    Rotax 582 on ebay
Theres a used 582 for sale on ebay for 1500 plus 250 shipping. Not mine but thought about buying and thpught id post. Guy selling it for someone schecked and said it was a backup engine and the guy sold the plane. Has been sitting 5 years so will need to be recertified. Im thinking a couple hundred labor plus 100 in seals and whatnot and you have a good backup or upgrade if you have a 503 or whatever

Any Avid flyer (speedwing) tricycle conversion kits/plans etc available?
Im thinking i may be better off making my speedwing "convertable" between taildragger and speedwing. I live inside the airspace of a class C airport (AVL). About  9 miles max from me im guessing. So problem. Id fly from an airport farther away that uses its towers but.. basically with an spl as i understand it i cant fly in AVL's airspace. Theres a local instructor who has every cert known to man who trains SPL's for 5k which is a great deal. And he has taildraggers. Theres another school here who will train in your plane for 60 an hour but i dont think they have anyone certified for taildragger , but are accomodating and are  considering spl. By my math i can pay the 5k and get the spl and just avoid the hell out of.. the entire area i live in. Or i can spend a few grand and make the Avid easily convertable (ie bolton gear) then spend 3-4k for ppls lessons then another 1 or 2k for daildragger cert and have a: a ppl. B: a speedwing i can switch over at will. Make sense? Any advice would be welcome

Dont get me wrong.. im less being cheap  than thinking this whole system is f***ed. I own a plane. It's the first type of plane. I have zero desire to fly to towered airports. But im supposed to pay 200 an hour so that i can fly planes i dont ever want to fly then more money to fly the aircraft i own..so that i can..be in the sky above my home... I have zero problem handing an A&P a few grand to make my plane so perfect the CFI is superhappy with it. Or paying fuel + 60-100 an hour straight to a cfi and flying in my plane. The system seems rather idiotic .
PS ive trained truckers. IF the trucking industry were this idiotic youd all be starving naked in the cold.

Great idea. i was thinking a hidden switch. Youre braver than i am. im too paranoid to even just bypass the switch to start it.

    582 ignition switch
So ive lost the key to my avid somewhere so it gives me an excuse to do what i wanted to anyway.. replace the ignition switch. Mine may or may not be working.. ive used a voltmeter but even the docs say you need a special t ool to really test it.  Im kinda done with dealing with it and just want to use standard cheap switchs (its trailered and you really dont wanna come to my house and try to steal lol)
As far as i can see there is standard 12v dc  and 170 watt ac either of which ANY switch should handle. I dont want it to be ugly and id like a cover over the master etc so i was thinking one of these below and use them as 1: master 2: starter  3&4 magnetos  5 probably lights. Can anyone think of a specific reason i shouldnt? I know it's aviation and youre supposed to have magic aviation juice on everything but im not seeing a reason any switch would work.. these are tiny currents/voltages

awesome that you did this. i have a printer but dont trust plastic enough. But im planning on eventually finding something like a small car emergency brake or making something that gives me multiple flap options

I bought my speedwing for 12k + 800 for the  trailer. Needs some minor wiring when i get time but thats it.
Id be very happy to see them go to 20+ k though... 8k profit in 6 months would be sweet

    Avid 582 schematic
Im looking for schematics? I have an electronics problem.. basically you have to start the motor bypassing the switch. This was a known problem when i went to pick it up it was running.. he cut it off to talk and told me about the problem. I just tested the bendix switch (5 position turn start) and per the tests it seems good. But i just checked and strobes  etc dont turn on. There were two broken wires. One is a thin silver looking hard wire.. its pretty new. I think it goes to the tach of all things.. The master was disconnected, i reconnected after testing. I  think the owner was rewiring it when he decided to park it (he ground looped but didnt damage the plane and was going to have the owner put tricycle gear on it).
I think i should just rewire the whole thing from scratch but i know nothing about how these magneto motors work. Id appreciate anything close to a schematic. It has all the standard avionics.
Im also considering just dropping it off at the nearest a&p but im worried about the cost as imho the aviation industry is literally set up legally to rip pilots off. Should i do that? I know electronics but an aircrafts electronics is something you dont want to find out you oopsed on at 3000 feet

Cant believe noone jumped on this, other than the worry about the engine. I got a hella deal on my speedwing for 12k. (unfortunately im going to have to rewire it so maybe less of a deal). 100hp, stol wing, looks in great condition.. thats a hell of a deal

I think you may make a LOT of money. With kitfox's popularity (Mostly because of Trent i think) these planes are just going to keep getting more popular. And i agree with the guy above. someday im going  to want some heavy hauler wings.

