I posted the image url that shows the entire engine with the mount to googe image search and found the engine on ebay too: https://www.ebay.com/itm/254974768126?hash=item3b5dae33fe:g:I3QAAOSwW9Rgf4mb
interestingly this post lists Nampa ID as the location of the engine, which is in deed near boise.. but why list it in the spokane craigslist with this story of having to visit someone there and NOT list it in the boise craigs list where the seller lives as well? that seems pretty odd..
    https://boise.craigslist.org/d/for-sale/search/sss?query=rotax&sort=rel
while i don't know rotax engines, i have yet to buy my first 912, this particular one looks quite corroded (on the outside) to me.. rusty prop flange and corroded zinc plating on bolts as well as rusty exhaust bolts.. looks like that drone was decommissioned after ditching it

@1avidflyer I don't know what your installation looks like, but in case you have mounted the fan directly onto the heater core, try to move it away from the heater a few inches (with a duct going from the fan to the heater of course. The reason for this suggestion is, that a fan mounted directly onto the heater core will only use a small circular area of the actual heater core and the rest will be more or less unused. by adding some distance between the fan and the core you allow the turbulent air of the fan to cover more of the heater core and therefore more heat is transferred which should help to boost your heater's efficiency.
i've done that for cooling equipment in server rooms a couple of times to optimize the cooling efficiency of poorly engineered cooling solutions, so i guess it probably also works on a smaller scale and for heating

Trig TT31 Mode-S Transponder with ADS-B Out capability
i'm upgrading my panel and intend to swap my TT31 Transponder to a TT22 remote unit controlled through my new efis. I am therefore selling my TT31 including an ACK A-30 Alticoder, wiring harness and mounting frame. I'm asking 1780 USD + shipping (from switzerland, so that's going to be probably around $100 to the US). with an appropriate GPS source attached to it this Transponder can fulfill the  ADS-B 2020 requirement (according to the webpage below, i'm no expert regarding us rules though)

well i guess i should have posted this to the "dumb stunts" forum i called the seller and he agreed to take it back and pay most of the money back, minus some $$ for packing it up etc. but that's allright.. i don't think he knowingly sold me chunk and after all i could have looked closer at the original picture he posted in the ad which was low res but still good enough to see the geometrical differences between his mount and the avidkitplanes one.
so after all just a dumb stunt that cost me a few bucks to learn a lesson
so in case anybody out there has a 912 mount for my avid, please let me know i'm still interested!
this at least helps me to understand, how we got to the over-regulated stucture in aviation as we know it. in switzerland even experimentals are quite regulated and anything structural needs to be verfied by approved engineers and stuff before you are allowed to mount it to your plane.. for exmaple this engine mount, since i can't prove with pictures that it has the same structure as the original and since it is obvious, that it was not welded professionally would probably never make it through the final inspection before getting the permit to fly.. i'm not saying that i agree with the politics, that we need to save every idiot's live by taking away the freedom of everybody else and over complicating things, but at least now i understand, how this specific regulation probably got into existence..

Paul, are you saying that the original mount is also different in its design (like where the pipes attach to and all that)? that would mean i can't even use it as a template
EDIT: i can actually answer this question myself.. looking at the avidkitplanes engine mount it is clearly even a different shape.. the upper and lower connecting rods between the round mounting holes are straight here and bent in mine.. also the round mounts look far bigger and seem to have a different shape alltogether.
geee.. i'll try to convice the seller to take that think back.. thank you all for confirming my observations (and i'm happy to hear that this is not the quality level of the rest of the plane ;))

Fred i have to tell you something my 2.5 year old son really loves your videos. his absolut favourite is "Barbecue Tignes 2019" which he calls in swiss german somewhat like "airplane snow" .. watching "airplane snow" is probably my ultimate trump i get to play when i want to get him to agree to do stuff he does not want to do, like go to bed in the evening or take a bath before doing so.. usually the deal goes like "okay, we will watch airplane snow once and then you go to bed" .. of course in such situations the bargaining does not end there and he usually manages to squeeze in Wellness Firday as well as the taildragger brotherhood .. not that his father would mind watching those together with him on the couch in the evning
i'm happy to have another one to add to the list, especially since this one features HB-YMX which was the very Avid i got a chance to fly before i decided to buy and hopefully eventually finish building the one i have now keep posting. I hope that one day we will meet at such a fly in or somewhere on a moutain strip

I bought an "original" 912 Mount
Hi guys. i am in the market for a 912 mount ever since i bought my unfinished avid Model C over a year ago.by now i have ordered two replicas of the original avid mk iv engine mount for hte rotax 912 from two independent sources (one from avidkitplanes, the ohter one is a guy in the netherlands who supposedly has a jig and offered to produce one). both orders are pending since last spring and neither of the two has delivered anything (in all fairness, they haven't billed anything either, so all is good).
Imagine my excitement, when i recently found an Ad on a german UL site, where someone offered an original, unpainted, unused 912 mount for the avid. I immediately called the seller and bought the thing. Today I got the parcel and anxiously unwrapped it.
Well that was a bit of a shock, because what i took out of that box looked as if i had tried to build an engine mount myself, an i have no clue about welding! all i have is a cheap mig welder with a low and high power setting and i use it like a hotglue gun, only hotter! to my eye, the engine mount i got looks like it was produced by a person with about the same take on welding as myself.
so those of you familiar with either welding or the build quality of the original avid parts, can you please take a look at those pictures and tell me, if against my intuition, this thing could really be trusted to hold a 100hp rotax at the front of my avid?

