Well, folks. I need some direction.

I recently found myself with time on my hands. The first thing I did, was start looking for information and parts for the kitfox 3 kit I picked up a few years ago. It was kind of started by the previous owners, meaning the landing gear, floor boards and control mixer/ rudder pedals were loosely mounted.

I was looking through the printed manual and paperwork, and realized I have nothing for a chain of custody, except the original packing list to the original buyer with the kit serial number.

The wings, except for the flaperons, 2 13gallon ethanol resistant fuel tanks, struts and jury struts are missing. Basically I would need the spars, stiffeners, ribs, false ribs, bracing, brackets etc...

I have have used a tracing from JimChuk and pictures of KF3 ribs and managed a pretty close CAD file for a rib without a tail. I have a CAD file from Willja67 that matches fairly reasonably, and a Masonite template cut off of my cad file that matches pretty closely to the tracing. It wouldn't take much to get a template with a tail.

I have acquired the rest of the controls, except the tube that goes to the elevator (I have the other parts of the tube). I also went through and ordered pretty much all of the hardware out of the manual. There is no motor, mount, or prop, however, I have a bump style cowl.

With all of that said, with what I have read, it seems like it may not be possible to register it once built. Can anyone provide direction here? Would it be better for me to just sell the parts I have at this point?

I have an opportunity to buy a flying KF-2 and am interested in opinions on the purchase. I know the builder and it was a quality build. the flaperon mounts were modified with the reinforcing angles during the build. As far as I know it has always been hangered. It was finished in 92 and I assume most of the do-able modifications available to that date were done. It has a gray head 582 and dual wing tanks. It is a good performer but has a fairly high empty weight (about 510lbs). Seems to me I had read about 430lbs was typical. It is being offered to me at a very attractive price. Most of my flying is boring holes in the sky solo but do like to take passengers along when I have the opportunity. I am currently working (very slowly) on a C model Avid. Opinions on the KF-2? Any comparisons good or bad to the Avid C? Any input would be appreciated.

Does anyone have experience in selecting "Built from Parts" when they are rebuilding a previously built, certificated and deregistered airplane? The DAR I happen to speak to said "It's already been built, certificated and destroyed. An airplane only can be built once. You have a wrecked airplane that needs a dataplate." and that was the end of his response. I thought that's the reason I would select "built from parts" and make a new airplane from parts. My question to him was about assistance in making sure what I was doing, would qualify for the 51% rule. I have a Kitfox 2 with minimal damage, but I've got a list of modifications. I've already stripped all the fabric and straightened the bent tubes but wanted to get a DAR onboard before I invested too much time or money. If anyone has experience or success with this or knows who I could talk to for good incite, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm itching to get this project underway and would love to revive this bird. Thanks, Craig

Hi All,

Getting ready to replace the windshield and doors - and trying to decide between Lexan vs Acrylic/Plexiglass.

I've been reading through the archives here and at TeamKit - and there are good arguments for both.

Seems like most posts have been on use of Lexan, but a few mention Lexan's sensitivity to gas, UV, and crazing around bends and so strongly recommend acrylic.

The price here is almost the same 4'x8'x1/16th" sheet of Lexan ~$62 and $75 for Plexi - so pretty much a wash there.

Downsides on acrylic I've read are propensity to crack when drilled or bent, easier to scratch but much easier to buff.

The plane sits outside with a cover.

So any suggestions? Which way should I go? Do I heat at the forward spar bend?

Cheers,

Owen

Hello,

Just installed a new shiny and beautifully crafted NR Propeller on a Kitfox 4-1200 powered by a Rotax 912 UL. It replaced a 72” 3 blade tapered Warp Drive. There has always been even with the WDP a bit of vibration on full idle especially at short final with the engine completely unloaded and the “wind milling” Propeller apparently driving (leading?) the engine. Now this has been drastically aggravated with the 2 blade NR.

Is anybody out there experiencing the same thing or a similar issue at final approach at full idle? The vibrations seem to increase proportionally with airspeed at full idle rpm. No issues once you add a little power and load up the prop and engine.

A nice article in June Kitplanes on Kitfoxes. Kind of backs up my opinion on the classic M1, M2, and M3's. If you can find one for sale. John McBean said the model 1's and 2's in flyable condition are bringing 20K when you find one for sale. According to the article, one better have the money in his pocket when he goes to see it, if he turns around, it won't be there when the turns back around. Very few are parting with them unless its for financial reasons.

Could some of them be eliminated?

Sorry if it's a dumb question but I have never heard the reasons for having the wood stringers.

If i were to guess I'd say these might be reasons:

1. Improve the aerodynamics of the fuselage

2. Possibly structurally reinforce some tubes against buckling.

3. Add some internal volume if a control line or something needs to be run outside the frame.

4. Keep fabric from flapping too much.

5.
Ok. Redoing all the fuel lines, vent lines, filters.

The prev owner was running fram G2 clear plastic filters on the run from the wing tank to the header tank. At first look I liked that idea to keep an eye on any junk and keep the rest of the system downline clear.

But at second thought I wondered if I were to get a big enough slug of water in the wing tanks, would that possibly quickly clog up those filters and cause a problem? If so wouldn't it be better to let any water go into the header and sit in the bottom? (where there is a large area for water collection below the pickup line)

Is there a general consensus on using filters in the line between the wing and header tank?

Question 2: is a gascolator required? I would like to bypass it and use clear filters instead. It just seems redundant since the header tank drain point is the low point in the system, and I'll have filters in other locations. I aslo do not like the drain point in the engine compartment. I've had em seep in other planes and never liked the idea of fuel dripping that near the muffler!

Reducing noise from Kitfox operations in-general. The three main sources seem to be (in order of significance) exhaust thermal expansion, propeller wash around the slipstream of the cowling, and intake air. Taming Noise is a concern to prevent ordinances from being created to prevent flight operations. While flight with reduced cabin noise contributes to hearing protection and creature comfort. 60dB disturbs sleep.

What are pilot & A&P experiences, and what ideas/suggestions can be provided?

Hi guys, well I'm about to leave Gulf Shores Al. in a few days, but a guy who is on the Team Kitfox Site got me a ride In a Kitfox 4. Dave (from Pennsecola) has a Kitfox 4 XL with a 503. I'm really impressed on how well that plane performed. Course being at sea level and temps around 55 didn't hurt, but still and all, that plane performed real well. We flew for at least 1 1/2 hrs. and crossed some bays that were way to wide to glide across. My ears were listening to every little noise that engine was making, but it just purred like a kitten. Indicated speeds ran from about 95 at full throttle straight and level and clear down to about 25 indicated full throttle, full flaps stall.. Power off, no flaps stall was about 45. Don't know how accurate the ASI was, but the power off stall speed was about what I would expect it to read. If I can figure how to crop down some video, I'll probably put a vid or 2 up on u tube eventually. Dave had a go pro camera in the plane and we put my mini memory stick in it so I got some nice videos. Flew out of Ferguson Airport ( home of wrong brothers aviation) Any way, I had a fun day. Jim Chuk
