Thanks Larry. That's what I'll do then. I didn't really want to miss the grand entrance my first time flying in.

For a 912, you will have $5-8k into a full overhaul. The TBO for the new motors is 2000 hours. I know of 912 motors north of 3000 hours and still running fine without ever having the reciprocating assembly worked on.

Bandit could speak further, but the 2-strokes can be overhauled for less than $1k with a crank, I think. TBO is 300 hours.

Paul - For the last three years I've been flying into the ultralight field with my plane and parking there. I won't be doing that this year. I will do the "Ripon" arrival and show a "UL" sign to get parked down on the farm.

The ultralight strip is no longer safe, in my opinion, for a higher energy plane like mine. The trees on the north end are too tall and you must make a blind right turn (really bad in a Kitfox) into the field. The south end isn't much better.

I just flew off the remaining couple of test hours on my Model III today. I'm planning to be up on Monday morning early if the weather cooperates. I'm also camping across from the UL area as well.

For those who park by the UL area, do you land at the UL strip, or follow the regular Ripon arrival?

Just got to ask: How much is an overhaul with replaced crank?
What about a 912 - How often and how much?
Yes, Mike's plane(?) trike, was the Arctic Sparrow.

    Thanks Randy,
I believe that the Dodge Colt starter, or some other was listed in one of my alternative engines books.
Yes, it turns opposite, thats why it is behind flywheel, and it is supposed to be lighter than mine.
Dont know if mine is going to clear cowling, so looking for ways to change it.

    Ed,

I will try to find some numbers on mine but it extends behind the ring gear and over the top of the motor so it will be turning the oposite direction. It has the solonoid built on it so no need to add an additional solonoid.; just wire it to the ignition switch. You can see it under the upper radiator hose in the picture.

I'll be there in my usual camping place, same as last year, Mark. The camper will come over on Saturday also through the following Sunday.

I'm planning on flying my Kitfox over too, most likely parking in the UL area. High on the list to be at the "Flapperon Society" convention on Thursday at the Seaplane Base.

Sounds like glassing would be good protection from the elements. However, the weak point would still be just forward of the glassing. Believe you could do better by either the metal, and epoxy the edges, or extend the glassing up the rib for about 8 inches from tip of hanger.

Anybody going to Airventure this year? My wife and I will go out Saturday and stay until the next Sunday. We will be camping on the private land across from the Ultralight runway. The flaperon party is at the seaplane base, Thrusday at 12 o'clock.

At 300hrs I had LEAF overhaul it. Of course they replaced the crank, pistons, rings, bearing ect. 600hrs I sent it to the Ultralight Place in Il. and Jim Leon did the work. He did not replace the crank so I have 600hrs on this crank. They did replace the pistons rings, bearings ect. He did have to bore the sleeves. I did have him go through the carbs and the gear reduction unit also. I may have been a little cautious with my engine, but I think it has paid off in the long run, because I have had no trouble with it. Years ago I sent my carbs to Mike to have him convert them to the manual mixture control. I think it was the Artic Sparrow Mixture control system. That sure has been a great modification. Not sure if anybody does this any more. Joey I did not get your e-mail.

    SUBY STARTER S
wHAT KIND of starters are you using on the EA81? How is it wired?
I have the original geared Soob starter on mine extending forward from the ring gear - mine has the bendix solinoid on it.
QUESTION: with this setup, do I still need a starter relay/solinoid, or just the original wired to the ignition switch?

When I talked to Bud Gish, he said that he flew the trikes with Mike and did the maintenance on them ( Bud and Lance did most of the maintenance). They routinely ran the 582's to 2000 hrs with nothing more than a plug change and a leak test on the engine and seals when the leak test dictated it. Of course, they used the inflight mixture control so it was always a good burn with no carbon build up.

I knew Mike too - He sure didnt baby his rotax - set some altitude records before he was killed in a crash.
Of course he had an excellent maintence shop at Birchwood.

Bandit, Congrats on the 900 hours! What work have you done to your 503 in that time? I have heard that Mike Jacober flew them for 2000 hours, so I'm thinking the 503 might be the recoed setter when it comes to TBO in 2 strokes.

    PTI and CERTIFIED FINISHES
Been reading in Spruce - PTI say their Polyurethane has no isocyanates in it - However, I'll bet their catalyst does!
Wonder if their water-based is 4 coats like Stewarts, or only one coat?
Any chemically-minded want to dive into this ad?
Certified makes Randolph, which is now owned by Stits, but Certified is about $10 a gallon cheaper - just not many colors.
    Don't think Certified makes water-based.

I agree with that - However dont think tube will slip much without tire slippage, but guess it can happen - thats why the FAA tells us to paint a stripe on the wheel and tire to indicate slippage before the tube gets cut.

Thanks for the reply Ed, I have already wiped them down with the red scotchbrite pads about 1" wide. My Hysol is new just got it from Kitfox. So it sounds like I will probably be good to just wipe them down with alcohol and acetone. If anyone else thinks otherwise please let me know why and what else I should do.