it does sit flat on the floor, so whoever built it seems to have had a jig at least for the firewall or it was welded directly ont he firewall,

the different bows are not all in the same plane.. they don't really form a ring. not sure if that was even intended but it sure looks a bit off like that.

that's what i mean by "hot glue only hotter" .. this is exactly what my welds look like, and i too take a grinder to it afterwards if i want to make it look pretty

this pipe shows "wrinkles" from bending it.. it seems to have been bent by adding dents on the inside rather than forming it with a rolling tool.

on one of the two larger arcs, there is even a serous dent which looks like it happened either when clamping, hammering it in place or while bending the pipe.

one of the straight pieces at leas shows the letters "MIL" which seem to indicate this is some kind of military grade material

the bushings are all marked with probably some angle numbers, 42°, 40.5°, 41° and 38° if i interpret them correctly

some of them look like they had a hard time so far.. a few dents are probably from storing and shipping it around, but most of it seems to have happened in production already.

so many different colors and so much grinding.. with the little experience i have, this really looks like no one could guess what the material strength at this attachment point really is. i did things like that for little push-carts i have built and these where exactly the kind of joints that would crack up and break first.

even though everything looks like it was never used, this pipe seems to have some primer or something left on it.. so maybe it was scrapped from somewhere? or is that only a protective paint that's put on the raw stock to preserve it?

If i had mad this, this would be the weld i'd show everybody and brag about .. it is also by far the nicest on the entire mount and accessories.

so please tell me what you think about this mount.. maybe i can at least use it to build a jig and then hand it over to a real welder to produce a safer replica of this..
i have to say, i have never seen any original avid parts in a raw state.. i bought my avid fully covered and painted with a rotax 582 at the front which did some ground runs 20 years ago and was then left sitting in a shed, so that one really needs to go and i want to replace it with a 912 before the maiden flight of this avid.
by the way, i've payed about 750$ for this.. compared to a new one from avidkitplanes for 1000$ this seemed like a fair offer for a 2nd hand part... not so sure about this deal anymore.
    cheers

  11. Pascal added a post in a topic iPad EFIS

i am currently building a panel with 2x 8" android tablets and 1x MGL MX-1 (8" portrait mode) .. it is not for an avid though, the panel is higher than the avid's. On my avid i plan on using the MGL iEFIS 8" display in landscape mode. the MGL's are extremely light, actually so light that they feel a bit flimsy when you hold them in your hand, i had really expected more weight. I will use the MGL as my primary flight display and have added a Talos Aeolus sense which is connected via WiFi to the tablets to provide a backup ADHRS (that's mandated even for VFR if you rely on purely electronic gauges here in switzerland). For the tablets i have built some custom mounting frames which flush-mount the tablets from the back to the panel. I have 3d printed those and added the 5v power supply and a 5v 40mm fan to provide additional airflow for cooling the tablets. In my previous plane i was using another Huawei 7" tablet as my nav display and i had it mounted on the panel in the sun and it never overheated..
i have also heared, that newer ipad's don't overheat as much as older ones.. no idea if that holds true but i think as long as you cool them with a fan they should be fine.. there are also nice panel mounts available for ipads.. don't recall the name of the manufacturer anymore, but you will find it if you google for it.
here is a picture of what it is going to look like. currently the panel itself is just a thin mdf sheet that i have routed to test the fit of everything before i make the final panel in aluminum.

here is a picture of the 3d printed mount.. it attaches to the panel from the back and the tablet is just held in there by the panel pushing it into the cutout. the whole mount is about 140 grams (only 15% infill was used for the plastic), it is printed in a speacial PET-G plastic which is flame retardant. I have cut some holes in the back of the tablet and soldered in some wires to bring the power button, volume buttons and audio out to a SUB-D 15 pin plug so i can connect it to the wiring harness. i also had to move the usb connector for charging the tablet to the back because as you can see on the above picture, i was quite limited in hight and cound not afford to plug in a usb connector at the bottom of the tablet. but all that is nothing a dremel can't solve for you

@Iv2plyguitar: may I ask if you had to modify anything from the firewall back like the geometry of the vertical stabilizer or elevator? I've learned that they are slightly tilted to compesate for the propeller wash of a 2-stroke which turns the other way and read that the Model IV does not have that anymore, they seem to have straight stabilizers and elevators instead. how did you fix this on yours?
I have a model c which i want to finish building with a 912. original MK iV mount is on its way to me.

