    Willis,
I added a few comments on the cowling, but placed it above the conversation. Might be some helpful info for you.

So I did understand you correctly. No doubt it works but I'm pretty sure that Finnish CAA wouldn't accept that kind of system.
I think they (CAA) requires a level or amount indication of each gasoline tank!

    Thanks anyhow.

I just have to indicate in the gauge how much gaz I add in each tank

ex : If I've got 15 l in the Left wing and 12 in the right wing

I add 24 in each wing so I will have to indicate 39 in the left and 36 in the other one

I use this on my avid and there is no problem

    Hello Michel,

I didn't quite get it. Do I understand this correctly if I say that you are suggesting of counting fuel consumption thus getting fuel level in tanks by calculating how much is used in certain time?
If so, I think this wouldn't work in real life where you don't necessarily start every time with full tanks!

I propably missed something in here.

If I decide to go with the sight gauge option, how to connect a line to the gasoline tank made of fiberglass?

    Avid Floats for sale
My father built an Avid Flyer several years ago and ordered a set of floats with the kit. He finished the airplane but never put it on the floats. He recently asked me to sell them for him. (He can no longer fly and no longer has the airplane). They are fiberglas floats, with steel pipe spreader bars and struts, presumably for an Avid Flyer. They still have the foam packing attached and have been stored inside. I haven't found any of these for sale so I'm not sure of the value. I'm hoping someone in this forum can advise me of a fair value, or if interested let me know. The floats are in Homer, Alaska.

    Hi

    sorry for my bad english

    you'll have to get a FF-1 or FF-3 from MGL (http://www.stratomaster.eu/desktopdefault.aspx?panelid=69&tabindex=0&tabid=0#FF-1)

2 Fuel Flow Sender (one for each wing) http://www.stratomaster.eu/lignes/mgl/pdf/en/ffdoc.pdf

and 2 'andair check valves" from spruce

That's exactly how it has been originally done in my plane. The problem is that fiberglass has become wery dirty & dark and is quite impossible to see fuel level through it. I also thought whether sanding do the trick but I don't know if the surface turns in to be "scratched" (and make the wall of tank thinner)!

Finnish CAA has quite strict about this. Anybody installed sight gauge to fiberglass inboard edge of the wing?

Also if I have understood correctly some Piper Cubs etc. have used mechanical fuel gauge (Spruce id 05-16700) but I have no idea if they have had a tank made of metal (aluminum etc.).
I wonder if sealing of the thing can be done properly with fiberglass wall...

Hey Joey, Im getting ready for my DAR inspection and marking the fuel level is one of my last things on my list,do you have to mark both flying attitude and on the ground attitude?Do you mark it in gallons or fuel level such as 1/4, 1/2 etc. Thanks Randy

I have the fabric cut off the inboard edge of my wing so I can see the fuel level right in the fiberglass tanks. I calibrated it using a gallon milk jug. I jacked up the tail to what I thought was real close to level flight and marked a line for each gallon. Sometimes you have to shake it a little bit to see the level but it's a nice piece of mind to be able to see the actual level in the tank.

    A Moment of Silence
I would like to ask all of the members of this forum to take a moment and think about our young men and women serving in the military and thank them for doing a great job so we can enjoy this forum and our airplanes. This week the war hit our community hard. Emilio Campo Jr. was killed Monday with four other soldiers by a rocket attack in Iraq. It was a shock and a great loss for our town. In the same breath it makes you feel proud as you are entering Madelia and see all of the trees, street signs and light poles tied with yellow ribbons, and the whole length of mainstreet flying the American flag. It is a reminder that we will never forget the ones who gave all, so we can enjoy our freedom. Please go to mankatofreepress.com and pay tribute to Jr. and his fallen Comrades.

    Fuel gauge
    Hello guys,

What kind of solutions you've got for fuel metering in your Avids?

Here in Finland it is required to have fuel indication of both (wing) tanks if they have a separate feed...

