Another first timer question: Getting closer to laying down fabric and wondered if I should have my leading edge and other work "looked" at before I begin the fabric? I believe the FAA only requires the final DAR inspection to sign off that the plane is airworthy, but didn't know if it made sense (was helpful) to have someone look at the work as it progresses?

This rather old video clearly shows the improvement made by fairing a round tube.

    Ron and Jim,
Thanks for the details and great pictures! It will be most helpful as the work on the wings continues.

Larry - the plywood is 3 ply birch from Wicks and only .8mm, slightly less than 1/32 thick, so I have no concern with the wing flexing like it should. In fact, it's even more flexible than the original aluminum that came with the kit. The aluminum wasn't  placed properly by the guy who started the plane so I decided to replace it with the plywood. I liked the concept of the "solid" leading edge and the plywood will bounce back rather than permanently dent like the aluminum.

Even though it's not required, I believe the rib stitching is worth doing because of the undercambered wing.
Thanks Ed, your ideas make sense - I'll be interested to see what others say.

Well we've made some progress and have removed the aluminum leading edge (that was not properly installed) and replaced it with plywood. Not ready for fabric yet but before I begin that work I wanted to confirm that the rib stitching would begin just aft of the plywood. And the fabric would be glued to the entire span of the plywood.

You might wanted to ping Av8r3400 (Larry) as he has (or had) a pretty neat ski set up that I think he made. I believe the attached pic is of his Model 4 - 1050 with skis attached.

This info, found in FAR 25.993, does say flexible hose has to be approved but contradicts the notion of only being able to use rigid lines.
    (a) Each fuel line must be installed and supported to prevent excessive vibration and to withstand loads due to fuel pressure and accelerated flight conditions.

    (b) Each fuel line connected to components of the airplane between which relative motion could exist must have provisions for flexibility.

    (c) Each flexible connection in fuel lines that may be under pressure and subjected to axial loading must use flexible hose assemblies.

    (d) Flexible hose must be approved or must be shown to be suitable for the particular application.

    (e) No flexible hose that might be adversely affected by exposure to high temperatures may be used where excessive temperatures will exist during operation or after engine shut-down.

    (f) Each fuel line within the fuselage must be designed and installed to allow a reasonable degree of deformation and stretching without leakage.

  10. RobS added a post in a topic EPA Raising Ethenol Levels in 2017

Unfortunately, I don't think ethanol is going away anytime soon. There is a push to convert from corn-based ethanol to ethanol that is cellulose based. The renewable fuel standard program that was passed by Congress in 2007 set a target of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels blended in the nation's fuel supply by 2022. Corn ethanol was supposed to be capped at 15 billion gallons in 2016 under the law, with cellulose biofuels filling most of the remaining target over the remaining six years.
Using wood or switchgrass to make ethanol may help with food prices, but it still won't be good for our airplanes.

Doug - you're thoughts pretty much align with what I've been thinking. If I were going to change the tanks, now would be the time as I haven't started to cover the wings. But then I think of the cost, time, and PITA that would be versus the benefit and I'm not sure it's worth it. Seems like others have had good experience with the original Avid tanks holding up (if you go E-free), so I'm going to stick with the original tanks as the first owner of my kit did a really good job of installing them.
Thanks again to this group - it's really good to be able to hear from others on the thoughts that are bouncing around in my head!

Doug and Joey thanks for the info - looks like one more thing for me to consider.
One general question about the original Avid fiberglass tanks. In general, how do they hold up if you use 100LL or mogas with no ethanol? I have access to ethanol-free mogas at two airports close to me and I'd pay about a $1.00/gallon premium for it over gas with ethanol, but this stuff is guaranteed free of corn mash!

    Doug,
Can you explain your comment about the "the new poly tank was placed in the old tank like many of the 'cut out the top of the old tank' retro installs. I have the traditional wrapped Avid tanks and would like to hear more about this. What new tank was used to drop into the old tank and are they still available?

No need for a motor mount, but I'd be interested in hearing more about Cub style gear and F7A bell cranks if shipping costs could be kept reasonable.
Only 4,829 miles between us according to ZeeMaps, so shipping will be a breeze . . .