thanks for all the advice especially on the bungees. Guys if you see people talking about the hardware store bungees or even trucking bungees (MUCH  stronger etc etc) tell them NOT to use them .the hardware bungees are likely the lowest quality fauxrubber they can find and i can tell you as someone who used to buy the big black bungees by the case they tend to last a few months before effectively dry rotting (becoming brittle). Theyre not designed for long term use.
Allen from Everything ive read 5k a year is average for a LOW end certified aircraft. people talk about cherokees (the plane id buy if i wanted a certified tricycle) running 10k a year. thats if you dont fly it.
The engine is a 582. I was looking at kitfox's with 912s but noticed i kept raising my price limit and stopped myself. I bought a dave clark h10 60 from a friend which should be ok.
as for distance.. im a professional truck driver.. while you guys think an hour long drive is long.. ive driven over 900 after a 4 hour unload to get home. And on average truckers drive 500-600 a day im something probably Louder and bumpier than most airplanes so the 3 hours to the beach wont be a problem heh. You guys who dont like flying more than 2 hours i get it. Heres the trick you learn trucking. Put a LOT of work into comfort and reducing vibration and sound. A day in a daycab (loud, BUMPY, vibratey!) i come home and pass out. A day in a volvo (think lexus) and i come home fresh and alive. The sound reduction matters a LOT.

Matthew it DOES look like thermocouple wire but it goes to the tach? Im just going to splice it. The other stuff i have to trace when i have time. Oh im old man i dont do projects. these are SMALL things  to do while i cant fly it. For instance im installing a nose/ground camera because i dont see the fascination with not seeing where youre going. Im thinking of rigging up a laser height thingy to give me audible or visual indications of "hey youre WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too damned high"  if i can find an accurate one. Current plan is a tablet i can switch between gps/cameras and maybe some avionics someday when i get rich.

And.. im kinda thinking of running it without a spinner.. it does look kinda cool and different

I have a dave clark h10-60. Prop im not certain about ill have to dig through the logs. Original was a gsc 57 3 blade but currently it has a 2 blade "ivoprop 2 blade med." which i THINK is adjustable on the ground. (which is why i think the spinner was actually off). The wires that literally broke appears to be a solid wire.. probably silver/steel. All easily fixed. It looks like someone decided to redo the wiring with good new wiring (and the fuel system as well) and got half done.  I think the owner  groundlooped and decided to get a tricycle (he's 70+). Plane wasnt damaged btw.  Ill check on the failsafe.  Ill check on warp drive.

The reason i want the cabin sealed better isnt totally noise. Im a professional trucker and i know the toll noise/vibration/temp/atmosphere have on you. Believe it or not our job is FAR more dangerous than flying (or than the superbike i ride). Fatigue causes death. What kind of bush gear? Id love some giantass bush wheels but replacing $3000 tires every couple years sounds painful I literally chose the avid because a: kitfox's are laughably overpriced. b: ill be damned if i pay 5 grand a year to some scamming a&p and 100 a month to sit a cherokee on someones grass

Bought an Avid Speedwing, need advice
I found an avid speedwing not.. excessively far away for a really good price and bought it. Not a pilot yet (this is my motivation) but checked it out fairly well and i trust the guy who sold it to me for reasons. It was registered in 96 ad Mk iv or c (it gets confusing) . Engine starts. another 70 hours before rebuild. It has sat for probably 2 years . The guy who sold it to me said hed change out the fuel lines as he doesnt like the type on there. Its only flaws are someone was redoing the wiring and screwed some things up. Im honestly thinking of almost entirely rewiring it. (thats some old wiring folks). Replacing the fuel lines.. it has new fuel filters. Im kinda athinking i should replace the bungees though the guy told me (long after he sold it to me) they were fine but i could check them. One thing we forgot (i was tired) was the prop spinner? any suggestions? i have no desire to pay whatever kitfox charges for a carbon fiber spinner.
Any thing else i should do? I want to seal it better to cut down wind noise.. any tips? products? im thinking some sort of fiberglass tape.
They moved to a much bigger radiator located below the engine in front which means more air resistance but im thinking it should stay very cool. Id like to run a small heater inside. Any tips or links on this? I was thinking a heater core from some very small car with a cutoff switch.

I want to get this all done before i finish my license which i expect to do in 6 months ( i work a LOT). I could use any suggestions on things to replace/check/upgrade. From those of you who fly an avid kitfox.. my cruise speeds is supposedly right around 90-100mph which is awesome. Would it be useful to eventually extend the wings/mod chassis for another 100 pounds and lower cruise speed? I plan on mostly using it to occasionally fly 240 miles to the beach on my one day off.. and to mess around locally away from airports maybe finding some remote fields?

Im looking for any advice .

    Thanks,

    Charles
