselage. We used the builders manual to reference the measuring points. The fuselage looks straight. Any ideas would be appeciated.
    Thanks, Keith

Silicone brake fluid is approved by Matco for their brakes. It's also cheaper than the Mil Spec stuff.

It's been a while since I posted the Avid progress. The Randy Moore gear legs are installed and look awesome! The Desser 27.5x10x8 tires are just huge and look very aggressive! I fabricated another clamp for the dual tailwheel springs. They were 1 1/4 wide so I had to fit a u shaped spacer. I may have to adjust the bend in the springs for a proper angle for the tailwheel. I noticed the the holes on the bottom of the rudder horn are  elongated from the tailwheel springs. Something else to fix! I still need to finish the brake lines and bleed the system. I will be using silicone brake fluid as it is available here at NAPA. The engine installation is all but done. Just waiting on some more fire sleeve and final look over.

In Alaska we still have more freedom than the lower 48 states. I can land most anywhere I want to.

Hi TJ, Your right, that bolt will probably last for many years. The big issue for me was the rust that was happening there. This Avid will be on floats here in Southeast Alaska. Landing in the ocean.  I'm sure that area will be subjected to Salt water dousing on a regular basis. I need to be able to inspect that area every year at Annual.

I don't understand why anybody would weld this bolt in. If it is a known rust prone area the bolt should be removed periodically and greased up. Also, an inspection ring should be installed to clean it out on occasion. My Avid has a small uncovered area underneath and right in front of the U channel to get a wrench on the top of the bolt.

Here is the only rusty area on this Avid. I am surprised to see no way for water to drain out of this area. In cleaning the mold and Croil out, I saw that water would pool here. No wonder it's rusty!  There should be a drain hole there. I'm not sure how that can be done. Maybe a small hole thru the springs and U channel?

I finally got the bolt out. It was just rust seized in. Air Hammer, Croil, breaker bar, hole cut in fabric to get at it and plenty of cussing! It only took 2 days to remove it. I'll send a picture tomorrow.

I did not get the tailwheel installed today. The Bolt going up into the fuselage is seized in place.  I tried to turn it with a nut from the bottom and just galled the threads up. I also tried my trusty air hammer to no effect. The bolt is too short for the 2 leaf spring. It has to come out. I soaked it with Croil and  will try again tomorrow.

I am going to install the new tailwheel today. I have an 8 inch Matco wide unit. I am not sure about the springs. I have a set of J3 cub springs that I will try to use. 3 leaf where the original on my Avid is only one leaf. Someday I will try to build a composite spring to save some weight.

I finally got my radiator hoses installed. It's full of antifreeze and no leaking,,, yet. Gear box lube and oil for the RV is in. Just waiting on a couple of fuel fittings to finish the engine install. I still have to do the lip on the lower cowling, and the Randy Moore gear legs. One thing that bit me in the wallet was the dead ELT. Corroded out, nothing $750 dollars can't cure! Well, it is the new fancy 460 millihertz one.

Wow! I finally got the brackets made and the radiator hung. It took some doing, now it all fits under the cowl. A much cleaner installation than hanging under the belly.
