Look up Fred Stork in France. He flies an Avid with the Simonini. You can get 1st hand info from him. I believe he is on this sight and also on the Avid Flyer Aviator Forum (AFAF) group on Facebook and he has a vlog also and Youtube him. It seems a great choice. 582 ... well ... who's idea was that anyway !? Piece of rubbish just waiting to kill you with it's rotary shaft. Just a stupid idea at 65 hp. and 4 gph. Why not have 100 hp at 2 gph and the same weight and 4 times the tbo ?

I am currently working on composite ribs. The 1st attempt seems very promising. Longitudinal and vertical deflection is very similar to the wooden ribs. Weight  is a little better. 4.45 oz for wood and 3.40 oz for composite. These are only 1st impressions and it will need to be tested more extensively before I'll be able to make real claims. The rib tails for the flaperons are not done yet. They will be solid composite and will add that little weight again so I assume the weight overall may be the same or just marginally better than wood.

    JimChuck, thanks.
I know a gear drive should be more desireable than a belt drive, but in this case, what would be wrong with a belt drive ? They have been used for many years and are still in use. Anything in particular that you know about ?  Or anybody else ?  Would it be a maintenance issue or weight or reliablility etc ?
Any input will be much appreciated.

Yes, 3 cylinder 2 stroke engines. Mod 779 etc. Commonly used in snow mobiles. Powerful stuff, up to around 150 hp.

Has anybody here used a Rotax Triple in their aircraft ?

Yes, agreed. The gear stripped after 101 hours. I opened the engine afterward and I could not believe what I found. The engine was sold as a zero time unit but it was just an old piece of junk somebody slapped together and sold it. 1 new and 1 used piston with the rings seized on the old piston and also had a broken ring previously. The piston and the cylinderhead are damaged from that. All the seals are old and hard and carboned. It was nice and clean outside with new base and head gaskets showing and compressions were correct, so I trusted it. I did not want to open it believing it carried a warranty wich would have been be voided if I did open it. So I learnt not to trust anything. That gear though is the weak point of the 582.

JImChuk, the gear ( brass ) on the shaft stripped and the engine stopped with a 3 seconds warning. .

Has anyone converted / changed the Rotax 582 to reed valve induction instead of the rotary valve induction ? Can it be done ? Is there a kit for such a converion ? Any input would be appreciated. I love the 582's performance but got to distrust that rotary valve gear with a passion ! It cost me my airplane and it could have taken my life also. Thanks. Martin.

Thank you akflyer. I have  an idea to make a V shaped part that will be just below the windshield bottom lip with a drain hoses each side to the bottom that will catch the water and let it out to below the fuselage.

What would the difference be between the speed wing and heavy hauler wing profiles ? Are the upper curvatures the same and the bottoms different ?
    Enjoyed the video, thanks.

I have just recently accuired an Avid IV.  I see that there is only a piece of felt or something like that forming a seal between the upper cowl and the windshield. I am quite convinced that this cannot be a propper seal and should it stand outside the water will most def leak into the cabin and onto whatever equipment and the carpet / floorboards. I have an idea to fix this but thought i'd check if anybody already came up with a fix for this.
    Thanks.
    Martin.