    2020/07/31 - 08/02 Switzerland EAS Fly-In
For those based in europe: the swiss EAS (basically the swiss version of the EAA) is hosting a fly-in on the weekend of july 31 to august 2.
The full details for the event can be found here:
    https://sites.google.com/view/experimental-aviation
There are currently about 50 registered aircraft with 3 kitfox among them and a good mix of other experimental types.
Sadly avids and kitfox registered abroad as ultralight are not allowed to enter swiss airspace, only experimentals can. Switzedland unfortunately has very restrictive rules for ultralights
If anyone is planning to come from the forum drop me a note, would love to put some faces to the names.
    Cheers

    Brändli Cherry BX-2
how did brittney say.. "ups i did it again" ... almost a year after i bought my unfinished Avid Flyer Model C, and about half a year after I sold my "daily flyer" (i wish it was daily), i bough anogher airplane ..
here is the story that led to me purchasing another airplane.. or at least that's how i found a reason to buy another one ..
i sold my other aircraft last summer and with it i had lost my hangar space. the airplane was bought by the flight school where i had learned to fly and i made a deal that would allow me to rent it back for a very attractive price.. as a matter of fact i would be able to fly it for about half the cost than when i owned it. the airplane was supposed to be used as a rental for touring only and not for trainig new pilots.
however, around new year another airplane of that flight school crash landed after an engine failure. luckily nobody was hurt but the airplane was totalled. at around the same time i got an unexpected invoice for the rental of "my" hangar space. turns out, the school never informed the airport authority about the owner change of "my" aircraft. knowing, that it is extremly hard to get a new hangar space in the future (10+ years waiting lists) and suspecting, that my former aircraft will probably now be converted to a school airplane which means, it won't be available as much and it will most likely get more expensive for me to rent it due to all the extra equipment (brake upgrades, silencer, some more avionics etc.) i called the school and asked them, if they still needed "my" hangar space, as they had moved the airplane to the space of the crashed one recently.
they responded that they did not plan to replace the crashed plane, so there i was, i suddenly had an empty hangar space and potentially a struggle to find a slot to rent my airplane back.. so the decision was made, to buy something small and cheap to operate to keep me flying whenever i wanted in the near future, at least until i finish my avid and potentially even longer..
i started to look around for a cheap to buy and fly experimental aircraft, preferrably registered in switzerland. ideally it would be something different from an avid or kitfox, possibly something that covers a different mission.. a fast traveller for example.
with a bit of luck i found exactly that within about a week of searching around the web. what was important was, that i wanted to have an airplane that was flyable as is and did not need too much extra work because i already have my avid project which is not progressing as fast as i would like due to a new member in our family ..
the airplane i bought begining of this week is a plans built wood and composite aircraft. it is a two seater with retractable gear and it is powered by a Continental C90-8F, which means it has no electric starter! Actually even the alternator was retrofitted to the engine. with the 90 hp of the continental engine the airplane will cruise at around 130mph and carry two people with a little bit of baggage. it is fairly tight, but nothing i would not need to get used to anyway for the avid
it has removable wings and a trailer was included in the deal, which comes in very handy right now as it is currently deregistered as the owner had stopped flying it two years ago, so it needs a fresh annual and a airworthyness check by our FOCA (like FAA). I had the engine checked for corrosion prior to buying it and it was deemed to be in good shape. one thing i want to do is replace the radio with a newer one, as we are no longer allowed to use 25khz band in europe since about a year ago, so my other option would be to fly without radio or use a handheld. no radio is not an option because of the complex airspace my home airfield is in, and a hand held will be fiddly to operate due to the same reason.
my plans are, to actually replace the entire dashboard and only keep the transponder out of all my existing instruments and equipment.. everything else will have to go. i will then install a MGL MX1 with a hidden MGL V16 radio operated through the touchscreen of the MX1.. add to that a panel mounted tablet for my nav software and i'm all set
so some work to do after all, but i have to wait for my Mechanic to be available for the annual anyways, so i might as well do that in the meantime.
i've attached  a few pictures of the airplane and the current dashboard. i've hand-propped it already and still have all my body parts attached to me, not so difficult to do after all.. i'm really looking forward to flying it later this summer.. it will be my first time landing a tri-gear

    cheers

the taildragger i used to own (Jodel DR1050) came with drum brakes from the factory. the flight school where i got my PPL had those same aircraft but they put quite aggressive cleveland brakes in there. It is a never ending debate on the Jodel mailing lists weather brakes on a taildragger should be able to lock up or not.. i personally had mine tuned so i could theoretically lock the brakes and flip my airplane if i wanted.. personally i would have preferred the aggressive disk brakes we had on the school airplanes, but the conversion was so expensive, that i decided to live with the stock setup and it worked just fine.
I think in the end it boils down to what you need in order to go to the places you want.. if you land often in super tight spots where you really need to keep your braking distance to a minimum it is probably better to risk flipping your airplane if you are doing something wrong rather than crashing into trees because your brakes didn't pull hard enough .. with the above aircraft i could land in most grass fields around here without even touching the brakes, so i really didn't need the disk brakes.
another factor is also the weight and balance of your aircraft and the grip of your tires on the runway.. trent palmer made a video about how he lands and he stated that he often touches down with his wheels locked.. he's got enough weight behind the main wheels and not enough grip with his tires on the dirt to flip the plane.. so being able to lock your wheels does not necessarily mean you are going to flip your airplane if you land with locked brakes..
