There's a possibility, if the needle clip is INSIDE the plastic cup, that the end of the needle will fully come out of the needle jet and catch on the side. Make sure the needle clip is BETWEEN the plastic cup and slide.

Other than that, dirt, or cable problem.

    Let us know.

Thanks Randy for the heads-up on your EA81. I'm not familiar with the STRATUS config, but man do I want to suck up any details on ANY Subaru powered AVID. I'm running the EA81 with the NSI reduction system. Friend of mine built it and has flown it all over the southeastern US. I've got an Ellison EFS-2 throttle body on it and have been trying to get either a rebuild kit or info as to where I may send it for a rebuild. Ellison seems to have gone the way of the DODO bird. I to am running a WARP three blade with 19 1/2 degrees of pitch in it - engine turns 5000 rpm on take-off. I've done some taxi test since purchase but need to tweek a few things before going for the glory. Just received a new battery (located in the tail end for weight and balance), some fluids, lubricants, filter, aviation hydraulic fluid (no right brake), and am awaiting the FAA to send me an application to re-register this baby (GRRR..). Engine runs fine, but feel like I need to replace the diaphram in the EFS-2 throttle body (got some time on it).
Thanks loads guy for getting back to me, got to run right now but will sure check out any pics of your machine and will get back with you to swap some data. Be well man and 'keep one foot on the ground'. Jim

I plan on taking of from slowdotna at first light (around 9:30 or 10) so I should be at the lodge 11:30 or 12 depending on the winds. Since I am not on floats this winter I wont be doing my straight shot across the inlet to the Su at 50' so flight time will be a bit longer to cross the forelands at 5,000 then run up the coast. I will be monitoring 122.7 till I get up around the Su then I will switch to 122.9

Everyone else has work issues so it looks like I will be making the run solo. Shoot me a PM with your phone number (my other phone is sleeping with the fishes so I dont have your number anymore ) and I will give you a shout when I am ready to take off.

I have just found an instructor who is willing to teach in his Kitfox 4 not far from me, $95 per hour I may just keep mine taildragger and learn in his plane instead of switching my plane back and forth, hopefully it doesn't take me long to learn. About what type of hour range would I be looking at to switch from trike to taildragger?

    Leni,

I glued my landshorter VG's on at the 10% chord also. Let me know what you find the difference is if you try them at some other locations.

I think the biggest difference on my plane was on the horiz stab, much better response at slow speed and better sensitivity on the flaperons.

    Leni,

It looks like we just might luck out and have a decent weather window. Is Bob or anyone else from down you way planning to come? What time are you shooting for to be at the lodge on Friday?

Hey, it would be awsome to get a whole bunch more of the group up here some day!

Ouch, man I feel for you. I have some trouble with my back and when it goes out it can really put me on the floor. Fortunately I still have more time with it "in" than "out" so have not considered surgery to be a good option.

The MK 4 has the nosegear reciever behind the firewall; it is about a 1.5" receiver tube that is a few inches back of the firewall and somewhat angled, with bracing forward to the firewall and back to the front seat truss. I bought my Avid MK 4 as a tricycle and flew it that way for about 1/2 a year before converting it to a tail dragger. It is easier to land as a tricycle so I figured I would learn how to fly it that way first. I already had my tail dragger endorsment but had not flown a TD for over a year so I took a few hours of dual in a Citabria before I jumped into my newly converted Avid as a TD. Since I was already comfortable with how it flew, it made learning to fly it as a TD pretty easy; basically I took it to the airport about 11:00 PM (plenty of light at that time in AK in the summer) and did my first takoffs and landings on the grass strip. After a getting a few under your belt you will feel comfortable with it as a TD.

    Hi Jim,

You might try Mykal Templeman, the owner of Stratus; he doesn't use the throttle body set up on his motors but he used to work at NSI before he bought Stratus. He may know where to find parts. His number is 541-754-4114.

