Matthewtanner added a post in a topic Aluminum vs stock belly radiator
Very cool, seems as though the cooling requirements weren’t nearly as robust as I anticipated, stock 582?

Is that belly radiator the only one you run? Or do you have cheeks as well?

I don’t have the repair man certificate. It has an airworthiness from having a vw motor, but it’s never flown. I changed the motor to Rotax 582. Idk what to do with my hands.

That answers my question Jim, he had two mounts for sale and I’ll just pick up the dynasmoooth so I don’t need to fab a bracket for the regular mount

So there is a possibility I loose some weight!!! I’m gonna try and see if I can go tubeless but I don’t know what kind of wheels I have, been trying to get everything else fixed before I spend money on silly things

I think for what it was, it served its purpose as a modality to “hold my beer, pretty sure I make more thrust than you” kind of day

Friendly thrust competitionFor those interested, I bought a large game 550lb scale for 15 dollars at tractor supply and used it to see how much thrust I was making vs my buddy’s chief we just put together. I’m thinking I may have left some rpm on the table, but i pulled 290lbs of thrust competing against a aeronca chief @ 260

Depends on your definition of turning. You can use all the control surfaces to change direction....or one...just requires orchestration and balance

that was my goal was to use fiberglass to strengthen it, if not I was just gonna use foam with duct tape, which is what I’ll probably do for all the other tubes

The piece resulted in a extremely rigid foam cored fairing...somethings I’ll do different scaling up:
order good fiberglass and epoxy
Mount to a wooden dowel to keep epoxy and such from encroaching the trough and allow it to be able to stand vertical
use 3 layers of fiberglass instead of a filler layer, just adds too much labor to sand
i think I can get the same shape with a table
saw vs hand carving

I was gonna start in on some sanding and finishing work but didn’t think the juice was worth the squeeze. I’ll use this piece to do some measuring and figment work

After routing and shaping I added 2 layers of cheap Lowe’s fiberglass and epoxy resin made for “glazing” counter tops

Fiberglass strut fairing POCSo I wanted to see if it’s a viable option, and prove my concept. I went Uber cheap materials, stuff you can buy from Lowe’s, I did minimal man hours so that I wasn’t wasting all this time on a burner piece. Someone may poke holes in it, but I plan on scaling up. I took insulation foam from Lowe’s, cut out 2” strip by 22”. I shaped it with a wood file very quickly to the dimensions I’ve seen on this forum. 2 layers of fiberglass I bought at Lowe’s, with epoxy resin also bought at Lowe’s. Then I used short hair body filler all over. I think the body filler will add tons more sanding work, so on scaled up version probably just add a 3rd layer. Ended up weight .18 oz per inch...calculated it for 4 8ft long struts comes out to 4.3lbs. This is a rough estimate as a 3rd layer of fiberglass may be heavier than the filler.

Motor mount weight differenceI have the dyna smooth/vibe? Engine mount for my 582...wondering what the difference is between the regular mount vs dynasmooth? If I go to a clutched gearbox, I’d add a few pounds, it’d be nice to be at a net zero or even still be lighter with the standard mount. Just me spitballing again.