I have a Avid Flyer with tanks made from fiberglas (one in each wing root).

I tought first to add a sight gauge but how to build tank fitting (and be sure that it won't leak ).

From Spruce I found something called fuel flow elbow and a rubber fitting for it (so that having a hole and that rubber fitting placed in it
and that fuel flow elbow to it?)? I think I'm missing something here... Sounds a little err... not too secure...

    Any help much appreciated,

    Regards,
    Keijo

Willis- sorry, nothing here either as I haven't got around to it yet. One note though, if you are going to 'sleeve' it, I think you might need a larger i.d. (see post #18 in this thread). Wicks was the only source for the larger i.d. tubing back then, ACS did not have it.

    Willis,
I haven't cut the final holes through the fabric or belly pan yet. Just open it up enough to allow the ends with the clamp through so you can do the install & if needed you can open it up a bit more with a razor blade. You want it to be a pretty tight fit, so you keep out as much exhaust as possible, but not so tight that the cords might be chafed. Also try to figure out a way to seal the opening with some kind of flexible material after the install is done to keep the hole sealed as good as you can. Randy uses some kind of material that looks like that stuff people use on the back of their trucks to keep rocks from hitting their trailer, the hairy looking stuff, it seems to work pretty good. If anyone has a successful way of sealing the bungie cut-out I'd sure be interested in hearing about it. I was thinking about just using some soft rubber to cover the front side of the bungie that would be fastened to the aluminum belly-pan. Maybe glue in something behind the gear to seal the back side. I hope my thoughts help.

I did have a issue with the nylon hose clamps I tried. After a few hours they seemed to loosen up, which caused the fuel line to work lose. Replaced those with the stainless steel clamps. I started to get a small leak with these to, so I turned the clamp a bit and tightened them more. As of last week no leaking. I'll try to check it this weekend.

Thanks for checking Jack,Unfortunately I live in a small town,I checked around with no luck,I'll phone aircraft spruce and see if they handle it.On a side note ,would you happen to have a picture of your bungee cord set up. I'm wondering if the previous owner allowed enough room for all the bungee wraps needed to pass threw the fabric but I don't want to widen the hole if it's not needed.

    Thanks again for any help

    Willis,
I checked my scrap bin and couldn't find any tubing. It seems like I got mine from a local metal fabrication shop when I had the work done. Don't forget the small tube on the inside of the column. I had both done at the same time to ensure they were both lengthened the same amount.

Hi guys ,would any of you's have a extra 3 1/2" length of the 1.375 x.049 tube for adding on to my control column, seem to have that too short thing happening here too. I didn't have a caliper for measuring but I imagine it would be the same diameter as eveyone else .It came out of a heavy hauler C model. If someone has a piece they want to get rid of ,I would be happy to pay for it plus the shipping and handling.

    Thanks Willis

I am sorry to here about the truck, I would be just about ready to give up if mine went too. I had another visit with the surgeon and he reduced my lifting capacity to just 5 pounds, with no sitting standing or walking for more than 5 minutes at a time, and I am getting desperate to get back in the air, it got so bad I went down to the local airport hoping to grab some airtime with another pilot, I was even willing to split fuel, perfectweather and not a plane in 12 hours. I Know this is off topic but hopefully things start getting better for you and just to make it totally clear I don't want anything from anyone if I can't get it on my own.

Well at this point I may have a local guy make me a one-off mount, something I've tried to avoid because it means I have to go buy an engine. The one I'm most likely to copy is used in the Aerotrek. Their 912 install is very compact and clean looking, and keeps the radiators and oil cooler under cowl. I called Bob Rollison about purchasing a cowl almost two years ago and he refused to sell even one bolt to a non-owner. Told him I'd sign whatever liability release his corporate attorneys provided but he just did the big FU flip-off. Man, this "potential liability" shit is taken to such an extreme by some people, I doubt anyone could pry an engine mount or other FWF parts from his cold, dead hands.