    Hi Jim, welcome aboard.

I am running an EA81 on my new Avid+; I don't have a whole lot of hours on it yet but so far I really like it. My setup is a Stratus motor and redrive with RAM dual ignition distributor, mini alternator and serpentine belt for alternator and water pump, dual nose radators, I built the exhaust and used a FMP "Supertrap" type muffler; also using a 72" three blade warp drive prop. There are some pictures of mine in the Avid plus area of this forum.

What setup do you have on yours? Give us an idea what you mean by getting it back in the air?

    BANDIT and other fellow sojourners,
I'm lookig high and low for any info on a rebuild kit (or rebuild strategy) for the EFS-2 throttle body on my Subaru powered EA81 (NSI) MKIV Heavy Hauler. Any info or leads would be appreciated. EFS is now defunct, my throttle body works fine but has some time on it. Would like to just get a rebuild kit (have certified A&P/A&I support). Any vendors or people of knowledge, I would like to hear from you. Thanks to all - Jim

I like the looks of the StolSpeed VG's. I have the ones from Landshorter.com and they look exactly like the ones you linked on ebay. While I did notice a pretty good difference with them on at the the "recommended" 10% of mean cord, I read quite a bit on some testing on super cubs and the greatest benefit was around 2.5%-3%. I glued mine on right out of the box because the wanker said that "extensive" testing had shown that to be the best location. Well from now on I am doing my own tests when the weather warms up, I just hate to ruin the paint on the wing to get these damn things off. Hmm, they are made out of lexan, I wonder if dumping a little gas on them will take them off like it ruins the windshields I guess that would be well worth a try!

    Vortex Generators
Surprised to find very little info here with a search for Vortex Generators. So here's a couple links and info....

    Take a look at eBay.....

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Vortex-Generators-Experimental-Aircraft-Ultralight-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2eb1d90ce5QQitemZ200552287461QQptZMotorsQ5fAviationQ5fPartsQ5fGear

Cheapest I've found, and actually may be one of the best designs. I have a set, and will be ordering another for the elevator and rudder.

    Home page for the VG's....

Another excellent page for VG's and INFO!!....

Well those seem like a couple of tiny little details that you should have worked out by tomorrow, if you push it hard you can be here by Saturday

Cmon up, we will be ready to show you around this lil neck of the woods! I was kinda surprised today, no wind and I was able to land on hard pack and have it shut down and back taxing on the ski strip in under 200'. All it takes is time in the bird and making every single landing you make a short field one.

I'd be there except my planes not done,my business is slow and my tail wheel expertise has yet to be established. One or two more lessons and I'll be getting close to my tail wheel endorsement. As far as mountain flying goes well Ive yet to master a 4000 ft paved strip but someday I,ll be visiting you Alaska boys. When I do I,ll be there with bells on. If I remember correctly the mark 4 had the gear out in front of the firewall, where an A model is about 3 inches back from the firewall, I don't think it would work but thank you, I don't really want the plane as a trike but trying to figure my options, Blew out every disc in my back and living on tight income right now but if someone has measurements it is an option I might try. LSA legal aircraft are tough to find around h ere and the only one I could get to was a 2 and a half hour drive and it was an ercoupe. Getting my Avid modified and ready to cover I don't know if it would work to fly it as a trike and then switch to a taildragger configuration to get the endorsement but until the lawyers all get things together I don't have the money to go faster on it. At least I earned the sport pilot certificate.

I would call Steve at Airscrew performance. He has sold a boat load of 583's for ultralights and should be able to provide you with the correct jetting.

OK guys, getting calls from the lodge, right now I know that Randy and I are committed to the trip (weather permitting) do we have any other takers? I need to get them something in the next day or two so Dan can ride out and get more supplies to make sure we have a great time up there. I was told that they got 20" of snow up there this weekend but it warmed up a little bit. Forecast is for it to cool off starting tomorrow so we should have some good snow for playing!
