  1. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic new rudder springs

Sorry Tommy,  I meant to measure mine today when I went flying.  Forgot.  So just now I went out to the garage to measure and get some pictures of the ones for my new Kitfox.  Couldn't find them....  From memory, they are about 3/8" in diameter, and pretty fine wire.  About .035" or so.  They have to be short enough so they don't want to come unhooked when that pedal is pushed all the way in.   Mostly I think their main function it to keep the rudder cables tight.  I'll try to remember tomorrow....  JImChuk

Was just looking at weight of the Continental engine, and this is what I found on Wikipedia.    That means a Jabiru 4 cylinder would be just a little less weight on the nose.  Hmmmm.  I see the plane's paperwork is still up to date as well, no airworthiness certificate yet though???  Wonder if the plane was ever flown?

Wow, did I read that right?  45' wing span?  Guess that is why it only needs 40 HP.   Do you know empty and gross weights JImChuk

Odd in a way,  I think it's kind of rare for a Kitfox to burn.  Also, it looked like a pretty open area that would have been conducive for an emergency landing.  Not sure if there is a skid trail, or it was windy and burnt stuff got blown in one direction.   At any rate, sad to see it happen.  JImChuk

  5. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Do I have the correct gear?

yep, it's a tricycle gear.  With your gear, you see the wheel is centered between the upper mounting points.  The taildragger gear has the wheel slightly ahead of the front attachment point.  Notice this picture.  JImChuk

  7. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Compatibility Avid MK4 and Kitfox

If it's a sling seat, it should fit.  I was measuring a Kitfox seat and Avid fiberglass seats recently, and it seemed like the back part of the Kitfox was 1" longer.  I do have a spare Kitfox fiberglass seat from a Kitfox 2.  Depending on what motor you were using in the Kitfox, the Avid cowl may work.  582 is spark plugs up in a Kitfox and inverted in the Avid, so for that the Kitfox cowl is a lot taller.  With a 912 though, it would be a lot closer.  I was actually going to use an Avid cowl on my Kitfox 4 with 912 build.  I have since sourced a Kitfox smooth cowl and will go with it.  If you meant elevator and horizontal stabilizer, it could probably be made to work with some modification, the MK IV elevator had a built in trim tab and I seem to remember the elevator is larger than earlier Avids.  This is my Kitfox 4 with Avid MK IV cowl.  It looks short because I have a modified longer motor mount.  The standard Kitfox 4 912 mount puts the engine about 4" further back.  JImChuk

  8. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Avid C Stol Rib Profile

Good idea Nick.  I'll see if I can do it.  Only problem may be if some one prints it out and their printer is not printing exactly to same size/scale.  I did measure the rib for an end to end length, I'll see if I can post the pictures I took as well.  JImChuk
PS  I did post them in the files and forms,  not sure it will work if you copy the images, and then print them out.  If some one tries, please let me know if it worked.

Avid STOL and Heavy Hauler rib sketch.
I traced out a rib on 5 pieces of copier paper that were taped to a table,  Also will try to post a few pictures showing the exact length of the rib.  That way if you copy and print off the sketches and tape them back together, you can double check if yours are the right length.  If your printer isn't printing full scale, it could be wrong size.  JImChuk
PS  not sure if this will work if you copy the images and then print them out.  If someone tries, let me know how it worked.

Just a few days ago, I traced out a rib on 5 sheets of printer paper taped down on a table.  Scanned the sheets and sent them to some one on facebook.  They could print them out, tape them back together and have a rib pattern.  Private message me your email and I'll send them to you.  JImChuk

Here is some info on the gear.  I do think he has modified his design somewhat though.  As I recall, the tube between the cabane and the gear leg attaches lower down, near the end of the axel.  JImChuk

There was an interesting video on youtube where a guy does pull tests on aluminum.  Amazing how much more it took to pull out the helicoil threads compared to just taped threads.  JImChuk

Sad for sure.  Always difficult for the family to get rid of stuff as well.  And not get robbed in the process.  Just yesterday I was at a friends place to figure out what he had and to help his widow dispose of it.  Nearly finished Murphy Rebel that he put years into.  At least he enjoyed working on it.  JImChuk

Sadly, it seems that not many people on the site have experience with the Catalina.  Myself included.  As long as I'm here though, I'll make this comment as far as engines go.  I'm a real fan of the 912 Rotax.  I'm flying with an 80 HP in my Kitfox 4 and have the 100HP in my new Kitfox 4 build.  They are very nice engines and pretty light for the power they produce.  There are more used ones out there all the time, especially as people move to higher HP Rotax engines.  I would really look into them rather than an auto conversion.  In the end you probably wont spend any more money, and will have a lighter better performing airplane as well.  JImChuk

I shipped a single Kitfox 2 landing gear  from Mn to Or a couple of weeks ago with UPS.  The box measured 14 x 14 x 33 and weighed 10 lbs.  Shipping cost was $92.53.  The guy at the store redid it three times because he couldn't believe it was right either.  It was right, but for sure seemed all wrong.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Best prop for STOL, Jabiru 2200

Funny deal there,  I had a Sensenich 2 blade ground adjustable prop for a Jabiru, and ended up selling it the Sam Rutherford.  Had to ship it to England as I remember.  Never heard from him after he got it.  I think I remember reading the plane got wrecked at some point after that.  He had some kind of adventure company, and they did some pretty wild things.  I just googled him and pulled this up among other things.  JImChuk

Actually those look like MK IV landing gear to me.  They were two inches taller than the earlier models, and had the step on them  JImChuk

Your calipers look right as far as I can see.  They have to be able to move in and out on the pins to stay centered on the brake rotor.

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox 4 build # 2

Well I'm still putzing on the new Kitfox build, I bought a Kitfox cabane style landing gear for it, and it had a set of aluminum 1 1/4" axels.  I could buy new 3/4" axels from grove for about $225, or look for some 6" wheels that use the 1 1/4" axels.   I've seen a video where a 3/4" axel broke on a grove gear, and it messed up the plane pretty quick.  I ended up making my own hubs that will still use the 8" wheels I have, and the 1 1/4" axels.  Bought some 4" long, 3" aluminum tube with 1/2" wall, and some 4" x 1/2" aluminum circles, all on ebay.  Machined things down, and took them to the welder.  Got them back yesterday, trued them up on the lathe, and pushed in the bearings.   They are done now and I think they will work just fine.  I like playing on the lathe anyway.  The dirty hub is the factory kitfox one for 3/4" axels.   JImChuk
