    damn it's dead in here...
It was dead around here... guess the novelty wore off..ohwell., I plan on getting back to my avid project this time home and hope to have some new pics  to show..but then again, a fishing trip may trump the avid work...going out and catching halibut, salmon, shrimp and shark in the same day has a certain appeal to it right now..

dat one big gaggle of 2 strokes
the first pic is a pair of canadair 215's that just loaded up at a lake about 20 miles away.  The second pic you have to zoom in right over the tire and you can see one of them dropping the water.  This was about 300 yards away from my cousins cabin as they were trying to hold the line to keep it from jumping the road.. They did the job and got it shut down just before it hit his cabin!

sweet!  I will be looking for a hangar in a couple months.. but so far it is looking like 450-600 a month for a local t hangar... HOLY Crap! I am thinking for that kind of money I may as well get a lease at the airport and build my own hangar..

    forest fire flight
just flew up to check out a few buddies cabins. So far the fire has burned 50,000 acres of prime recreation and snowmachining areas that I play in all winter. Lots of buddies cabins are gone now..the last pic is home sweet home

dooooohhh. looks like the heat affected zone got a bit brittle.  I would not monkey with a repair either unless it was my only option in some remote village..I can tell you from chasing cracks like that on snowmachines that unless you stress releive the muffler / pipe after welding chances are that it wont last long... On the older artic cat race sleds we would have to stress releive a brand new pipe in order to make the entire race without blowing out a seam.

yeppers.. and no peep from deke..

I actually like the play by play, and seeing people have a running dialog without someone shitting themselves and screaming that it was "fluff"...however.. nothing like self ownage...opening up and telling the world your buddy is flying outside his privileges..

With that being said... I AM NO ANGEL and hope some of my exploits are never published and the wrong person sees it..but then again.. I really don't give a shit.. I was once threatened with license revocation.. (they don't like it when you put experimental floats on a certified plane and don't bother with paperwork or permission).. at any rate, I ended up telling them that if they thought that pulling my ticket would stop me from flying they were sadly mistaken... at least as long as I had my ticket I would stay current on medical, biannual etc.. in the end they saw things my way.

<to any form of flying anytime anywhere

I have allready established a hurt feelings form box outside my office door.. I have been dealing with premadona girly men for the last week and am just about to fire the lot of them lol... My patience level for stupidity is very low.. and whiny stupidity is even lower lol...

New Tundra Tire for 6" wheels
I justy got off the phone with Kevin at MIPPI and they are now manufacturing the kingfox tire for the 6" wheel.. That is great news to those of us who have the 6" wheels.  He is thinking that they should be available in the next month!

  16. akflyer added a post in a topic Parts Suppliers for Avid and Kitfox

I just read the manual on it.  It only states that you need to have a filter before the ducer so you dont clog up the gauze filter in the transducer as that could lead to engine damage.. So I thinkthe best bet would be to install a bypass line and a valve you could hit real quick if it starts clogging inflight....
Of course..while everything mechanical can and will go wrong at one time or another, how great is the risk really??  I have the screens in the tank, a filter on each tank before the gascolator, a filter after the gascolator and one after the fuel shutoff / tank selector valve..Any shit gets through to the transducer, and I have not been looking at the see through filter in the pre-flight...

I am not sure it would really be worth putting in bypass line... I dont have a spare engine behind the seat just incase my rotax gives out on me....There can be many trains of thought on this one.

    Steve,
I have seen several guys on the list that used the flowscan.  That is the nice thing about experimental.. we can use parts that are not PMA/FAA approved.  I remember that the guys that had used them loved them and did not have any problems.

    http://www.boatersland.com/f210.html

This looks interesting..you can make it a part of the preflight to punch in how many gallons you have onboard and it will keep track of fuel burn and give you a low fuel alarm.. and it is cheap!  I changed my mind from the flowscan and I think I will give this one a go.

question on mounting full lotus floats
I have a set of Full Lotus 1260's to Put on my avid.  The came with skystar rigging for a kitfox.  The kitfox has a float mount that is 10" ahead of the front gear attach point, that the Avid does not have.  The way the fuse pinches in at the nose, the most I could get would be about 4" if I welded in a new fitting.  What I am thinking of doing is just using the front gear mount and the rear mount would go under the wing strut at that attach point.  This puts the two mounts allot closer together than on most conventional float mounts (about 22"-24" apart).  While it may look a bit awkward, does anyone see any problem with doing this?  I don't want to end up breaking the back of the Avid because the rear mount was too far forward.... but then again, this is a pretty short coupled plane and has allot of bracing in the back... Any thoughts?

  20. akflyer added a post in a topic To windy for me to fly today, so.....

very nice...I have been on many commercial boats as I grew up commercial fishing.. from 8' dingys to 86' crabbers..  I have only been sailing once when I went to Kenosha to pick up a 1962 chriscraft.. The guy I bought it from was a master of the ocean and had a 60' schooner he had rigged to sail single hand.. I was not to impressed till the wind caught the sail, heeled her over and about pulled the wheel outa my hands... what a rush to feel that power you cant see.  The wife allready knows that the retirement home will be a sail boat... and the kids will be out of the house in 3 more years !!

And no... I did not have fun at work today... But I did kill 32 viruses I picked up yesterday from the us steel buildings site while researching my new shop..and now have the laptop back up and running...I wont be buying from them now though lol..

    wanted wanted wanted
I am looking for a set of 8" wheels and hubs for a kitfox or avid.  I need these to mount up a set of kingfox tires so I dont look like a damn pavement pounder.
Anyone have any leads on them, or atleast a set of hubs that I can adapt to my one piece 8" wheels let me know!

Also looking for a set of door lift strut mounts.. I know I can make them pretty darn easy, but I am runnng out of summer and want to cut my fab. time..

    Thanks

  23. akflyer added a post in a topic Fwd view .... Series 5

that is the same view I get on the mod II.  I just line up slightly off centerline.  With the left wheel on the centerline, I can keep things straight.  At touchdown, I am not at a full 3 point, but I do transistion from looking ahead to looking out the side and down at the wheel or the runway lights.  Kind of like doing glassy water landings.. you dont land out in the middle of the lake, you land near the shore line and watch the shore to see where the water is as you cant tell by looking down.  That is one reason why I like lakes with lillypads.. as long as you land in the pads, you know there is enough water there and can see the surface just fine..

By the way.. I am jealous again.. I am back at work for 3 weeks and you are out flying....

just wanted to make you feel at home lol....

is yours a speed wing?  If so, what do you rotate at?  on my buddies avid speed wing it is tail up at about 35-40 and rotate at 55-60...he took off in front of me and by mid runway I was 500+ feet higher that him and turning down wind while he was still climbing to pattern altitude..
He touches down around 55.. I would think that with power and trim you could get her down a bit slower.. but who knows.. I have not flown a 5 yet.
